Heheheheh... >$1000... hmmm, yes. Absolutely possible. You could probably get one for about $10,000 or greater still.

oh.. i see
Are there any inkjets around that price that could do just as good a job maybe? I'd be printing things like booklet covers, business cards, letterheads? for myself (portfolio) and to use for printing proofs for a guy so the quantity is small but the quality needs to be pretty decent and able to print at least 200grams
the below are not mine but an example of the type of stuff/quality i'd need to print like:

Do you even need to buy it yourself? Why not just take your files to a digital printing service and have them print them for you.

yeah, depending on the quantity then getting them done at a shop is an option, or a decent inkjet would probably be good enough, also I have read that the main benefit a cheap laser has over an inkjet is the cost per page, to get top quality printouts you will need to pay top dollar

the top end inkjet printers will give just as good print quality as a colour laser... even better in some cases (as some colour lasers aren't really all that good)..
as vaark pointed out the big advantage of a laser unit is long-term printing costs. the cost per page at least 1/4 of a typical inkjet, but that's probably not so much of an issue to you.
there are a few inkjets around the $1000 mark that should be able to do what you want... you'd do best to browse around a few showrooms and get someone to demonstrate them for you.

If you intend on using this for a business venture, for things like business cards etc, I would not recommend an Ink-jet. They can still run years after being printed if they get wet, so no use to a business person!
Colour digital printers cost an arm and a leg, and to be honest, you ARE kidding yourself. Your best bet would be to get someone else to do it, and ALWAYS choose a digital printer, they work out to be a fifth of the cost of an offset printer...
However, if its pretty much only for you and friends, go Ink!

yeah and to combat the "runs" problem you can always buy a laminater or get stuff UV cooked if need be.

You used to be able to get some Dye Sublimation printers at reasonable costs as well (cheaper than Laser but more than Ink-Jet) might pay to do some searches for dye-sub also.

I am looking at a B&W laser. This will suffice for work stuff and when i need colour i'll take it to a friends printing house.
If anyone has info or suggestions on a good B&W laser fire away.
I'm looking at these currently:
Canon LBP-810 (http://www.canon.co.nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp810.html) / 600 DPI / 8PPM / $461 inc GST @ dragonpc
Canon LBP-1120 (http://www.canon.co.nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp1120.html) / 600dpi / 10PPM $? can't find this selling anywhere in NZ but it looks perfect for my needs.
Couldn't care less about how fast (PPM) it is. Just want something that can put out a reasonable quality print (can't expect much for this price i guess) and be reliable. Also cheap to refill and able to handle biggish Freehand files.
