Well, it was about time I posted this up. KJ will edit this post later anyways to tell the people dates and stuff.

Let's see. Well for a start we are now running the tournaments slightly differently. KJ and I will compile a list of games that work 100% fine on Windows XP only [since the majority people use Windows XP], these will be our tournament games. Right, so then we get about 20 tournaments or so lined up. Are we going to use them all? What ... are you nuts? Well, what we do is, we pick a random number, and as the tournaments are numbered, we pick 2-3 random numbers and those will be our tournaments! Of course, the tournaments will be known before you join.

Anyways, ... well I'm lazy and I'll post the list of games up later on today ... in the after noon.

Oh and I will finish this post when I have some sleep.

[KJedits...]
L3#12 will be kicking off Fridary afternoon on this February the 14th. There's going to be a big Worms tournament to banana -spam your way to fame, and once again I'll be tagging along my X-Box to take some of you down in Halo! You can register for the event, and check venue information etc on L3.net.nz (http://www.l3.net.nz/).

Dates: Friday February 14th - Sunday February 16th
Times: ?TBA(probably 6pm Friday)? - 5pm Sunday
Venue: C-LAN (http://www.c-lan.net.nz/)
Charge: $20
X-LAN: $20
( city: chch, duh :p )

We're expecting around 60 people, and you can expect to see us hosting plenty of BF1942, NFS6: HP2 and UT2k3 (with the new maps) action.

It also looks like [OCNZ].Weasal. may be showing of some modding styles live at the LAN - so if you're itching to rip a new blowhole in your case, it may pay to cruise down and have a look ;).

See you there!

XP only.....
what about we 2k users?
and on that note, who knows how to get 2k compatability mode running in sp3?

What he means by that is non-DOS games, because games like Netmaze don't work in 2k/XP :(.

Oh, and that's how the tournaments are happening for #13, #12 is just going to have 3 different games that I've chosen.....

BWAHAHAAA.... ph33r m3....
( or not  )

ATM the venue is still to be confirmed - I think new owners are are moving into C-LAN, so C-LAN will probably be re-negotiating a few things.... ;)

Guess I didn't explain that one to well now did I. Tournament games can't include things like Doom 1 for example, since they won't run properly in Windows XP.

I did originally have Simcity 2000 NT edition as a tournament but last night testing shows that it won't work in Windows XP. Damn.

Probably when everyone comes back from sleeping/showering/eating/whatever at home on the Saturday. Which, IIRC - normally happens before the pizza run.

So if I get pizza @ 8pm ( order it around 6:30 ), then we could start the tourney around 6-7pm, and have it finishing as food turns up :D.

Yes, yes - that will work nicely....

Haha - pick the Internet Explorer user :D.

If you were using a browser like Opera or Mozilla ( with tabbed browsing ), you would have just killed the host window of the tabs, opened your browser again, and carried on having lost only a couple of seconds.

But don't let me stop you using an unsecure browser full of well-known exploits....

Sorry i missed coming back saturday night, after a good night at L3, then working all day, i kinda went to sleep on saturday night.

I think Elle T should start taking valium, although i would have liked to see his attempt of inserting certain computer peripherals (sp?) in places only SSquirel should know about.......

^WTF?
Get off the Crack!

My lan summary:
Alot of gaming & new faces was quite good except certian ppl don't seem to listen unless you repeat yourself 5000 times, which made the Worms Tourney a huge mission to sort.

Played a Heap of Tribes 2, Worms and a few others.
Tended to spent alot of time setting up peoples games & having fun at Crazysurfer's expence.

In all was good lan - big thanx to the KJ.

(Almost) Anything I said in that L3 chat should not be taken seriously. 24hrs+ of no sleep does strange things to me.

The tribes 2 was good (even if NeM owned us all), the worms was good, and for some strange reason I did rather well at the bit of Q3 a few people played.

great lan kj, only two things could have mad it better, but theres not much you can do about it.

