BTW, I'm WinXP Pro and MSIE 6.0
You guys?

I just get a security warning over and over - it isn't actually downloading nor running the installation program behind that security warning

And SCR*W them for not giving easy to read and trace HTML code - I don't think I can be bothered trying to track the actual file URL

I had no problems and have Windows XP Pro and IE6.

Had the activex security warning come up twice, clicked okay to both and then to okay to the final message box which prompted me to restart the system.

On a very quick look, they are just using ActiveX controls to implement windows update, so its not an .exe that is downloaded than run, it is actually a .cab file. Also I think it actually downloads --first-- then prompts you with the security warning depending on your security settings, and then continues. Also from memory I think its implemented through some tag on the html page, where basically ie goes "woo do i have this already, nope i don't i'll download it else i'll use whats already installed on the system". Thou I could be completely wrong with any of these statements, as its been a while since I've played with ActiveX controls and forgotten the whole methadology behind them and distribution of controls etc. Which is kinda stupid considering a couple of years ago I wrote an ActiveX control for a project I was working on.

Yea something along those lines, as they mentioned that windows update would also stop working for those with the illegal key. But I thought it was going to be disabled through the use of a service pack, and that it may display some sort of notice etc?

I have a legal copy of Windows XP, and suprisingly have legal software on all my machines. However, thanks to work have an MSDN universal subscription which includes all MS software and is updated as new software is released. (But this costs ova $6000 for the first year per person). Thou I have to be truthful and say that if work didn't provide this, I probably would have had not-so legal versions of MS software on my computer. What about others, and those experiencing problems, is your copy of WinXP legit?

I am running a perfectly legal copy of Windows XP. Even have the spiffy box and CD case to prove it ( and a CD to match :) ).

And I've tried pressing 'Yes' to security warnings over 5 times.... it just seems to be endlessly repeating :(

Can be done with other versions as well. If you look into it that file can be used to make it behave quite differently.

for those using a nonlegitimate copy of Windows. this may effect you :(

"QOUTE from Iexbeta.com"

Windows Update Starts Checking P.I.D.'s

It was only a matter of time until this happened. Microsoft is now checking the Personal Identification Number of your Operating System when you use its famous Windows Update site. Here is the new privacy statement of Windows Update, which can be view by clicking on "About Windows Update" on the left side of the Windows Update site:

Windows Update Privacy Statement

Windows Update is committed to protecting your privacy. To provide you with the appropriate list of updates, Windows Update must collect a certain amount of configuration information from your computer. This information includes:

Operating-system version number and Product Identification number
Internet Explorer version number
Version numbers of other software
Plug and Play ID numbers of hardware devices

The Product Identification number is collected to confirm that you are running a validly licensed copy of Windows. A validly licensed copy of Windows ensures that you will receive on-going updates from Windows Update. Windows Update does not collect your name, address, e-mail address, or any other form of personally identifiable information. The configuration information collected is used only for the period of time that you are visiting the site, and is not saved.

To provide you with the best possible service, Windows Update also tracks and records how many unique machines visit its site and whether the download and installation of specific updates succeeded or failed. In order to do this, Windows generates a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) that is stored on your computer to uniquely identify it. Windows Update records the GUID of the computer that attempted the download, the ID of the item that you attempted to download and install, and information about your operating system version and Internet Explorer version.

Because Windows Update does not collect personally identifiable information, the configuration information and GUID cannot be used to identify you.

i gave up on windowsupdate a while ago anyway... i get my updates from downloadable executable hotfixes, available from a number of sites.

From what I'd heard the service pack 1 wouldn't harm the non-legit OS at all. It's just that it would prevent any updates from being applied.

But how long that is going to last I don't know ;)

It appears that it's all ISP proxy related ( well, largely anyways ). This is the mail I recieved from MS tech help - thankfully cos I went in the Corporate portal ( and have XP Pro ), they just said it like it is, no crap - nice n concise :).

We are starting to see a lot of issues like yours, being resolved by
themselves due to Internet Service Providers clearing their proxy
caches. What we can do is to help speed along the process by removing
the site controls that your machine has currently.

1. Click Start, then click Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Search for the files named iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll
2. Once these files are found, leave the Search window alone for a
second. We will come back to it.
3. Un-register the iuctl.dll file by going to Start, then Run, and
typing in "regsvr32 /u iuctl.dll" without the quotes.
4. Now go back to the Search window and delete all instances of the
iuctl.dll and the iuengine.dll file here.
5. You might be prompted by System File Protection to insert the
Windows XP installation CD-ROM. Click Cancel. (You will download newer
versions of the files from the Windows Update Site). When you see the
prompt "Keep these unrecognized file versions," click Yes.

Next, we are going to clear out your Internet cache and history.

1. Click on Tools from the top toolbar in Internet Explorer
2. Click on Internet Options/General Tab
3. Click on the Delete Files button within Temporary
Internet Files section
4. Click on the Clear History button within the History
section
5. Click OK
6. Close all Internet Explorer browser windows for the
changes to take affect.

Last, delete the contents c\program files\windowsupdate folder except
the iuhist.xml file that is located in the C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 folder.

Reboot your machine, then try the Windows Update site and see if you can
access the catalog.

Worked for me. Good luck - not sure if the files will be identical in 2k, but my guess is they will be ;).

Top notch effort as usual KJ - worked beautifully on win2k.

Deviant

I'm not going to tell those naughty people out there with illegitimate copies of Windows XP that what KJ has posted will also work for them. No that would be wrong and would only encourage those people to get the updates themselves. It would therefore not discourage the use of ripped coppies, and therefore Microsoft would lose out again. The secret will be safe with me and I will take it to my grave.
