Just wondering.... What advantages and disadvantages are involved in unlocking a Athlon XP?

with it unlocked you can drop the default multiplier to achieve a much higher fsb, and get a decent performance gain from it. the only real disadvantage is you will void the warranty.

unlockig will help you get a higher oc and let you keep your fsb closer to 166 133 or whatever (a fsb where your multies keep your pci bus at 33mhz) therefore allowing a higher overclockk.
And also what thc said.
An d the disadvantage as thc said.

so let me get this straight...
when unlocked I can drop the multiplier setting to lower and increase the fsb for higher Mhz and keeping the PCI at 33Mhz...or increase Multi+FSB = More Mhz and PC at 33Mhz?

either and neither, you either can drop the multi and aise the fsb, this will over clock your pci and agp busses as well, because by default you pc/agp dusses run at 1/4 and 1/2 of the fsb, if you overclock the fsb they go faster as well, if you have a xp333 od a kt333/400 mobo you can set the dividers to 1/5 and 2/5.
what that means is if you set you fsb to 170 and your divider at 1/4, you pci/agp will be 43/86, at which most pci devices wont work, but if you use the 1/5 divider, it is only 34/68, which doesn't overclock the pci/agp busses much, but greatly increases memory bandwidth.
or you can just up the multi and make the cpu go faster.

it should be set to 133mhz FSB so it'll run at 1463mhz, is there a jumper in your mobo that will set it to either 100/133 FSB, if so change it to 133FSB,
What mobo do u have and ill help u look for tht Jumper

its will set you fsb to 133, the default is 100, for durons/ old athlons, you have to set it to 133 for new athlons/xp's

what will happen if you do it with a 900 duron, with a FIC AZ11EA MB? cause i can only boot with as high as 113 ATM. I tryed unlocking the CPU but cant seem to cut the bridges with a craft knife. Ive managed to up volt from 1.64 to 1.92 ( no cutting invovled) Im really fustrated that it wont cut. What sort of presser do you need to cut it. BTW ATM is runs 42 idle and 54 under load.

um you dont need to cut anything, Im pretty sure the boards has dipswitches to change the multi, I'll bring some sh1t to L3 on show you then, you coming on saturday?
Method
30-12-2002, 09:44 PM
i dont think a knife would like cutting thru ceramic either.
What you are trying to do is cut the bridges to change the defult multyi witch can be usefull if your multiplyer is bios ajustable and you have a 100/133 jumper.
But you wound i bet.
So all you have to do is close up all the l1 bridges.
Wibber

exactly, you dont need to cut anything

CommanderK - I had almost the same setup, I closed the L1 bridges (pencil trick! ahoy!) and got my 850 to be happy at 1090 (145x7.5) at whatever the top voltage was (1.85, 1.95??)
On my Iwill XP333 I got 1106 (158x7) with some semi-decent PC2100 stuff...also Wibber, you didnt mention the fact the XP333 has a 1/6 divider also :D Something the VIA boards dont get!
Damn that was a fine little chip...and a good cheap motherboard, in fact they ALL were...hehehe

I really cant find a dip switch with 5 switchs. Ive only found 2 with 4 switchs and also cant find a 100/133 jumper setting. this is one jumper on a 100/133 contacts but it is already on 133. im cutting them because I dont have a switch. Try looking at a AZ11EA M/B pic. Sorry I dont have a pic or acess to ditigal cam.

im pretty damn sure my mate jesus has one, artifice use to own it, he sold it to me and jesus begged it off me..its running a duron 700 @ 1ghz no cutting involved

ok so you found it.:) But I was under the impression that u needed a five switch plug. So how do I use a four switch one i.e. what settings do what, cause got a five switch guide. Thanks.:)

Why didn't you do this in the first place!
We love to help, but it grips my sh*t that someone thinks they can take advantage of other people, get spoon-fed answers from crystal balls, without even bothering to do the simple things first like get off your butt.
I'm usually more reserved than this post, but feel I could say alot more, however I will leave it at this.
