hehe I did this cuz I couldn't find a good guide for mpeg2 2 avi on the net. So here goes:
1. Software you will need:
Smart Ripper
Flask Mpeg
normalize
Perso's normalize gui
Virtual Dub
Radium Mp3 codec
Divx 5.01 codec
Equadors Divx calculator
2. Ripping The DVD
1. Install and run Smartripper
2. choose the destination directory (a)
3. press the start button (b)

Note: don't worry about any of the other settings, they are not required for a standard rip
3. Calculating the bitrate
1. Download and install Ecuador's avi bitrate calculator
2. open and choose video
3.put the values in
I reccomend you use a audio bitrate of 96kbps
get the time off the back of the dvd box or add up the times of each vob file.
write the bitrate down somewhere as you will be using it later
also If you don't want to chop the avi file up because it will not fit on a cd then shave about 10 off the bitrate, this will give you a slightly lower file size
4. Compressing the vob files
1. Install and startup Flask Mpeg
2. Choose |file| open media, then pick the first vob file from the dvd or the IFO file (It should automatically find all other vob files)
3. Choose |Options| global project options:
Video Tab:
Frame Size (a) - width=720, height=576
Leave everything else the same except check deinterlace video in Video Structure (b)

4. Click Show Output pad at the bottom, this should show a frame of your movie with big black bars at the top and bottom.
We are going to remove these to save space
check the crop box (a) then click height -16 until some of the picture is covered up.
now click top offset +1 until the top bar is inline with the top of the viewable area, keep changing this and height antil there is minimal black bars on top and bottom of the viewable area.
This should look like this

Now click hide and go into the files tab
5. Just change the output video file to a directory on your hard drive and go into the general tab
6. Just change the search size to 50000 (a) and If you want check shutdown computer after finishing (b)

Now click ok and get out of that
7. make sure the output format in options is avi output, then go into |options| Output format options
choose the top (video) select codec. click the dropdown bar and choose divx 5.01 then configure
For variable bitrate choose -2-pass, first pass
set encoding bitrate to the value you got from equador's bitrate calculator (coming soon)

Click ok again to get back to the AVI plugin screen
8. Now click the audio button:
for format choose mp3 and bitrate whatever you chose in the bitrate calculator.
click ok and ok again. You are now ready to encode the movie.
click the flask it button. This should take anywhere from 2-6 hours so you are best go and do something, go have a sleep if your computer is sub 1ghz as this will take about 6hrs
8. If you have shutdown your computer then you will have to do the other options again. once that is done go back to |options| output format options and click the video codec and once again go into divx5.01 config.
in variable bitrate mode choose 2-pass second pass.
click ok until all windows are closed then click flask it again.
This generally takes less time than the first pass but will still take a long time.
Congratulations you now have a working divx rip, if the volume is too low then you will have to normalize the audio (below). If the file size is unable to fit on a cd follow my steps (below)
5. Normalize the Audio
This step requires Virtual Dub and normalize w/ gui installed
1. Start up Virtual Dub and click |file| open video file
click |audio| full processing mode
Once again click |audio| compression.
choose no compression then get out of that screen
click |file| save wav and save the wav to somewhere with a fiulename such as audio.wav
2. Now load up the normalize gui
change the settings in application options from -l (ratio) to -m(percent)
choose the input file (eg audio.wav)
and the output file (eg something like audionrm.wav)
check -o file
now click go and wait for that process to finish
3. Load up Virtual Dub again and choose |file| open video file
now do EXCACTLY as I say:
select video: dont process video
select audio: full processing mode
select audio: wav audio
a window should popup so select your normalized wav (eg audionrm.wav)
select audio: interleaving
change preload to 50000 then press ok
select audio: compression
choose mp3 then the bitrate you chose in the bitrate calculator
and choose 48,000hz if your soundcard supports it
click ok then |file| save avi
this process should take about 20-60mins and when it's finished you should notice the amplified audio. If this went ok then you have done a successful rip.
If the file size is still too high go to the next step
6. Reducing The Filesize
This will show how to remove the credits. In a newer version of this guide I will show how to make the start and end lower bitrates.
1. load up Virtual Dub and open your avi file
2. select video: direct stream copy
select audio: direct stream copy
3. Move the slider (a) to the right to about the start of the credits,
use the keyframe controls (b) to move back and forth
goto the first keyframe where the credits has started then click the end offset (c) button. move the slider back to the very start and click on the start offset (c) button.
If this still doesn't get the filesize lower than desired you will have to remove the start, If that fails also you will have to re-encode the video so it will be small enough.

There you go, It's not a finished guide as you can see, but should be enough for you to get a good rip.
