lol i seem to see it the exact opposite to u asa...
the G4 desktops are dam nice machines. the only problem is that they're WAY overpriced. imacs on the other hand look exceptionally dodgy and are not upgradeable much at all. and eMac? dont get me started.....
but i do reckon apple make dam good laptops. so much so that if i wanted a laptop, a mac would be a serious consideration. G4 Titanium Powerbook... mmmmm.... *drools*

A Mac is like Win 3.11, there's crap all for it that's crashes that os, let alone a Mac!!!. At least make some buggy proggys that screw up your mac and use faulty hardware :D

She must be a crap DJ if she doesnt know to go out and buy a decent sound card and speakers.. cos there is plenty of good ones out there... even if she just goes for the top of the line creative...
both Mac's and PC's use PCI and AGP slots, so when you get somebody saying that their Mac has better graphics, you know it's a load of s#it cause a PC can run the same graphics card,
BTW, I did a presentation at UNI on which is better, the PC or Mac, and scored pretty nicely, I had real strong points, and a comment on my marking sheet said that I had done a lot of research cause at the end ppl ask you questions etc. , oh, the PC was about 6 times better when looking at performance and price.

I would love use/own a mac.. not with mac os though, I nearly scored a mac with a 60mhz ppc cpu for $20.. It would of been great, mod the timing crystal, add a cheap pc hsf and tada! superMac! .... I could do with another terminal too :(
oh yeah... those new macs look cool, would work ok as a day2day workstation

Some of the Linus distributions have been ported to run on mac hardware, so people aren't limited to running MacOs anymore.
And that marketing campaign is really bad, I had nothing against Macs(didn't see any thing particularly good about either) but those ads are bad enough to make me advise people against them on principle...

It is not targeted at stupid people, it is a reinforcement campaign. Most people here will find the ads obserd, but then we aren't the target. It's aim is to reinforce the simplicity of a mac, for those that are already considering them.

From a newsletter that i'm subscribed to:
* WINDOWS "SWITCHERS" WERE SOLICITED, PAID
It turns out that Apple's latest ad campaign, in which former Windows users explain why they moved to the Mac, is less than honest. Contrary to comments made by CEO Steve Jobs last week, Apple solicited the ex-Windows users featured in the ads--the users didn't approach the company first. Furthermore, the participants were paid to be in the ads and will receive royalties each time their ad airs. I don't think any of this would be noteworthy if Jobs hadn't implied that the users approached Apple instead of the other way around.
Grrr!!

hmmmmm......
couple of quotes from there site: (top ten reason for switching to a mac :p )
"it doesn't crash"
errrrrrr yes it f+cking does.... i work on mac's at my college for design the new mac OS and mac OS 9 also g4 and imac's... they DO CRASH ALOT!
"they are beatiful"
this is dumb because A: it's personal pref - i and many other happen to think the new (and old) imac looks like a baby toy of some sort...i don't mind the g4 powermac+studio disply setup but in saying that most people compare this to the ugly standard packaged beige box they see at harvey norman or something... they of course don't compare to say a top of the line coolermaster and flat panel of some sort so of of course the mac will win in most peoples eyes....
the mac's use pc133 sdram.... wtf? i dont understand this.....
you cannot customize them.... or build one yourself......
and perhaps the biggest reason why most people will not move to the mac >>>> the are way, way too overpriced
(( just check out what you can buy and build for the same amount it will cost you to get a dual 1g G4 with 21" studio display :p ))

Horses for courses guys. Of course PCs are better value for money, but there's a few things that Macs excel at. I operate a broadcast video editing suite based on an older Mac and it's the most stable computer I've ever had. Only a couple of crashes in 3.5 years - none of my PCs can even come close to that.
Mac 9600/300, Targa2000RTX, Audiomedia sound card, 10 fast SCSI disks hanging off the back, a couple of 21" Mitzis and a Wacom up front, running Avid Xpress software - love it!
It helps that it's a clean machine - no modem, no games, no knowledge of the outside world at all. For video, sound mixing and graphic design, Macs generally still rule.
(No flames please)
not quite cause Mac's use PCI and AGP cards, and they are baiscally using hardware which works for PC's and most of the time is made for PC's, so I can't see them being better because they use the same hardware???

