Okeh dokeh

2000+xp Volcano 9
Gigabyte GA7VA
512mb ram (two 256 sticks 1x2100 1x2700(
radeon 9000 PRO
40gb seagate 7200
60gb seagate 7200
Running win98SE

Ok well just as i get my whole computer together i think ah great time to finally overclock something better than my old pos.
The cpu is locked still, so i can only fsb oc.

So the fsb goes up to 136@1.772v(1700mhz) everything seems fine stable as a rock.

Next fsb goes to 139@1.772v(1737mhz, 2100+ speed) boots up fine detects it as a 2100+ get into windows then followed by two blue screens and finally a black one, The system has crashed....

I put the voltage up to 1.8606v (5% higher) and i get into windows with just one blue screen and it doesnt crash yay. but practically all programs are unstable and cause a blue screen.

I dont want to push my voltage another 5% that will take it to 1.9492v and some people told me thats too high, i gotta watch my tempature too.

(when overclocking i took out all my pci cards, adsl and 56k modems)

So my question is, with only a 70mhz overclock my system becomes unusable why is this?

(oh and thanks to the people that helped me with the registry problem i had in the help/troubleshooting section, it was just the hdd :D )
If theres anything else you need to know just post it.

Cos it doesn't like your RAM.

Best thing for overclocking is one stick. Two sticks of the same type are likely to lower your successful overclock a tad. Two sticks that are DIFFERENT are liable to lower it quite a bit.

Umm, that's what I'd say it is anway :P

139mhz is unlikely to stress any PC2100 ram at standard timings. if the ram is preventing the overclock you have some seriously crap stuff there.

i reckon the reason you're getting crap overclocks is cos you have a palomino. the max stock speed for a palomino chip is 1733mhz (2100+ rating). obviously not all palominos can reach this speed, as seems to be the case with yours. looks like you purchased an architecture which is at it's upper limits (but hey, dont feel too bad - i have a palomino XP2100+ :p).

but to see whether it is the ram, take out the PC2100 stick and see if you get any higher. PC2700 is rated at 166mhz.

lol swifty does it even go up 1 mhz :p.

macdaddy, do you know what stepping your cpu has?

and maby try with only your pc2700 ram in there.

i had a look at www.overclockers.com's cpu data base and found that the Average overclocked speed for your cpu is 1886 Mhz.

And possibly crank up your RAM voltage a tad.

no need, hes got pc2700, and his oc is nowhere near its spec, it shouldnt need more voltage, if you do mdont put it up much 1.9 is max id say. i never go further than 1.8 because i have generic ram with no cooling. but now my ram runs on a defult v with some [H]ard ram timings :)

edit, you havnt playd with your ram timings ay? what settings are the on? like for the speeds ect.

Ok, well i tried with just my stick of 2100 and 2700 seperate, just the same as before.
Method - ill get the stepping in a minute.and i havnt messed with the timings for the ram mainly cause i cant find them :D I have this util that i can up the agp, pci, dram voltage and mhz so should i mess around with that?

By the way when i change the fsb in bios the agp and pci mhz go up also.

ram is at 2.5v,272mhz
cpu is at 1.772v, 1700mhz
agp is at 1.5v,64mhz
pci is at 34mhz dunno what v

gonna go check what stepping is :D

Ok well since i cant get my hs&f off my cpu it doesnt look like youll be getting the stepping or batch or whatever. But my volcano 9 is comin soon so its gonna have to come off :D

These are the settings i can change the ram to in bios

DRAM Frequency 133 ddr266,166 ddr333, 266 ddr400 ( dunno about the last one my writings kinda messy when i jot things down =]

AGP voltage +0.3v,+0.6v etc
DIMM voltage +0.3v etc etc
PCI voltage " "

yes it goes up 1mhz cos for some reason my gigabyte board runs it at 134fsb even tho its set to 133 :p

so its unintentionally overlclocked to 1742 mhz :D

i havent tried any real overclocking yet cos my temps are too high at the moment (57 load). hopefully some WC gear should be arriving at my residence soon tho. :)

cool same with me here :0. But il hopefully have a xp1800 tbred rev a  if i can find one that i... or il have to settle with a poopooalomino.

macdaddy, play around with the settings abit, take your ram timings all the way down. thee located in advanced cmos i think (its advanced somthing im sure) just look in the manual or them. its in the same place as your agp stuff.

Its a kt333 board ay?

Na kt400

well theres your problem ;)
na

Check your agp stuff in bios, make sure its on 4X not 8X.

Sorry for being so brief but im sure youl understand what im trying to say :p

Hmm

I am running a Gigabyte KT400 board, with an XP2000+ as well...and some crappy PC2100 ram, and its fully stable at 148 locked.

Its either your video card, or your RAM...I doubt its a limitation on the chip, there pretty much is only one real current stepping anyway.

The PC2700 stuff should work just fine, CAS2 OR CAS2.5, so try resetting BIOS back to defaults, and starting from scratch...run the CPU at 133 (the jumper on the board if there is one) and bump it up to the standard threshold of 145.

If that doesnt work, its BOTH sticks of RAM that eat ass, and I would suggest selling them and getting one single stick also, go for a decent brand like Corsair, Mushkin or if you must, Kingston.

(Trademe tards will buy your RAM for crazy prices ;D)

damn you, you little squirrel you  want a peanut?
So SS, your running at 1812.5mhz?on what cooling and what temps do you get?

Method - It is running at 4x not 8 :)
