hey.
There is this copy of Windows NT4 fosale real cheap and i was wondering if it can be used just like Windows98. So what im asking is, can it be used on a normal home computer?
Thanks in advance.

Edit> While im at it, can Linux Redhat 8.0 be used like Windows98? What about Mandrake 9.0?

to be honest i wouldn't bother with nt4, there's no really a lot of driver support out there for it,... but that said if you wanna run your computer 24/7 it will be a lot more stable....

(and to answer your question yes it can be installed in a home computer). but it really ain't designed for it if you're wanting to play games etc....

mandrake 9 and red hat 8.... well, i don't have mandrake 9, but installing 8.2 on another computer seemed to root it.... but a lot of other people seem to like it.... me, well, i've had various versions of red hat installed on my computer, and i have been trying 8 lately.... it's quite cool.... everything is much better integrated than before.... feels more complete, like *god forbid* windows!

but as before, if you're just wanting to play games etc then stick with win 98... pretty good (if you have the second edition), but not as good for coding ;-)

Thanks for the replys guys...
The computer im gonna use it in isnt a gaming computer.... more like a homework computer (and a net surfing comp). The hardware is getting a bit out dated now, so i shouldnt have any trouble with not having any drivers for new hardware.
So i should just ditch the NT4 & Mandrake ideas and gofor Redhat?

Oh, and im already running Windows98SE, and im sick of using Windows98 and i wanna try something different (my mums PC also has 98SE installed).

if it's an older computer i'd keep using 98se....

but if you're keen to try something else then try dual booting 98se and redhat or mandrake (i prefer red hat...) the only prob is that things like the newer versions of windows / red hat / madrake is that they're pretty resource intensive... you generally need a pretty new computer to run them without wanting to hit something!

(and then, well sometimes even a new comp won't help!)

Grrr!!

NT4 is really Windows 95 that is very stable, but has no games support, and very little driver support.

I'd say W2K or 98SE.

Red hat 8 looks nice :) haven't used it though.
Also NT4 is not plug and play which can sometimes cause problems if you dont know what to sort out I/O and IRQ conflicts.

NT4 is a good OS, make sure you get the latest service pack, like at least SP6,
I have used NT4 and found it great cause it was so stable, ran faster than 98 on an old computer, and supported all my appz like office, ie etc. I don't see anything wrong with it,
if you wan't old, get nt3.51, now that's old,
