View Full Version : 2400+ or 2600+?

Is it worth the extra $90 to get a 2600+ instead of a 2400+?
What I allready have is:
Gigabyte 7VAXP KT400
Crucial Radeon 9700 Pro
Samsung 256MB DDR333
Maxtor 7200rpm 40GB ATA133
Volcano 9
I could buy a Sound Blaster LIVE card with that extra $90, other wise I'd to wait a few months to get it.
Tell me what you think,
Aslo, the 2400+ and 2600+ are 266MHZ FSB right, or 333?
Thanks

for only $90, you might aswell. either way it's an expensive CPU.
and they're both 266MHz FSB. AFAIK only the 2700+ is 333MHz FSB atm...

the 2600+ comes in 2 flavours, 2130Mhz @ 133 fsb and 2075Mhz @ 166fsb.. the 166fsb version is signifficantly faster even though it is clocked slightly lower :D

significantly faster? dunno about that... it seems there are some real exaggerations going on as to the real world benefit of the 333MHz FSB.

you know why the 2600+ is in two flavours, and why the lower clocked one has a fsb of 333Mhz? Because the performance is the same, hence the rating is the same.
A 55Mhz decrease in CPU clock made up by a 66Mhz FSB increase....
althou benchmark comparisons show that it performs better in those tests requiring high memory bandwidth....but not much improvement elsewhere...

I'm with Binky. Also how much ate the 2400+'s. $90 more over what?

Don't know about the 2600 but I have my locked 2400 running at 2177mhz with a Volcano 7+ on medium. Temps never rise over 40C and as I'm writing this its about 36C....Rock stable....at least a week since a reboot.
However, if I raise it any higher it looses stability and crashes occasionally.
I would imagine the XP2600 is worth the xtra $90. Sod the sound card! I would have bought the 2600 if it had been available 6 weeks ago. Shortly after, the differential was about $350....$90 sounds good.

I've been reading how the 2400+ and 2600+ come multiplier unlocked. Have you tried cahnging the multiplier Irish Whiskey?

I have the options of 8 through 15 under Multiplier in Bios but it does not seem to like anything other that AUTO (15X) .
I just tried 14X...would not even post.
I just bumped up the FSB and I'm now running at 2219MHZ (stable for 10 mins LOL)....writing this on it.
Temp is 34C .
I'll try a little higher now.....

I just set the multiplier to 8 (16) and it boots up. Seems to be stable. 8.5 will not work tho. So, it looks like I can use 15X & 16X at the mo.

id get the 2400+ its the same stepping, and u can change the fsb and multiplier
why are u getting that mobo? i guess gig is good stable but not great ocers
get the latest epox mobo that u can change multiplier and fsb easily without touching the cpu.

Already asked him this. He hasn't unlocked the chip but different multipliers work. It seem to confirm that these chips come unlocked as standard.
Must be cause AMD think "what the hell, you can't overclock them much anyway".

FWIW:
Running Asus A7V8X, XP2600 166 version @ 185FSB x 12.5 mult. = 2312. Air cooled with Volcano 7+. I think the vcore is around 1.7-1.75. Temp. is around 43C. Crunches seti WU's daily and plays UT2003 fine.
At 185FSB x 13, it took vcore of 1.85 to boot but wouldn't run 3dMark2001se.
My guess is that the CPU could run in the mid 2300's but something gets wonky when I get close to 190 FSB. Get a corrupt registry error on boot at the higher FSB.
Just my 2cents. :)

Did you have to unlock your chip to change multipliers? or did it come unlocked?

mmmmmm nice setupthere Oldguy... well done :)

Nope, came unlocked. :)
Just checked again. Running 44C whilst Seti is crunching. The Vcore reads 1.79 even though the Mobo is set to 1.75. I think the latest bios fixes this. My version is AV8x4m09.
I'm still a bit of a noob on this whole OCing thing. I could probably run the FSB slower with a higher multiplier. I'm not real sure which is better.

more mem bandwidth eg higher fsb is always better
and besides u can get closer to the chip maximum by using the fsb

Yeah that's what I thought. But SiSoft says that memory bandwidth is the same for FSB 185x12.5 as FSB 178X13. Does that make any sense? Those are nearly the same CPU speeds but I would have thought the higher FSB would show a better memory bandwidth.

it could dependant on what the timings are, and if they're falling back to accomodate the higher FSB - what RAM are you using?
it's also a good thing to remember that SiSoft is a synthetic benchmarks, and in many instances can be wildly inaccurate ;)

Uhm...OG puts bifocals on......shuffles thru a stack of papers.....oh yeah here it is.....Corsair DDR3200cas2....set at 2,3,3,6,t1.

Can confirm that my XP2200+ came unlocked straight off the shelf :) All multipliers available and reasy to go :D :D :D
Have managed to get the thing to boot at 2380 - but 2250 is the best I can do for a reasonably stable oc at this time ;)

well, if your getting it that high, it must be a Tbred B...Unless your using extreme cooling.
look at his sig :)
