*random thread*

Here's a couple o piccys of the flat's server closet.

From the top, the monitor and keyboard that are used on occasion, they are hooked up to either the server or the smoothwall box for whatever reason...

Then we have a 24port Bay Networks Rack-Mountable 10mbit switch, courtesy of mr SilverPriest.

Moving down we can see the bluebox, that is the Smoothie, running a P166mmx @ 280MHz (w00t for asus mobos!) with 64meg o ram and a 2gig seagate hdd.

In the beercrate is the flat domain server, does domain tasks, dhcp, all the authentication etc and also serves common install files on networked drives. It's another Asus mobo with a celery 450 and 256meg of ram, running NT4 Server. It has a 2gig and a 4gig seagate drives installed.

dont tell the landlord about this though ;) yours truely went crawling under the house feeding cables all over the place so that we each have a jackpoint in each room... nice and tidy that way

Thats one big-ass switch. Have you ever pulled it apart to see whats inside it? Like, is it mostly empty space or all heatsinks?

I want your server case. It has good airflow, is easy to carry to LANs, its even got that nice wood look to it. Serious modding potential there. ;) :D

Yes I've been inside it.. you see, to keep it cold the manufacturers installed a pair of 92mm fans.. fine and dandy right.. ok.. the fans are made by delta electronics.. nuff said.

a couple of resistors and they are down to 8v and still pushing a SHEZAAAAATLOAD of air :D The switch used to reside in my bedroom.. I cut back a WHOLE lot of noise when i moved all the server gear into the closet.. mainly older HDD motor whine in there these days though...

It is mainly unused space... just space for expansion modules (eg more ports) a largish mobo section and a psu section

My network is even more of a waste.

2 machines and a router ( soon to be 3 machines and a router once I get an old socket-A mobo and RAM (http://forums.overclockers.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3032) ;) ;) ).

...on a 16-port 100Mb switch. With a 32-port 100Mb switch in reserve. Heh - SerN must have a similar setup with his 32 as well.... :D

Still, even that won't come CLOSE to comparing to Warp's setup if we ever get the prototype AT gear working for LANs!! ( I'm talking 300+ 100Mb ports all at full speed to one p[H]at-ass backbone )

BTW - and NO CISCO GEAR!! Mwhahahahaaaa....
( students, cant afford  )

KJ is right about big switches...

I have been working with mirage for a while on this and i think it goes on the equinox site sometime next week.

For equinox there will be

http://www.at-nz.co.nz/products/images/Switchblade3.jpg

and 32 * 24 port 8000 series switches with a 2 * 1000Mbit uplink per switch

Please see for more info.

Awww dang, now I gotta go :D....

BTW, are you using a chasis that's half-empty, or is that picture 'indicative only'?

*drools profusely*

You'll only get what, 384 or so 100Mb ports off a full chasis? So are you using TWO? OMG, what sort of monstor-mofo backbone would that need?  10G?

*drools profusely*

Or are you using a chassis as a backbone, full of 1G blades linked out to the *cough* smaller *cough* switches? Mmmm - oooo, that would have so many purty LED's.... :p Man, blades AND claymores? So is this the ub3r-AT-smackdown or something? :D

Excuse me... I think I have to go spit....

The switch info is avalible on the site

http://www.at-nz.co.nz/products/switchblade.html

The Switchblade 4008
Slots 8
Maximum Gbit ports 64
Maximum 10/100 ports 384
Non blocking Throughput 128 Gbit per sec
Routed/Switching Capacity 96 Mpps
Height 15U
Wirespeed Layer 2 Yes
Wirespeed Layer 3/4+ Yes

The Switchblade 4004
is basicly half of the above values.
http://www.at-nz.co.nz/products/images/switchblade_4_slot.jpg

I cant say how much the switch is worth becuase it is on a project by project basis.

The switchblade is going at least 32-40 Gig ports for all the "desktop" switches to connect into.
It will have one blade with a 48port card for the servers to plug in.
The desktop switches has 24 * 10/100 port and 2 * gig ports.
1 is to link into the switchblade the other is doing nothing.

The "desktop" switches are very fast and can forward packets at 6.5Mpps with a 9.6 gig backplane.

The total for the network is 32 * 2 * 1Gbit + 9.6 * 32 = around 284 Gbit of non blocking throughput...

There is a claymore etc and there as spares.

The switchblade was designed in chch and is a impressive box not only is speed but in features.
But now i sound like a sales man so i will go play with a claymore and some switches and learn more about network classifiers etc... :)

Cheers,
Techie

Thats what I thought. First of all assumed it was a rack with a sound proof cage. But it does look like a cab.

Not sure who you're talking to here... if of course you are talking to me I was implying cabinet when I said the word "rack" eg "rack cabinet". If I say rack, that's what I mean. I dont use the term rack to describe any equipment that would go into the cabinet... I wouldnt call a "cable management bar" a "rack." As for the cases, they're "rack cases." Rack shelves, rackmountable wopbopaloobop.. the list goes on.

A rack is something you use to hold or store things with ("A framework or stand in or on which to hold, hang, or display various articles" -Dictionary.com)eg shoe rack, milk rack (boobies!), cd rack etc etc so technically I was right

Now follow me on this one... you could use a rack to hold/hang/display equipment and cables could you not? Therefore, whether or not it's an open rack (what I think you're thinking of) or a rack cabinet is irrelevant. They're both racks, and both usages of the term are correct.

To continue this diatribe on what Sledgy said, "server cabinet" is too specific. This rack cabinet doesnt have to be used exclusively for server equipment. Right now it's mostly taken up by network switches and cable management.. therefore if anything it's a "telecommunications/data equipment rack cabinet" BUT it could also be used for music equipment. Would that still make it a "server cabinet"?

Nope. It's a rack cabinet, or "rack" for short.

Me? Pedantic? Noooooooo never ;)

Sanchez.. just a standard sparcstation 5 afaik.. the monitor was really nice.. pity it was only used for cli...

thanks for the ego stroking, but it's not mine.. it's Redevil's linux server. The sun box is an SQL server and we had the two dishing up a website. Now that said website is hosted by kiwihosting (w00t gremlin!) there's no need for the linux and sun boxes to sit there, so redevil has taken them back to play with...
