whoah, i was looking in that upgrading post, and heaps of u upgrade every 6 months, thats so often!@!!

1. how long (abouts, on average, roughly, give or take etc) does your monitor last?

2. what parts of your computer have stayed (ie never been upgraded since the first computer you bought)

3. say if you have a hard disk drive, a cd writer and a dvd drive, what should b primary/secondary master/slave?

4. is there much point in buying expensive network cards, since everyone else will have realtek chipsets, (ie their card will slow ur card right?)

5. where do u get all ur money to upgrade (student loan/folks/work or what@#???)

1. Don't know

2. Keyboard...... my mate's even got a commodore KB that's serial

3. Depends on your set up.....what speeds the devices are e.g ATA 66, ATA 100 etc...... but I would have your main HDD as primary master.

4. Depends on what you want to do with it.... some cards OC better than others.... or so I'm told

5. Sold my soul :p

1. how long (abouts, on average, roughly, give or take etc) does your monitor last?
-my old 14" ones are still going from 94. My Philips 107S which is over 3 years old broke down once (cost 130$ to repair), and looks like it will again.

2. what parts of your computer have stayed (ie never been upgraded since the first computer you bought)
well, my first computer was a 486. but not counting that.
My atx case with my 250W PSU, and that's it.

3. say if you have a hard disk drive, a cd writer and a dvd drive, what should b primary/secondary master/slave?
currently: P M - HDD
P S - HDD
S M - CDRW
S P - DVD

4. is there much point in buying expensive network cards, since everyone else will have realtek chipsets, (ie their card will slow ur card right?) no, i don't find any advantage for me.

5. where do u get all ur money to upgrade (student loan/folks/work or what@#???)
I'm a student, don't upgrade very often, I made heaps of money working at BK in 6th form, and live of the intrest and get a couple of job's everynow and then. Only computer related.

1) depends on brand, batch, how you treat it
2) umm fdd and hdd
3) hdd = primary master, dvdrom = secondary master, cdwriter = secondary slave (the dvd and cdr are vice versa)
4) not really, though you may as well get a good mid level card such as a netgear, cos realtek = teh su><
5) 5 years in a butcher shop gets you a little bit of pocket money ;) monitor was a course related cost

1) Well I've got my triple setup. The 21" is VERY old, second hand actually ... so it's been around for a good 5 years. My 19" are new.

2) Probably my hard drive, but that is being replaced soon. Opps. Uhm ... IDE devices generally stay unless you got an urge to upgrade them to faster better or bigger ones.

3) Everything on it's own channel.

4) Yes and no. It's not about the speed the network goes at, it's the CPU cycles they take up. I heard any 3COM to the really expensive Intel ones use very little CPU cycles, while RealTek uses a lot. But the CPU cycles isn't enough to cry over. O/Cing to. Unless your a mainstream server [in which case, your constantly sening out packets as well as receiving] you need these.

5) Jobs which have insane hours with relative high pay... pocket money ... here and there really. Just scrap up what I can find.

but i only have 2 ide channels, primary and secondary

so the general consensus is that the cdrw should always b different to the hdd?

cos if they r the same, the cd will make buffer underrun cds (is it cos the cd cant use the channel if the hdd is using it?)

1. had this 15 inch leo since 2000, not planning on changing it till next year.

2. well since my first comp was a 486... nothing. but if you count my first decent computer (P2 350 - 2000)... then hmm... nothing except monitor and keyboard ;)

3. yea as above

4. yes if you're on a network often, dont have a flash cpu, and overclock. otherwise no imho.

5. work in holidays, student loan, olds, bit of everything :D

1. Still have the monitor that came with my first computer. Some 14" CTX something or rarther. Although at the moment she's with some crazys that whetu knows all too well, but I hope to get her back one day.

2. Nothing. However with one computer I believe everything except the case, cpu and mobo has been replaced/upgraded.

3. I would place them depending on how I would be expecting to use them. Generally if you are going to be copying something between one device and another, you want them on seperate channels. For the fun of it, assume I had a single hd, a dvd drive and a cdr.

If I thought I would be regurarly copying cd's directly from another cd I would place the dvd and cdr on seperate channels. The HD I would definately have as Primary Master. Depending on if I thought I would be copying stuff from the dvd drive to the computer often (ie ripping), or if I would be primarly writing stuff to the CDR would affect where I place the two, ie which would become Secondary Master, and would would be Primary Slave. If I thought I would probably never be copying directly between the DVD and CDR, I would probably place them both on Slave.

Actually now that I think of it, I'm not sure what I would do when a 2nd harddrive as also in the system.

4. I believe there is some merit in doing this.

5. Work.

1. Well I have had good monitors go bad after about 4-5 years

2. I think I still have an 8-bit ISA sound card from an old 386 around here somewhere....

3. I have 2 HDDs, 1 CD and 1 CDR: The HDD with my OS and swap space as well as some scratch space for dropping CDs on etc is primary master, the CDrom is primary slave, the other HDD, which is mainly used for bulk storage is secondary master and the CDR is secondary slave, when making CDs I always have the data in a temp dir on the primary HDD, and I don't run other programs or anything which may access the other HDD.

4. It will improve your computers performance in other areas while networked, rather than improve the network performance.

5. Student loan and some part-time teaching type work

oh yeh, that makes sense, if u have a fast network card, then when ur transferring files, it doesnt slow the comp down

har har yeh its clear now
