After the amazing success of installing a video card recently which was the 1st time I have opened the case in 3 years (since new) I attempted to instal more RAM.

My mobo
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/ga6bxc.htm
has a 64mb stick of pc100 and I bought 2 2nd-hand 128mb sticks of what I understood to be pc133 but they wont fit.
One of the sticks says pc800 so I dunno if hat helps at all.

They wont fit in my ram slots tho, they have 2 notches near the middle, about a 1cm apart and my ram slots require a notch near the middle and a notch near the end.

Given this sketchy info( I can give other info written on the ram as needed) does anyone know what RAM will fit?
I heard my mobo would take pc133 ok so Im stumped.

yeh ur mobo uses pc133 SDram,
sounds like you've been given RDram (Rambus) for P4 mobos

definately sounds like Rambus, not that I've seen any before. but now that you know what you are looking for, you wont be fooled next time. Hard way to learn.

how much did you pay for that RAM, cause RAMbus is expensive, and it works in pairs, and it is RAMBuse cause it says PC800, while you need PC133, :D

I only paid $60 which is good price, esp fpr Rambus....and I thin it might have passive cooling too, it has these sort of covers that cover all one side.
I checked with him at least twice that it was pc133 I was getting cos his English wasnt too flash, oh well, if I cant sell it on trademe he wll have to refund me or he will be the one learning the hard way

60$, that's cheap, you can sell it on trademe for quite a bit,
try selling it off first and make some money out of it, if not return it to him,

pretty strange that he didn't sell you a pair, only one,

Yeh I got a pair. 2 X 128mb sticks, sorry wasnt clear.
One sez pc800 and the other just has a serial number or something, they both have 2 notches close together in the midle so I spose hey are the same type of RAM.

Edit: Oh yeah I just checked out rambus prices, assuming this stuff works I should get a good price, it would cost about $300 new

is what it looks like(not my actual RAM) shows the position of the notches and the cover things on one side I was saying :D

well okay, put it this way: that's how your system compares with your bus speed at 158MHz... remember, the RD-RAM system in the comparison is running a bus speed of 100MHz... so think how your system would compare to that same RD-RAM system if it were running a bus speed of 158MHz. that is a 58% increase in bus speed.

;)

<SORRY, BUT>

BWAHAHAHAHAAAA....
I needed a good laugh today :D

All the above problems and notes are already mentioned in my very-soon memory article ( just got to finish off the overclocking section ;) ).

I think my unlocked Athlon XP on my Iwill XP333 holds it's own for memory performance (180MHz FSB):

ha...my duron @1gig/ 166 fsb gets near that..(2250)

I've gotta admit that's not a very good score at all...

I'm pretty sure I could do higher too. The XP333 allows really high fsbs, but it clocks DOWN the memory speed with the PCI bus speed, so actual performance gains are similar to other boards at their lower fsbs - kinda weird :)

To show you what I mean, the below scores were done @ 175MHz on my Abit KR7A-RAID. Because the RAM is just PC2100, I can't crank the timings - so 2.5-3-3-6-2 for me :(. If I got some better RAM ( say - some Corsair PC2700+ ), I'm sure I could do 180MHz fsb and 2-2-2-5-1 timings. And that'd probably leave your scores a way behind.

These scores already have a better Float score, it's just the Int score letting them down. My combined score of 4505 beats your 4474.

Of course, you shouldn't take this the wrong way. I mean, it's not like your score is SLOW or anything.... hehehhe :D
*still wants an evil grin smiley*

DAMN joo KJ!!!!! :p

Although it has to be said: The XP333 absolutely sucks, apart from the highish FSB's - it absolutely sucks, it's the dogs bollocks, it's the mutts nuts. It really is a sad POS.

With the December BIOS I could only get about 700/800MBps in the Sandra Memory bench. When I updated to the April BIOS (BETA) I started getting about 1800/1900MBps. Do you think a BIOS update could account for an increase in bandwidth that large? I think Sandra is wrong anyway.

Also my XP333 is even crappier than ever now - I realised I cannot print with the FSB @ 180Mhz, even though i'm using the 1/5 divider. It won't even POST with the 1/6 divider enabled. Although the board has been getting worse lately especially after I dropped my phillips head screwdriver onto the edge of the BIOS - breaking a chunk of plastic off the socket and leaving one of the BIOS pins exposed....... A few Windows errors and random reboots since then..........

I don't think I can wait for teh KT400, I am seriously considering the Epox 8K3A+ @ this stage.....

Care to provide some proof?

there's something that you guys may or may not remember in these comparisons of yours. the Sandra mem bench is inherently flawed because it is synthetic... because there are so many variables to memory systems these days it's practically impossible to create a benchmark as a basis for comparison - something Sandra tries to do.

i certainly wouldn't bet my life on it....

Man, i'm not sure why you're into dogs bollocks (in whatever way) but, umm.... all I can say is: PM SecretSquirel or Shag to talk about it. :p

congrats farns, i really wish someone would send me some RDRAM for the price of PC133  :p