1: get more regulars showing up
2: host the lan at a facility that has a microwave or on oven e.g. rolleston...

as for you elle-t, you should know by now that nobody listens to you :P

Regulars, whats wrong with Sern Chosen1 and I. We've only missed 2 L3's total (#1 and 9/10). :P

And don't mention Rolleston again, Sern will start to put rubbish in peoples pcs again from excitement.

Oh and Generals, I beleive I didn't lose a match while I wasn't playing a 2 on 1 game. I totally owned Chosen1, and the game with Chosen and Swifty, when I surrendered I was probably at the top, having a nuke and particle cannon land on your base every few minutes doesn't help :)

For my first L3, I must say I had a memorable time.

Getting pwned by cadmax on SerN's server.. playing CS one-on-ones with mates of mine, and going for a 10pm pizza run with BlueMoose, unl33t, Etherograph and rrp.

I thought the LAN quality was great, with gigs of files being shared constantly and moving round I'd have thought there would be probs with high pings, etc. but I was able to play with <15ms pings on SerN's UT2k3 server.
Maybe I'm just too uninformed to know whether it is expected/normal to have performance like that  , but I thought it was excellent.

All-in-all a great time... will be there again.

Thanx KJ :)

>2: host the lan at a facility that has a microwave or on oven e.g. > rolleston...

Having a microwave at C-LAN isn't such a bad idea ... something we could look at, actually, once we've finished moving everything downstairs.

On that note, though ... if there's anything about the venue that you particularly like or dislike, or ideas that you might have, please feel free to mention it to either Jono (Glippo) or myself. So long as KJ is ok with it, I'll probably knock up a survey form for the next L3 that you guys can fill out, telling us what you like (and don't like) about C-LAN.

Seriously, our aim is to make the place *the* LAN vanue in Chch, but we can only do that with your help. Our contact details are on the C-LAN site (www.c-lan.net.nz) if there's anything you want to share...

How about a 56k connection to the net. That way we could have a server connect and cache the OCNZ forums everynow and then.

Would be quite good, means us OCNZers can read the latest on here and not have to cruise home and use someone elses pc.

Leeching was mass and gaming was sweet. Sweet to talk to you OCNZ guys again, thats what I like about our LANS we are becoming more and more a community us regulars, its sweet :)

Well I think it was a lack of sleep which caused me to put a bag of chips, bottle of coke and paper rubish in Paul Rhee's case, and plactic bags, paper's etc in KJ's case. though Sydog helped me by unlocking Elle T's Enermax server case, from which I placed a nice subway napkin over his drives bays and locked the cover back up ;)

Once again there's a trend where a reasonable group of people decide to stay on and game away through the Sunday. Of note this LAN were BF1942: Road to Rome, C&C: Generals and of course Worms :D.

The Road to Rome maps were an instant hit - and they're in general bigger, meaning a field day for snipers! Some great games were had, with some incredible piloting skills shown by several people.

C&C Generals is looking quite good. Hopefully it'll be a game that'll become a new standard for RTS games. How could a game with and intro like that NOT? :D

Oh, and don't play Tribes2. NeM will pwnz j00
( although it was fun all the same... )

The new move WILL put us in a smaller area - so numbers will probably be restricted to around 70. However, the downstairs room means NO screen glare, NO leaky roof, and less noise from outside annoying us :). And in the winter, it should mean we won't freeze ( it'll just be the summer months that are a problem with heat! ). There's lots happening in the C-LAN venue, so it'll be interesting to see.

And yes, a net connection would be good - it'd be handy to have access to Google etc so that I can more effectively troubleshoot problems people have there!

LOST & FOUND

1x Fan - It's O'Neils. If you want it back soon, email/PM me.
1x Small yellow screw-driver - It's ElleT's, I'll have a look and see if it got mixed into my tools. It's a Straight-head one (not Philips).

BIG UPS!!

To teh [OCNZ]|nferno, who brought an XP2100+ system for us to server games off. It didn't get thrashed a lot - but it was handy having it there for those bigger BF games ;).

[OCNZ]SerN and Warp for bringing switches - the extra ports made balancing the bandwidth easier!

[OCNZ].Weasel. for providing hours of annoying metal-on-metal cutting noise :P. Heh, modding is good....

