Ok so like I use The Playa, which comes bundled with the DivX codecs, but I find if the movie has some graphic "tearing" or corruption then The Playa freezes and throws up a lovely windows error box.
I also use Power DivX, but find that I can't fast forward without the sound getting all out of sync.
I've tried GDivX player, but couldn't get it to play the movie in 4:3 ratio, coz I hate watching in widescreen.
Anyone have any other suggestions ?

microDVD 1.2 ... unfortunately it's gone commercial so future releases won't be free but it's still the best available IMO. it's interface takes a bit of getting used to - it's mainly hotkey based - but it's very easy to use once you remember what key does what.
the main reason i use it is it's pan and scan features... no other DiVX player i've tried has pan and scan that actually works properly (i.e. without distorting the image).
you can download it off www.divx-digest.com i think...

MPlayer :D:D

The BEST linux movie player available. Takes practically no cpu time compared to windows players. Heck, you can even play the movie in a console ;)
It is a full player for practically every codec. DivX, XviD, Ogg, MP3, etc... even plays DVD.

have you tried changing the CPU Options of Da Playa or the DivX 5 codec itself?
that might help....
i tend to use WMP 7.1.....or Da Playa if i feel like it...

Yeah I've played with all the options, but it's only when the actual rip is bad, ie. actual graphic "tearing" due to a poor rip etc that The Playa goes tits up.
I would use WMP but for the fact it doesn't have an option for changing the aspect ratio to 4:3....does it ?

The best media player replacement is Zoom Player.

This is really good and you won't go back to wmp once you've used it
