I have recently bought an XP1800+. one day when i was pulling my computer apart (as you do), somehow my hand kinda went *bing* (as it does) and somehow flung the CPU halfway accross the room. Well anyway, I picked up the bloody thing and found a pin missing.....does anybody know how to fix this????? Can it be repaired under the suppliers warranty????
thanks in advance.......:(

geezr i dunno, back in 386 days i fixed a busted pin by shoving a bit of solid core wire in the hole andputting the chip down, but xp's pins are smaller and run 5x the speen the 386 did total ( :P ) you might have to solder a wire onto it, and onto the board and join em up wiht a chocholate block (so you can take it out easy)

Mate - unless you invent some hotass story about a flying monkey, some enormous breasts and a fluffy kitten, you probably wont be able to get that repaired without a charge (of a new cpu)

Try rigging a wire, like the Wibbley says.

If it is a missing pin, you won't get a warranty replacement for your own mistakes. Those pins are in there pretty firmly, so I don't know how you could get one out.

Grrr!!

Does it work without the pin? Sometimes they do ... and then you could have ... just noticed it this morning.

heh, yea could be a grounding pin or something? p1e's 20gig cuda goes fine without one of the pins, but a supose a cpu is a bit different.

And also, i doubt a pin has come out, as deviant said, they are held in there pretty tightly. Are you sure its not just one of the pins that are meant to be left out? Like in the corners, as KJ said

if the pin is going to come off its more likey to be bent, it wont just "fall" out.

Unless it got bet 3 to 4 times then it may "snap" off

well this is how it goes....
I have a KD266....PLEASE DON'T STONE ME....
and i shoved the thing in there after being pissed off at the ****er for ****ing up the bios while I was flashing....after pulling it out (the AXP) i noticed the pins were bent!!!....i realise that my socket is slightly faulty, but i thought that this was some other random reason at the tme.....well i eventually tried to bend it back and.....snap.....bugger!!!
The broken pins were near the edge, after shoving it back in....(less forcefully this time) it wouldn't work even though i had correctly and successfully flashed and upgraded the bios (after a few tries). Because the pins are gold..and need a certain resistance to operate properly, it would be quite impossible for my to try and shove in a piece of wire, or even gold, since the thickness will be different, and hence the resistance....etc...
so....buggar....i can't do anything....but i've learned my bloody lesson......now I have to save up for another couple of weeks to buy another one.....oh, that's right, i still haven't bought any christmas pressies!!!!!! looks like it will be nxt year b4 i am using my 1800 setup again....thanks for everyone's help...

You could buy a new Duron 1.2GHz for $65 to tide you over, or get a cheaper one off trademe. At least it's something until you get a new XP. Then your new XP might be a TBred-B and get to 2.3GHz.

All things considered, I would say late Jan possibly, Feb probably, and March at the latest.

AMD made heaps of Palaminos thinking Q3-4 was going to be good. It wasn't and it's taken ages to get through all the stock. we are finally into TBred-A stock all over the world. AMD had slowed down manufacturing by this time, so didn't make as many TBred-A's and most of them would have been XP2200+'s. This only took about 4-5 weeks before they found a problem, and then TBred-B's came out a couple of weeks later.

March and we should be seeing Bartons and Hammers.

First reports may even occur in December.

Use it for something useful ffs. Like my Pentium Comb or the 486 Pot Scoarer.

Nothing. It works just as good as a real comb.

I sold the XP chip to the local Computer shop, he claimed that his cousin fixes these all the time......pfff...what a crock of ****.

Anyway, I do have a Fried Duron 750 if you want it......This is another story.....kinda goes like this...Occlock to 1003Mhz (144Mhz FSB x 7.0Multiplier) and play GTA3 for about 5 mins before getting a phone call.....run to the phone.....come back about 10/15 mins later....it's sitting there trying to POST!!!! just keeping reseting and going nuts....after turning it off, cooling the chip down (it was almost untouchable at that point) and cleaning the surface (and locking the multiplier bridges again...just for safety) the thing booted and said BIOS Checksum error...and was asking for the BIOS flash disk...a few seconds later it would just reboot.

If you are interested...please PM me...