All you other guys for coming and paying up front - we're now making money, which means soon we'll be able to buy stuff to make the LANs better ( = good ;) ).

ATTENDANCE

A smaller LAN with 51 attendees - but expected given it was Valentine's weekend and all...

TOURNAMENTS

We didn't really get much of the way through the UT2k3 tournament - new maps and patches meant it was a hassle to get everyone playing with the same game - but from the gameplay we did see, it would've been a [Pike] guy...

The Worms tourney got pwnzed by yours truely. With [OCNZ]ElleT, [OCNZ]KingJackal, Warp and someone else ( OMG I suck at this!! ) in the final it was hard going - but I finally took it out. Unfortunately it's a highly debatable result, as early in the deciding round Warp was dropped from the server. He'll no doubt claim that he was about to slaughter me - but it's all lies. I've decided that winning that Worms tourney deserves a prize - so I'm going to let myself into the next LAN free. Hah! Beat that!

MONEY

We made positive again! The domain ( www.l3.net.nz ) has come up for renewal again too - so it looks like I've just found out where that money'll be going ;).

ElleT said:

Hey, don't hold back. :)

Well, I guess there's two ways to look at the move, really. The first is to say "Hey, we're losing space - it sux!". There's no denying it, there will be less space downstairs than there is now. We *are* looking at ways of maximising the space (desks that fold down, couches that become beds, etc), so hopefully it won't be limiting as you think. Yes, numbers will be restricted to around 70 - but having said that, there has not yet been an event at C-LAN (either VM or L3) that has reached 70 people IN TOTAL, never mind concurrently.

The other way of looking at it is to think about the positives for a minute. As KJ mentioned - no screen glare or leaks, reduced noise, and a LOT warmer in winter (as anyone who attended the Neverwinter Nights LAN last year will appreciate!). It does have the potential to get warm in summer - which is why we are having ducted ventilation installed, plus some high velocity fans. And if it's still too hot - we'll deal with it!

In addition, there is going to be a cafe going in at the front of the building - thanks to those who filled out the survey at the weekend, by the way. Good food in the same building is always a winner, IMO.

The most critical thing, as always, is money. The unfortunate reality is that even if the building hadn't been purchased by new owners (meaning we couldn't keep renting the whole place), the costs of renting an entire central city building are very high. There was just no way that we could afford to keep losing the amount of money (we're talking a four-figure loss EACH MONTH) and still provide a LAN venue. So, to be blunt, it was a case of reducing costs, or shutting down completely.

However ... on the upside, the reduction in costs means that we may even start making a very small profit on the place. If so, there's a whole bunch of improvements that we have on our agenda - the place *will* rock, given half a chance.

Put it this way - we are providing C-LAN primarily as a service for the gaming community in Christchurch (there's certainly not enough money in it to justify it as a business venture). We want it to be the ultimate LAN venue in the city. With your support, we just might get there...

Obilix (C-LAN guy)

PS: If anybody has lost a sleeping bag, there was one left behind at the weekend. PM/email me with the details, and we can arrange a time to collect it.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the pretty girl in the building across the road. She was having her hair done with the door open. When 20 odd geeks raced outside to have a perv, I think they got a little worried and closed the door. :D

Personal Highlight was meeting more OCNZer's than in my previous L3's combined. Didn't manage to get a lot of gaming done (too much updates to catch up on). But did enjoy getting owned by everyone in T2. Also enjoyed watching the infamous Worms. Hell I might even give it a go next time.

Damn, it looks like I missed out on heaps of things. Oh well. I hopefully will be making an appearance on the Easter Lan, if it fits my time tables.

Moving to the basement isn't neccessarily a draw back, I mean it ain't that bad. Yes our numbers will have to be restricted at some time to about 70 but its like, with our current space usage, that's pretty good. I myself used up about half a desk most of the times since I liked to have all the servers around me [although with no KVM switch ... it didn't help]. None the less, I reackon the positives outweigh the negatives which are very few.

I believe that was TYRAEL , who deserves respect because that was basically the second time he ever played Worms before.
And he kept up with youz till the end!

