Has anybody removed the heatspreader on a tualatin or know of anybody that has??

I read an article on it ages ago but can no longer find any links and googl has turned up nothing after hours of searching.

I need to do this cos the heatspreader i have is (to quote SP) more concave than a wok!! and the bugger is made out of some kinda metal that is highly resistant to lapping

I think you can bung the chip in the freezer and the spreader will shrink pretty quick. After 5 mins a quick twist with a putty knife could get rid of it.

Comments, flames?

Thats the problem, The glue is rubberey so it should go brittle and the steel wil shrink but there is no way of getting a blade under the bugger,. I have tried pretty hard.

I remember an article on removing the heatspreader from a k6-2/3. They just pit the spreader into a vise and squeezed and it bent and popped off:D

only article I've read on removing the heat spreader from a tualatin... the guy ****ed his core (or traces or something, didn't pay too much attention).

just had the chip in the freezer for 20 mins and remover the glue around the edges carefully so as not to damage the traces but the little prick wouldnt come off.
At least my temps have dropped 2-3 degres
