if anyone can solve this problem , they can have my... *looks around room for something of little value* 286-12mhz cpu :p
when using any direct3d game (unreal and cs in opengl are file), i get really weird stuff happening, the sims has big pretty flashing triangles, and gta3 and a few other games look like doom with noclipping on when you walk into a wall, everythings all messed up.
when using the standard windows drivers (no dets) gta3 runs fine, but is painfully slow.
i have a gf2mx with win xp
this is what i have tried
installing dx 8.1
installing new and old detonators, and using standard windows drivers
new 4in1's
installing that strange hotfix from the gta3 thread
help!

Was everything working fine before? Did you have this problem before installing the DX beta fix needed for GTAIII?
If you've been installing lots of various drivers there is probably all sorts of left over files and crap that could be conflicting...
First off..
I don't run XP so I can't give you specifics but in 2k when you open up the good ole device manager which list all your hardware, you have view menu with the option to show all hidden devices.
I'm pretty sure its still there in XP...
You might find multiple entries for your video card... if so remove/ uninstall them all.
Restart and then Install the 28.32 Det's....
Goto the start menu > run ... type in: dxdiag
Goto the display tab and run the tests on the right... what happens?

I've found occasional problems with the GF2 MX.
Best settings I've found so far are:
In BIOS,
disable fast writes,
disable all video caching and shadowing,
enable assign IRQ for VGA,
set AGP aperture to twice the size of the video RAM.
In windows:
Run at 1280x1024 max res, 16bit colour.
Try 32 bit colour to see if it changes anything.

Format the XP partition and reinstall. If that doesn't solve the problem - buy a new computer.

Strange problem...Try 21.83 detonator or go back to standard XP driver with 16 bit colour at a lower resolution.
What other hardware do you have?

Did you try the direct X diagnostic utility ..?
What was the result?
Also you probably want to try the vid card in another system to rule out it being stuffed...

it works fine with the standard windows drivers, VERY VERY slow though. opengl still works so hopefully the card is ok (although i ran it for a few days with a dead crystal orb once :( )
cant really be bothered with xp anymore, this combined with some other things is really starting to irritate me.
anyone got a spare copy of 2k?

the dxdiag comes up with a really wasted cube with flashing colours for the dx7 test, nothing for the dx8 test, and same as 7 for the 9 test.
i might chuck 98 on an old hdd and give that a go.
edit : fresh install of me gets exactly the same thing
time to swap vid cards
edit: same thing happens with a new vid card as well, my original card works fine in another pc
whats left to try ffs?

If you're getting the same problem with a new vid card, and the original card is fine in another PC.. it's definately a problem with drivers or DX itself...
I'd try one more fresh install of winXP, installing stuff in the following order, restarting after each...
1) The OS..WinXP
2) windows updates (but not DirectX)
3) Latest Via 4in1's from www.viaarena.com
4) Video card drivers (use the 21.83's if you can)
5) Monitor Drivers if you have them
Direct X is included in XP so you don't need to install it
Don't install the beta fix or any other beta stuff that you need to play GTA III yet... try to get your machine successfully completing the dxdiag tests first..
One other thing to consider is that your OS installation files could be damaged in some way? .. eg: scratches on the cd, corrupt file or two if installing from a hard drive.
Let us know how it goes... there are always more things to try..

update time. i tried doing a reinstall of xp, it complained of corrupted files while installing and kept randomly resetting.
then it wouldent post for a while (i had to power on/off about 4 or 5 times)
installed win98 to try an upgrade, and every single program when loaded crashed (including the xp setup). now it just comes up with windows protection error and refuses to boot at all
it must be the mobo or psu, surely??
(both are still under warranty :) )

try reseating your RAM, checking your power connectors, loading BIOS defaults, underclock some, and see how you go... i'm thinking it could be a PSU problem.

I think it has something to do with fogging or something. I remember seeing similiar shots of Sacrifice that had similiar problems... try disabling features of some sort?

Right now it could be anything in your system... cpu, mobo, HD, psu that's causing the prob...
First thing I'd do is carefully take your whole system apart.. I mean everything.. take the mobo out of the case, ram out of the mobo etc.. reset the cmos via the jumper, take the battery out for a couple of hours...
Then carefully put everything back together making sure everything is tight and correct. Cables are in properly.. etc. Make sure the mobo isn't grounding itself on the case in some way..
Once you've got everything back together, set up the bios to defaults...
Then try installing again..
If you're still getting the same problem you need to take the scientific method of ruling out a problem with each part individually.. eg try your cpu in another system.. try your HD in another system... try your vid card ... etc
Your profile says you're in hamiton ... there's bound to be a friendly helpful OCNZ geek in your area who can help you out with some troubleshooting and with testing some of your parts in their system...
