Ok firstly I appologize if it seems that I am rehashing the Linux vs Windows debate. But that is not my intention. To quote Deviant...

your just lucky there is no clear linux vs windows thread. You could have the joy of watching the many generally uninformed supporters of either camp make incorrect assmptions or comments about the other opearing system.

Now my only goal is to point those interested in GPL and Linux to some interesting reading. The reason I am posting these links is because I didn't see the points made in them put foward by any of the Linux "camp". Please don't flame me or stick a particularly large UT weapon up my bottom (wonders if bottom is on the list... lol).
BTW I would be equally happy if someone did this for Windows (If posssible), or also added quality Links that I don't yet know about.

The first I put foward is to refute some of the points put foward by KJ, not because Linux rules and Windows sux. But because I think they were fundementally wrong. And that point was put foward in the Linux Gaming (http://forums.overclockers.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=157&perpage=15&pagenumber=3) thead. That point being that Linux (I got the impression nor GPL) could succeed because there was no Software Configuration Management. The Link is to the Halloween Files (http://www.opensource.org/halloween/index.html). I expect some of you have read them if not they are well worth it. What they are is an internal memo Microsoft did on GPL with particular attention to Linux. And it's threat on Microsofts bussiness (monopoly?).

The second Link is to The Cathedral and the Bazaar (http://tuxedo.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/) written by a dude named Eric Raymond (http://tuxedo.org/~esr/). Again it's been around for a while and am just posting it for those who aren't familiar with it.

Just incase you think because the Halloween files are from 1998 that they are somewho erralivent I would next like to drect you attention to a speech (http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/speeches/2002/04-17glc.asp) made this year by Bill Gates himself at the GLC (Government Leaders Conference).
And finally I would point you to pick up the latest copy of PC World mag. Now before you think the writer of "Back to the bronze age" article Geoff Palmer is just another Linux fr33k I'd like to point out on his behalf that he has been a windows user all of his working life, That is until late last year when he was asked for PC World to do an article on Linux and went cold turkey from windows for a month.

Now I know there are a thousand and one other links for GPL and especially against Microsoft. But my point of doing this was just to briefly show those who were interested (with my limited knowledge) that GPL can work and is, and most importantly Microsoft have been, are and will continue to be (if allowed) a monopolist company. But lastly on that point no one can relly blame them as it is the unwritten unspoken goal of every company, and it's not like they have been subtle about there intentions.

Thoughts comments. Constructive though please, I'm a Linux n00b trying to learn.

Sorry :(
Isn't that the way something of that size is supposed to be done.

As for being a n00b. Tell me about it. Reminds me of when my folks first got a 386 and because I was always on it they assumed (wrongly) that I knew what I was doing so I had to learn fast... *DOS flashbacks*

What an ironic start, I think I posted that text. :p Or at least I think I did, hmm maybe i'm thinking i did things which i didn't again (or holucionating), but I can't be bothered reading the older threads... hmm its got painfully obvious spelling mistakes like I make (I usually notice but are usualy too lazy to proof read my message until after I've posted it, at which time I can't be bothered editing it).... ahh well who cares

If it helps I didn't notice:D
BTW the quote is from your last post on the "Best OS" thread.

ohhhhhhhhhh kay... so your saying that if the windows application support under linux was better, linux itself would be better?

almost like saying (I know you didn't, but might as well have, based on other posts). "If linux has better windows application support, I wouldn't have to use windows". Donno, something about that sentence seems strange to me :p

Also, for anyone that wants to evulate other operating systems, or even setup a test enviorment where you can screw with things and not worry about it affecting your main enviroment, I HIGHLY recommend VMWare. You could install a linux virtual machine while still running under windows (or the other way if you prefer). Things run a little slower in the virtual machine, especially graphics - but if you just want the conveience of being able to try different things without fear, its worth it.

Forget emulating Windows, all the most popular online games have Linux ports, and a lot of the new ones are official!
More and more games are going to be ported to Linux as it becomes more popular.

But, Wine's the best option at the moment.

Mmmmmm... I'd better find the time to install Red Hat later on...
Better have a partition tool...
