From what i under stand from T/C you have to get the modem off them. Its part of the $99 you for cable install.

Er, no.

Its is $17 per month. The $99 charge is the cost of digging up your driveway, which I dont need, Teltra cables to the gate, overhead, (shared front driveway) and the neighbours have it, so it would be a 20 metre swinging cable install.

Anyway, JB said he can get a good D-Link one for $350 incl. Its only a single output port, but it does both Cable and ADSL :)

T/c do not allow you do your owen installs so they charge $99.

No matter what the install. I got cable first and then the land lord he got his about 2 weeks later.. his cables are in the same ducting etc.

The houses are 5 meter apart and they still charged him $99 for 5 meter cable run.

And i don't think they allow you to install the modem not to mention your own your modems. Unless they have changed there rules in the last few months... I suggest your confirm this with T/c first..

Its a piss easy install.. ie host name, paradise dns.. static ip, gateway and your done.. no dialing upetc or usernames/passwords

*well /me would say this...*

Wouldn't it be better to buy a cable ROUTER? Then plug into a swich/hub - and instant online LANAGE!! :D

( but sorry, no - I don't know where you get those from either :( )

i've been told by a "redundant" former TelstraSaturn employee that they now use DOCSIS as their standard, so if your friend is willing to pay for int'l shipping, there's a plethora of cable modems from US stores to choose from. www.axiontech.com is one.

Yeah, a router was the obvious solution, esp. the one JB found for me...I dont mind D-Link as a brand, and that one does both ADSL and cable...so even better.

As for the U.S. ones, I saw a Dynalink one on ebay for $40US which is X T Ream ly cheap...but then again, I'll have to pay $6000 for a bloody power converter hehe

Noone seems to sell the motorola ones T/C supplies...and those would probably be ideal, cheapish, fastish, and compatibleish.

Cheers

The motorola use the brand name SURFBoard, try searchig for that. The model i have is SB3100. I found there is an SB4200 on www.pricewatch.com You also try motorola broadband website at http://www.gi.com/noflash/index.html

Where did JB get spec/info for that ADSL/Cable modem? I have search the dlink site/s and could not find anything. All i could find was this Ethernet Cable/DSL Internet Gateway thing... but you still need to add your own ADSL/cable modem to it.

Also T/C also give a 10mb Dlink Nic as well.. i didn't install it.. just used a spare i had in my machine.

DOCSIS is now called CableLab Cert... just make sure the modem you buy is DOCSIS 1.1 or upgradable to it. Most of the elcheapo's on ebay are not upgradeable to DOCSIS 1.1 aka Cable Cert. Have a look at http://www.cablemodem.com/ for more info on it.

Eh? The D-link Di-701 is a single input (WAN) single output (LAN) router for cable or adsl. If you still had to add a modem to it, what would be the point of only one port? You're not thinking that they are just Switches/Hubs are you?

If so, no.

Don't worry about power converters unless you're drawing zillions of amps, I'm running my printer off of a nifty little converter I got at DSE for $60 NZ. ;)

OK.

Yes, the Di-701 seems suitable. Waiting for T/C to reply to me about it however.

I'll post the result in 'ere.

Those are pretty muth@fvkkin good, mine used to get me less than 150 ms pings anywhere across the continental US. All that and 4 Mb/s for only $34.95/month including ISP.

...Thank You for your enquiry regarding your own cable modem.

Unfortunately you can't use your own modem. We supply them at a rental price of $17.00 / mnth, unless you have a package deal (ie: phone cable TV internet) in which case it's included in the price.

Check out www.telstraclear.co.nz for package deals etc...

So basically, if you have a T/C package deal, you dont need to worry aboot a modem! Cheers :)

I'm keen...

Anyone want to buy a cheap ADSL modem off me? hehee
