hehe Mird - you're such a sh!t :)
Authenticating is a minimum of $10 and 1-2 days...he wants it now :P
Also, if people dont use the service for selling, they probably dont want to waste the $10...I on the other hand have spent a few times that much on fees...but its all good.
Anyway, I did it @ 9am or so...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Dear Blair,
The question and answer feature on Trade Me is provided for you to ask and
answer questions on an auction.
We don't allow people to use it to bypass the auction process by
negotiating a price, asking for other goods, or leaving their contact
details. If an auction doen't reach reserve the seller can choose to use
the 'fixed price offer' feature to sell the item to bidders in the
auction.
The comment you placed was:
'Hi there, can you please urgently contact desilva10 at hotmail.com
please. Would like to buy card :)
'
Please consider this a friendly warning - however further instances will
mean that your access to the question and answer feature will be
restricted.
Regards,
Trade Me Support

HEHEE ...
/begin rant
The whole point of the auction system is that its an auction.. when people were allowed to post email addresses it got out of control.. some one would run an auction, some would post an email address and buy the item and the auction would still be running.. it's stupid, it's also illegal and annoying to start an auction then say stuff all you guys bidding on my auction in good faith.. I've sold the thing to this guy that emailled me / or that I emailled / that saw walking down the street. etc
If they want to use email to sell an item rather then an auction.. ffs use an ad instead of an auction on trademe
/end rant

The main problem is that you need to be an authorised member to actually bid now, I don't really want to pay ten bucks just to be able to spend more...(Sure I understand that they need to stop fake bids etc, but it is a pain)

you can still bid if you're not authenticated, it's just you can only bid up to a certain amount ($100 or something). but the other thing is a number of people are running authenticated members only auctions because it keeps those stray/phantom bidders away.
yes, trademe are milking it for all it's worth, but if you want to use their site you just accept their rules - pure and simple.

No, it makes sense.
They allowed you to do that a while ago, but everyone just sent each other email's, and bought outside Trademe. That way Trademe makes no $$$s, can't afford the servers, and bye bye Trademe.
Duh!
Talking about Tm servers,
What do you think it would cost to run something like that??

Wouldn't cost too much ... need some decent bandwidth/hosting but its like 99% local nz traffic

It's not the hardware that costs.
They've got their own rather sophisticated software, and staff looking after things and upgrading everything. THAT'll be where the main cost lies I would expect....

i think their servers are based in the states now (not totally sure tho, can't be bothered doing a tracert), so bandwidth costs would be minimal. they only have a handful of staff so although that'd be the major expense i wouldn't think it's that much compared to how much revenue that site is generating these days. BIG BICCIES.
oh well, good for some :)

I think the biggest hurdle is actually getting traders, what is the point of a marketplace with no buyers or sellers? I think they are also now spending some money on advertising, and that could easily become their biggest cost...

yeah they've done well... several auction sites have started since trademe "got big" and even tho they're completely free not many people actually use them.
but do the math on trademe revenue eh... it's pretty impressive... they have on average 3 successful auctions finishing every minute, generating maybe an average of $0.70 per auction (this is a very conservative guestimate too). that's $2.80 a minute, 1440 minutes a day... around $4000 a day, 365 days of the year = $1.4m a year...
and like i said, that's conservative IMO, but even if they earned half that they're doing pretty well. it has to be the most (economically) successful NZ website ever.
so maybe they spend $150,000 a year on advertising (which is probably a bit of an exageration)... it's a pretty small expense.
no wonder sam is now living it up in some tropical paradise :D