Personally, it could have been better for me, due to a number of problems:

- The UT2k3 patch would not install (even after reinstalling UT)
- ~ every 30 seconds I would get down to 2-6 fps in UT, usually while engaged in a combat situation = me being gibbed
This was with ALL back ground apps closed, normal frame rate ~70fps.

Apart from all that, it was pretty good, hope to show my face at the easter one. There was quite a good conversation going on at ~7 AM on Saturday! Also, the case badges are excellent, a lot of people picked theirs up there. Thanks for the event KJ! It would have been better if James was there with the Intranet .. Hope to see you at easter man.

what a lan it was. definatly one to remember....

next time, i'll get more organised with the modding side of things and actually build somthing useful... perhaps even go over some of the principals behind electronics (e.g. proper use of a soldering iron, working out resistance ect...)

There will be no more fake-dremel at l3 for the time being :(. Why ? Its only usefull on thin steel and plastics, but more importantly it will be replaced by its bigger, noisier, and therefore better big brother the Hand-Held Jigsaw ;)

life is gooood.

And next time around i'll get YOU guys more involved as i may know what to do, but you'll learn a lot more from actual hands-on experience...

was it just me, or did everyone think i was electrified ? ( nobody around me for like a 2m radius while i was modding the NIC... and it got worse when i h4xx0r3d the old case i had...) i'll never fully understand why nobody wanted to go near me...

and between now and then ( and polytech work... ) im planning "somthing new" for the lan... keep u posted on that.

see y'all there.

There is a good reason why we ban stereos at lans, because you can never ever please the lanner next or around you. Feel free to bring them but if KJ or I can hear them we will ask you to turn it down or remove them with quite excessive force. [Sorry Choosen_1 for yelling at ya last time]. Also we had a very bad experience at one of the L3's when someone brough a hi-fi system and was doing dolby digital tests all the time [imagine, waaaaaaaaaaa-haaaaaaaaaaaa-riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! at 10 minute intervals]

Like I said, feel free to bring'em when there is a collective amount of people... but be forewarned!

Luckly I was at the back part of C-Lan, but If I went to the middle part of the room a loud droning sound of people's loud case and CPU fans could be heard :(

If everyone runs thier fans at the same speed they run them at home i'm sure it would make a world of difference ;)

Yo hey I was chatting to this cyber cafe guy and he says BF1942 has good network coding, despite our futile attempts at getting it to run really nicely on my own system as a ded server [Athlon XP+2100 512MB DDR 133]... he says that I have no idea what I am talking about. I wasn't too happy, I was pretty sure that BF1942 still suffers from crappy network code. Please advise.

Also to the guys playing C&C Generals at the last lan. What was the nwtwork connection like? Apparently this same guy says that it has bad networking coding, with 8 players having 1000 guys apparently really slows down. Even with 8 players and small amount of guys is slow... please advise on the experience.

I don't know any rts' that runs well with 8000 units in a game. In fact they all run like dogs with that number of units. Or is that 1000 all up? That'd still be a boarder line number with all the older rigs that are enevetably (sp?) in a game.

I agree that LAN's are deffinitly hotter than home hence the need for greater cooling.

when playing generals i found it was better to have small servers running (e.g. max. of 4 players, with a couple of bots throw'n in for good measure...) than larger ones of 8.

oh and SerN, good call :)

Yea me and Sydog both have KX7's, though Sydog was running a Tbred and I was running a Palamino.

My new Tbred is 5C cooler than my palamino and it's running 300Mhz higher too. (both chips running 1.85 too)

My temps are around 40C or so now....

But sorry Sydog, those little blackice extremes are actually very good rad's for their size. ;)

Man, I was referring to the lan before that, when I had a 1700 palo and you had the 1800.

Pleased to see you getting some good temps and overclocks with that Tbred I sold ya :)

I have to say.. i like some background music at a lan.. just gives it a more upbeat atmosphere and makes it more interesting.

