Had a chat with Intel today..

2.6Ghz Xeons will be here in 3 mnths.

Tentative timescale for P4 3Ghz maybe sept-dec timeframe.. not sure - didn't really ask for a real date. My guess tho is probably jan-march segment.

AGP 8X in NZ - about 6 months time.

boards with E7500 and 860 chipsets are available. SuperMicro unit got a thumbs up.

Matrox Parhelia - Matrox have gone a bit quiet on this one. Board is supposed to be AGP 8x, but is backwards compatible to 4x.. Will probably arrive same time as 8x boards. Will work well on the 860 chipset.

3GIO - forget about it.. I asked if there will be any likely release soon. The response was - it [the standard] is still under IEEE review. No manufacturer will volume produce something in this state.. My response was - so I should look at it again in 2 years.. The response to that was ... goood idea.

On the otherhand, it will be likely that 3GIO 1x slots will appear on boards when it is finally ratified. This will replace one of the PCI slots most likely. This was only speculation.

I didn't get a confirmation on what will come after AGP 8x. PCI-X sounds like a contender.. Maybe 3GIO 1x.. would be interesting to get a confirmation on that one.

I was under the impression that 3GIO (now renamed PCI-express) had been approved, due to the fact that the main player PCI-SIG had decided to adopt it (and change the name). nVidia have also wayed (sp?) in behind it as the successor to AGP. Roll out is expected in the second half of 2003. One of the things they are also looking at initially is a slocket type device in order to enable backwards compatability with PCI cards etc.
BTW My source is an article in Atomic magazine issue 17. If any points are wrong feel free to correct me.
