I know there is a few home theatre buffs here so would be interested to see what type of gear ppl are using be it your home theatre PC or a dedicated home theatre system, maybe some thoughts on your components and future upgrades. Some pics would be cool to :)

I got a Sony home theatre setup around this time last year. I'm not a Sony nut or anything I just happened to get a package deal and its the best I could do on my budget of $8000

Specs
Sony 29" XA29
Sony STR-DB940 DD5.1 DTS receiver
Sony DVP-S336 DVD player
Sony EZ715 HIFI Vid
SS series speakers
SS-CNX7 Centre Speaker
Sony SS-TX7S fronts
SS-TX7 rears
SA-WM40 120watt sub
Around 30 DVD movies

First of all the TV is good value, being 29" maybe a bit small but I've got a small lounge and after ripping out my fire place a 29" is the only TV that would fit in the wall and on my budget I couldn't affort a good 33" anyway.

The STR-DB940 (http://www.audioreview.com/PRD_124504_2718crx.aspx) is a great home theatre receiver for those on a budget. It aint no Denom but for $1800 its got heaps of features and heaps of grunt. The DVD player is sonys entry level model. All I can say is its multizone and I haven't had any problems with it. There is a few formats it don't support like SVCD and CDRW but that don't concern me.

Last of all the speakers. I've heard a few ppl rubish sony speakers and after comparing my sony speakers to a few others I fully agree, they are very average. The sony speakers I have are made in the USA which apparently are better quality then sony speakers made in Japan but I've tried a friends B&W speakers on my setup and the difference is pretty obvious especially the fronts and rears. I do like me sony sub though. Being my first ht setup I'm still blown away by DD 5.1 and DTS sound but upgrading the speakers and getting a cdrom player are priorities.

This is how my setup looks, recessed into the wall after ripping out my fire place (my back still aches) . One advantage of getting the same brand is all bits are the same colour, in this case silver :)

My Mates call me a home theare tin ass

Sony XA29 great TV couldnt afford the ES43 i was seriously looking at
Sony STR-DB925 reciever
Pinoneer DV-515 DVD player
Philips Video
Infinite 2600 series front speakers
Axcent subwoofer
horrible technics centre speaker
and sony midi system speakers mounted on the walls for the rears

why a "tin ass" cos the sounds cost me $1450 + a doz

the TV was the most expensive at $2000 including cabinet

The fronts are adeqaute speakers the plan is to replace the fronts with some home built units that a friend is designing
then get a new centre speaker
move the infinites to the rear and possible add a better sub

The Sony reciever does a good job im very happy with it but it's not so good as far as music goes but i guess thats not what its designed for

The DVD is multi zone and the only problem it has is accepting audio CDs sometimes no probs with DVD's though

Video cos i didnt have one and needed something to tape the rally and dark angel it was the cheapest in the shop ;)

think thats about it
as always things will be continuously tweaked

Puter does everything at the mo with the dvd drive and a gametheater xp.

For sounds I have what are now 4 * shagged cerwin vega vs 12's (blown every midrange and one tweeter I think:( ) and 2 * playmaster pro amps for the juice.

I'll be buying new drivers for the speakers sometime soon and also another pair of speakers for the center front and center rear with a 3rd playmaster. 1400W rms @ < 0.09% THD

Not sure on what tv to get yet though. Just been using the puter as one for the last 4 months or so now since my flatmate left and took his tv with him:rolleyes: Prolly budget for around $2000 on the tv. So I guess It'll end up being a standard flatscreen 29'
