I have a Dynalink 210 Router (after recall), a 16 port etherlan 10 base t hub, and a old p 100 with:
32 megs of ram
a 100 meg hdd
2 x 10/100 network cards
I managed to get smothwall 0.9.9 SE GPL installed and i can access it from my machine via IE but cannot seem to get it (the smooth wall box) to conect to the router. all the appropriate led's are on on the nci's and the router.
The router supports/ has the following features
NAT firewall with ip packer filtering
PAP & CHAP
DNS realy
ARP proxy
full specs ate at http://www.dynalink.co.nz/products/specs/rta210_specs.htm
for my smoothwall box the ip addresses are set to:
green interface is set to 192.168.10.1
red interface is set to "static" and 192.168.10.99
the sub net mask is 255.255.255.0 for both
i can ping the rest or my lan from the smothwall box and my main comp will ping the smothwall box.
But i cannot ping the router from the smoothwall box but can when it is just the router connected to my lan directly.
thats my main prob but i also have a few other questions
1. does my router already have a firewall or firewall like capabilities
2. is smoothwall a "statefull fire wall"
thanx for your time

you have two interfaces on the same range... you'll most likely have to have them on seperate ranges.. Try that out... could be your problem

Your router does already have some firewall functionality.
Just via the fact that it offers NAT it gives a certain ( lower ) level of protection. But no, it's not as secure as a good hardware or software firewall ( but enough that most hackers won't bother ).

whetu what do you mean by diffrent ranges?
i tried 192.168.10.x for green and 192.168.1.x for red
is that a diffrent range ?
if not a quick pointer would be helpfull

yep thats the one danster.. for example here our green network is 192.168.0.x and our red network is 192.168.7.x
make sure your smoothies red interface and your dsl ethernet interface are on the same range

i tried
red 192.168.7.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
green 192.168.10.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
router 192.168.7.0 subnet 255.255.255.0
it didnt work
i also tried
red 10.0.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0
green 192.168.10.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
router 10.0.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
it also didn's work
do i need to change the sub net?
i noticed the green is eth 1 but the red dosent seam to have eth anything
the routeh can be a dhcp server is there any way i can config the red interface to recieve the ip that the router broadcasts.
thanx again

try these settings (use the dns servers that apply to your isp)
afaik you should never use x.x.x.0 or x.x.x.255 they are reserved...
you wont need to change the subnet masks.. just leave em
My Smoothwall's green interface is set to 192.168.0.1 as that is the default that NT boxes look for.
The workstations on the Green Network are all set to 192.168.0.x, and point to the smoothie as the default gateway.
My Smoothwall's red interface is set to 192.168.7.2, and points to the router as the default gateway
My router's default ip is 192.168.7.1

also double check that both cards are detected, both are assigned to an interface, and the other thing to make sure of is that you havent got your cables mixed... that caught me out once.. i was tearing my hair out for one and a half hours only to find out I had my green network attempting to interface with the red nic

I'm off to bed soon so if you still have problems, hopefully one of the smoothie goons will pickup where i left off...

ROFL - nah man, you CAN NOT use .255 and .0.
Lol - .255 is a broadcast address. Sending something to .255 sends it to EVERYTHING ;). And .0 is a NETWORK address. So you can't send anything to .0 - it identifies a network, not a host.
Also, stay away from .1 and .254 - they tend to be reserved by things like routers.
Use .2-.253 - there's normally plenty of room in there ;).

Did you update the Gateway on the Machines behind the smoothie to point to it ? Is the smoothie RED NIC Gateway correctly pointing to the Routers Addr ?
Are you assigning the other IP statically or via DHCP ?