Well done on bumping the worlds oldest topic.....
anyway back on subject.... the latest ads
http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
I find it quite funny that in the 'out of the box' one they complain that the windows PC needs to download some drivers etc.... I setup my girlfriends new mac mini last week and when I eventually managed to get it to connect to the internet I ran the inbuilt software update.... and proceeded to download the 6~700Mb's of updates required to bring the mac up to speed....
apart from that its not to bad, fast enough fro most stuff except games.

The updates are updates though, you can get them if you want and you do not need them, they work fine out of the box.
Newer Intel units only need 200mb or less of updates.
LOL, I've got nothing against Macs (ok, the price for performance, but that's it) just looking through their list:
1. It just works.... so does a PC. I spend hardly any time troubleshooting anything that wasn't my fault (eg, overclocking related, which reminds me... Macs don't overclock).
4. 114,000 viruses. Personally, haven't had a virus in years that wasn't caught on arrival by Norton. Common sense helps.
The rest is largely covered by stuff that is free for PC... so what if you have to download it.
What’s an Intel chip doing inside a Mac? A lot more than it ever did inside a PC.
It's more like the Intel chip has set OSX free.

The viruses point is the only one that annoys me. I wish they'd just grow some balls and say "I'm a WINDOWS PC".
Cos there sure as hell aren't 1000's of virii out there trying to bust down my BSD or Linux boxes...
...but the point IS valid for Windows PC's. Users shouldn't ideally have to be running anti-virus software at all - that's their point. The only virii out there should theoretically be either 0-days (which you can't do anything about), or defended against by security updates (which should be available ASAP, not 'on the next patch Tuesday').

Argh, looked at my previous post in this thread and felt like stabbing my eyes out. That's what four years does I guess...
In hindsight, losing the entire forum data the previous two upgrades really was a good thing!
But to get back on topic, things sure have changed since this thread, and pretty much all for the better. OSX wasn't even available back then, or had just come out and was horribly slow. And you have to admit, the new imac is ergonomic genuis.

I have to use Macs from time to time and they are nothing special. I don't have anything against them, but I really hate Mac fanboys. They always go on about how it will never crash etc, yet it always seems to and they just shrug it off.
But all the "Macs run on better hardware" crap has come back to bite them in the arse :D Ohhhh thankyou Apple for switching to Intel. Now it seems they have to resort to stupid adds that don't actually state any realistic facts.

I wouldn't say Mac's are ****e at all, as stated before, they are the preferred platform in some industries because they do certain task very well (in other words... better than a Windows based PC)
Comparing Macs to the x86 PC platform is a lot like comparing Intel to AMD, ATi to nVidia... each is unique in its own way, and do some things better than the other... essentially it's all up to user preferrence. You will obviously go with the product you like and are most comfortable with.

I setup a Mac the other night for a friend, hooked into the wireless network no problems when I eventually found the key, was a bit surprised to be hit by the amount of updates that suddenly popped up.
But my goodness they are a clean environment to work in, a little too clean for my liking.
I think of it this way, I personally can do more on my PC than I could ever do on a Mac, but tbis is because I know what they hell im doing, I can go download whatever software I need and use the knowledge I have as a base to learn how to use the software.
For a Noob, I can see how the Mac is attractive in its simplicity, you can do some pretty cool stuff straight away with very little skill.

Agreed, and once I learned to whore the OS you are like a speed demon on crack when its multitasking time.
Programs are the main issue, there are good ones, but finding them is like stabbing in the dark while running in a forward motion, everynow and again you find something but mostly useless.
With the increase in popularity etc, the apps should in theory improve etc. And the default bundle with 10.4 and iLife is just amazing VS XP.
