ok i think its about time i got around to getting a new CD writer
what i would like is :

1) Something around the 200$ mark (cheaper is better as i dont have that much money to spend)
2) A CDRW that can make exact copys of Cds (Backups)
3) Has Full Suport For Clone CD
4) Dose NOT Have copy write Protection
5) Reliable (not gonna die or get picky after a few 100 burns)

another question also..
at the moment i have a Philips 4x4x16 CDRW (PCA460)
what would be a fair asking price for this when i choose to sell it

I haven't seen much under $200 apart from probably the Samsung range (can't remember the speeds), I would have a look for you at some sites but I am downloaing 100mb on dial-up and can't be bothered slowing it a fraction to browse. I haven't really been looking mind you. I'd stay away from Samsung though & I'd make my price about $250.

I'll give you $100 for ya Philips .... hehe (serious btw :D)

Yeah, the only brands under $200 are Samsung, LG and BTC (rebranded SONY).

You could get a Diamond Data 24x10x40 for around the $200 mark tho.

But if you could possibly fork out another $47 or wait a bit longer then I think the Lite-On 24x10x40 from here: http://www.computerdirect.co.nz/ would be the best bet.

Are you drunk? :p It says Inc GST right after the product description.

Hell, Whetu even had INC GST in his post. ;)

DRUNK!!......... I wish hehe but I gotta work tomorrow.

Well I always get so excited about prices I forget about the gst, just making sure. Its also seemed too cheap to have gst included. That LG will probably putter out though. But I will probably buy on if I find a good enough review, as I have no money. Funny how you wanna save and you are but then comes along so many good deals, also hire purchase is the death of us all. :( :(

From what I've heard the LiteOn is a good drive and will meet all your requirements. As for how much you should get for your CDRW I would suggest ~$80-$100, although I could be off so get some more opinions.

Damn that LG is cheap.

*Voice screams in his head.... "You get what you pay for" ....runs off to do a google for reviews" :D

Aopen are great writers. They are rebadged Ricoh and I've heard Ricoh are one of the best, they were one of the first companies to release cdwr to the public as well.

I got the Aopen 24x, really fast,
you can sell your old one for about 100-120$ on trademe.

The thing I love about the new CD Writers is the buffer underun technology, and they are so fast, well worth it.

I don't use mine often, but still have it cause you need it everynow and then.

That CDRW of Styles is very good, and has a very good price.

When it comes to CDRW revews you must check out http://www.cdrinfo.com. The 24x Lite-On can do perfect SafeDisc2 back-ups. It can be had for ~$200.

I've got a 8x BTC and that works fine, although I sure do like the price of that LG, or the BTC 40x at Styles.

Just remember that once you get above 24x the difference in write times doesn't differ all that greatly.

Waiting on info from brother one a place. So still a couple/few weeks.
As for the LG - it's $145incl gst. *If* anything goes wrong, just give me an email (it will be listed on the site link when up) and we could work out something easy enough :)

I have a LG 16x CDRW and it's doing fine for me.

It has got a good review at THG (http://www4.tomshardware.com/storage/02q2/020411/index.html) ...which is keeping to the OC tradition :D

I assume the 24x LG will be better having a 8MB buffer and all.

The LG and LiteOn CDRW's also get a good rating on the Blind Write (http://www2.blindread.com/view_topxunit.php?viewtype=writer&nbr=10) website if you are looking at doing those 'perfect' copies.

I too am looking for a new CDRW myself. I I like the sound of the liteon and Aopen. I'll decide one way or another. But a question.. what burning software do these and other drives come with. Very seldom is the software advertised with the package. I'd like one with a proper copy of Nero as I've been using it for a while.
Does an OEM drive come with no software?

Humantuckshop

OEM drives do usually come with a burning utility, alot of the time it is NERO - but makers like HP tend to include their own utility.

just looking at the cd-rw selection over at styles.com and i think after i get my new system and recover from the huge hole it has left in my pocket i may upgrade my current cd-rw... i have a hp at the moment .. it's slow and really noisy which i cannot stand although i have found this can also depend somewhat on the media used.. but anyway are these aopen, lg and liteon cd-rw drives quiet? this is really important to me... i mean they are all fast.... :)

Folks the two best (in popular opinion) burners on the market are Lite-On and Asus. They are both capable of burning backups of the most stubborn of copy-protections; laser-lock, safedisc V2, securom, etc. The Lite-On is usually hailed more because of a better price-performance ratio, however, I have seen the Asus steal the thunder in some tasks such as reading lasr-lock CD's, and I think may actually be a slightly more aggressive(and thus more accurate) writer. I hope that helps, but it's just my $0.02.
P.S. for those wondering, I own a 32X Lite-On. I actually considered the Asus, but the Lite-On was more readily available in the faster speed.

Anyone heard any thing about MSI CD-ReWriters?

I can get a 40x12x48 for $129 +gst

or a Aopen 40x12x48 for $139+gst

bot I'm thinking the Aopen, though MSI video cards are good as long as you arent overclocking them. BTW anyone got an 8x speed HP writer, cause I know how to overclock it to 12x, and this goes with some other brands and speeds as well.

At the wholesalers, but I missed again on this shipment, so next ones on friday, and I have pre ordered.

No doubt MSI flavour will be in the shops soon.
