View Full Version : Proview PX986 19" Cheap-ass monitor
I sold my old 17" MicroVision monitor to mird-OC yesterday and got a 19" Proview monitor from DragonPC. It's a nice upgrade from 17" but I noticed there is a little patch of flickering on the bottom of left hand side corner. It will always flicker no matter what the resolution is, e.g. from 640*480 to 1600*1200.
I tried to play around with the refresh rate, optimal, 75, 85, etc, but that does not fix the problem. I tried to swin the monitor a bit (by 40 degrees) and the flickering is kinda of gone. However, I can't find anything that could have interferred with the monitor.
:( :( There are no speakers, cellphones, high power transformers, etc.
Then I noticed the defult colour temperature is @ 9300K and it's @ 100% for the RGB channel. If I use custom colour setting and set the RGB @ 80% then the flickering is not noticeable.
Anyone know what's going on? PS, I noticed the cheap-ass monitors will flicker a bit when contrast or brightness is turned up.
/edit oops, forgot system spec
The usual AMD system
GFX card is a Leadtek GF2 Ti (which has an okay output)
The spec on that monitor, http://www.proview.net/product/px/px986.htm

tried another powersocket? if u use night-saving electricity or stuff, it sometimes will flicker depeding on the circuitry desing at yer place.. mine used to flicker after 11. (when nightsaving kicks in) but since i shifted my room, it no longer happens ...
and u r 1337 enought to not put any magnitic pulse- generating items around your monitor... R u?

Hans,
I also have a microvision 17". I want to know how it compares in terms of kwality of image to the proview?
I have toyed with the idea a new monitor recently.
Na, it's cool mird-OC. I didn't know your name before hand thus...
SP: I tried to play around with the cable by twisting them but it does not help the flickering.
Paul: Nope, there are nothing close to the monitor that could generate magnitic pulses. It's an interesting idea about the nite saving thing. :)
Dusty: The monitor is a lot "brighter" than the microvision. The image quality is on par with the microvision.

Hmmm - yeah, cheap monitors don't like full brightness and contrast. They'll likely get a whole lot blurier, as the higher voltage on their beam just makes the beam less precise, and it heats up bigger patches of phosphor.
Same issue with red/green/blue up to 100%. That's just controlling individual electron guns rather than the whole lot. Obviously your red gun is the least precise ( most prone to stuffing up with higher voltages ).
Not sure why it'd flicker though, hmmm....

I used to have a Proview 19", got rid of it because it flickered randomly at the top and bottom of the screen, sometimes it would do it-sometimes it wouldnt.
Weve got 2 of them at work as well, one in the office thats a bit flaky, and one on display that jitters when its on certain resolutions (1024x768 & 1152x764).
I hate to say it man, but proview make some of the worst computer monitors on the face of the planet.
The plus side is they have a good warranty. ;)
This is ProView's reply........
This is Proview Service In China. Thank you very much for your information. We are very sorry for the accident . But we suggest you change the fresh rate as our engineers thought the problem occuring with your VGA Card . Please try the lower fresh rate ( 75hz ,60hz...) or replace a VGA card. Any result, please inform us . Thank you very much.
I've told them that my video card worked fine with other monitors, etc. There was no "accident" as well. Wonder where they got that from??? Lower the refresh rate to 60 HZ?????? WTF? Sure is sound advice coming from their engineers.
Anyway, I would never get another Proview monitor in my life.
BTW, Dusty, see if you can get the Compaq S9500 down there. It's real cheap, a bit less than the Proview but offers a good quality.

Err, changing the refresh rate.
Doesn't that just SCREAM sub-standard monitors?
Compensating for being a heap of crap perhaps ;)
Well, i know not to buy a proview for sure now ;)

I have a friend with one, and his is pretty damn good value for money.
His is the original one, not the one with the Samsung tube in it, which one have YOU got Hans?
Cheers.
I've no idea. There are no markings on the monitor saying who made it.

You'd have to pull it open and look on the bottom side of the tube to see the manufacturer's sticker.
And SecretSquirrel, I have tried both. The Samsung is marginally better - but it's still a crap screen.
Seriously, the Proview's so blurry it is totally unusable at 1600x1200. Looks rather pathetic sitting next to my ViewSonic E790 ( let alone a ViewSonic P series ;) ). And that's the Samsung tube I'm talking about....

I haven't been impressed with my flatmates monitor. It's a true flatscreen 17".
Two weeks after getting it i noticed a line down the whole screen nearly a cm thick slightly right of center.
It's been there ever seen. Took me pointing it out for my flatmate to even notice tho.
The screen is less than 6mths old and it's now also ghosting.
It sits on 1024 x 768 @ 85hz.
Changing it to other options hasnt helped.
I wouldn't get one myself after this, and certainly not after hearing you have problems too Hans.
