Looking good so far. Certainly not twice as fast as the Radeon 9700pro or anything.

Damn that thing's huge...

Oh well I never used that pci slot anyway.
What intrigues me is his final comments about ATi releasing a souped up version of the 9700 pro when nVidia releases the FX.

All I know is I want them to do it, along with the insueing price war. Then maybe I'll be able to afford to get me a card capable of handling Doom]|[ :D

there are a few rumours flying about that ATI have sedated their 9700 drivers, so they can give their users a little boost once the FX hits the shelves... a la nvidia ;)

But couldn't they capture this market share now by introducing now for all those people saying "I'll wait till Geforce FX as it's so much faster".

If it actually weren't much faster, people would just buy ATI now.

(assuming this is all true)

It wouldn't have the same effect trying to capture it all now. The larger proportion of users still have nvidia cards, and therefore look to upgrade based on the nvidia cycles.

Ati showing their entire hand now wouldn't do much to encourage GForce users to swap over, as they would likely be waiting on the FX. If however, ati wait until the FX arrives, then they would manage to steal some of the thunder.

Market Skimming vs Market Penetration..........<withholds rant>

Yeah exactly. It wouldn't matter how big an improvement they could make now, people would still wait for the GeForce FX to come, hoping it was faster still.

IMHO though, ATi don't have a good enough driver dev group to pull off something like that. Hell, they don't even HAVE linux drivers for me, my Radeon still has bugs setting the GAMMA - there's plenty for them to fix before they start bothering with out-pipping on performance ( unless they WANT to be fast and buggy  )

there win32 are pretty good, I'd say thats wher most of the dev are focusing thier efforts

I'm glad some of you marketing gurus can explain it to me like that.

Interesting what it says about stressing the memory pipeline, though, because I'm sure Nvidia is not stupid and knows ATi "won" the last round not out of technical prowess, but sheer "brute horsepower" because of the 256-bit memory, so why did they choose to go with 128-bit, unless they have some BADASS memory controller designed by Raelian engineers from secret Alien technology?

IMHO, it will perform dissappointingly on last-gen games, but show it's true colors on games that are more GPU-intensive, like- next christmas, so, in essence, a very expensive "future-proofing" card.

Yeah that my thoughts on the matter as well.