In other news.. my silverstorm 3 arrived today.. and subject to money (and silverprop stock levels) I should be getting wet soon :D

I guess background music is all good, but the thing is it annoys people in the end. The rule of thumb for volume is if you can hear it through your earphones then it is too loud.As you can see EQX suffered from the fate that they had to have background music. Fun for those who don't have a computer, those who are spectators for example.

Anyways, the whole background music idea was shut down since we had the crazy nutter upstairs complaining that his 2-year old son couldn't sleep. So we decided to turn it off for future lans, so that he couldn't argue with our rather non-music quiet fan noises which can go through 2 brick walls and is so loud he can't watch the rugby game one with 16 sweaty lads cheering.

It might be different due to the movement to the basement, but KJ will have the final say on the matter though.

personnaly i disagree with the 'loud' background music due to ppls different tastes, perhaps 'quiet' bg music will work?

i thought c&c generals ran ok, cept that some ppl lagged out or something when i was playing?

Any complaints about me bringing the sound system I had for a few of the lans(#7, 8 and 9 I think)...although it was just an extention of the main rig for #7.
I have a couple of ideas about how to improve the sound quality, smallish speakers and a couple of sets so it can be spread around a smaller area(maybe just at the back of the room) without annoying base to intrude on those who like the whir of fans(Binky). :p
I found the bigger speakers(a couple of LANs ago) to be a tad heavy on the base and got annoying after a while because all I could hear was the base.

Yeah something like Antimatters sound he had a few LANs back was sweet I reckon, just some techno running the background in the early hours of the morning is nice.

Yeah.. quiet bg music is all we need.... just something to get away from that constant drone.... and to liven it up a bit.

no no no no
rather than speakers, if everyone wants to listen to the same thing, run a shoutcast server.
That way those who dont like whatever is playing dont have to listen, those playing games can actually hear the game, and those few watching a vid or sleeping can actually do it as well.

With a larger lan, less noise is better, because there are generally 60 voices saying 'aw **** off man, i was behind a ****ing wall!'

Whereas at a smaller lan with 10-20 people, music, beer etc and crap generally go down well, mainly because you dont have lots of noise to beat

Shoutcast servers were introduced ages ago to l3, but they never caught on. Probably due to the lack of information.

When I come back at the end of the year, flyers introducing people to the Intranet and the Shoutcast server will be there. Also misc information will be avaliable such as places for food etc etc.

The Easter one, if I can make it will be the first introduction to those flyiers as such.

I think the whole point of the music is not to be heard when you've got headphones on. Which renders the idea of a shoutcast server as useless.

The music should be for when you're just wandering around looking at rigs and the like. Or watching other people playing games.

but the problem is that with the music that usualy plays, you can still hear it WITH your headphones on...thats hte whole problem..

When I went in on Saturday night even tho it was my first time in the place it didnt really feel totally comfortable... tho it was prob since i didnt really know anyone or it was one guy eyeballing me when we walked around :D But anyway, a low ambient sound running, even if it was at the back of the building would work. I noticed a lot of the gaming seemed to be happening near the front.

When people are setting up their rigs, is there a specific place for people to go? ie Gamers in on bit, leechers at the rear, Drunken hippies in the 2 man mosh pit outside? Or is it a walk in dump ya box and go mad?

Generally all the OCNZ fellas sit up at the front in the first few rows, Random people and some OCNZers in the middle, and Wibber and his mates at the back where its dark lol

Ta Oblix, was gonna have to get Elle T whooping some arse... and no not with a whip like normal.....

Problem with walk ins? Get Booga out front with his "breast screening" googles... may turn people (and yes many lanners) away.

Well my l3 cameo appearance went well, only there for about 1hr, but it was great to meet a few of the OCNZ southern contingent.

managed to watch some ppl play some good unreal2k3 and Ellie T was playng tribes 2. and got in a little leeching, had the laptop on the hub for a bit, said gidday to a few people which was great.

But just like to say thanks guys for the L3 experience.

And I wanted to ask, can I put l3 veteran in my sig now? :D

I have attached a pick of KJ's boomslang/watercooling madness

actually, thats a rather clean shot of kj's little area. its usually encrusted in filth / general lan rubbish.

a keeper nonetheless ;)
