Does any body else get these sort of pings? Every time I play UT or something with my buddies from back in the States, I get 200-300 ms pings, which actually I expected, but when I found out why I got really pissed off! The ping jumps 140 ms b4 it even LEAVES NEW ZEALAND!!!!!! As a matter of fact, it only increases by >10 ms from her to California!!!!!!!(see pic) So I guess the real question I'm asking is: Is everyone else getting this? because it looks to me like the company responsible for routing int'l traffic out of New Zealand is HOARDING any profits and leaving their servers generations behind so we can all think that kicka$$ nternet service in New Zealand is something of a fantasy. Or is it just that Xtra sucks that damn bad and this will go away when I switch to Inspire?

yeh, welcome to the horrors of NZ internet.....
Those last few hops with the NZ domain are probably over in the states at the end of the southern cross cable. VisualRoute probably just assumes theyre located in NZ because of the .nz domain.

I've been doing my homework all morning, and, the servers that say "global-gateway.net.nz" appear to be in Australia and Hawaii, respectively, but that still doesn't explain such a high ping from here to Australia, and such a low ping from Australia to California. That's just nutty, my brain cannot process such fallacy.
*EDIT* I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!!! GUESS WHO THE OFFENDER IS!? A COMPANY WHO LOVES TO REAP PROFITS AND NOT REINVEST THEM! THE COMPANY WHO "CLAIMS" YOU PAY SUCH HIGH PRICES FOR BROADBAND BECAUSE THEY NEED TO REINVEST IT IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE! PROOF THAT THEY DON'T! THIS COMPANY IS JUST STRINGING YOU ALL ALONG!!! I KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE 2 RELATIVES THAT WORK FOR THEM! THEIR SERVERS ARE OVERLOADED BECAUSE OF A HIGH VOLUME OF TRAFFIC THAT THEY CANNOT HANDLE BECAUSE THE COMPANY THAT THINKS YOU SHOULD PAY TO HAVE FASTER INTERNET BUT DOWNLOAD LESS WILL NOT REINVEST THEIR PROFITS!!!!
Here's my proof:

LOL man, we've known Telecom sucks for a long time. Telecom are the ONE reason for about every telecommunications problem we get. For example, I lose my net connection ( *cough* 'always on' *cough* DSL ) on average 1 or 2 times A DAY. Why? Oh, cos Telecom just changed my IP.... again.....

We'd all be using other companies if we could, but alas - they own the entire phone line network and about everything else important. Stupid government loosing full control over telecommunications ( should have just been an SOE )....

4 words:

They get it worse :(. Yes, it IS physically possible - their telco's are actually WORSE! I know it's a shock, but most kiwi's find that one out the hard way. IE: we go onto an Aussie forum to b*tch about Telecom, and come away feeling kinda spoilt....

just couldn't resist writing in a thread how much telecom suck!
a friend who manages a company had a $2000 DSL router fry because of a voltage spike (for that price you'd think theyd have a protector built in) and telecom didn't want to know about it.

for those of you *****ing about telecom.. deal with telstrasaturn...
1) my butcher predecessor used to contract for them, he said it wasnt uncommon for a customer to wait 3 weeks to get the required attention, regardless of job priority.
2) they are horribly understaffed
2.5) they are still firing employees
3) their customer service could be beaten by a bunch of gagged down-syndrome sufferers, and i'm not joking.
4) at my previous flat, it took them 2 weeks and 3 days to get a contractor around to hook up the second phoneline. On telecom you can expect a wait of 2-3 days tops.
5) at my current flat, we were looking at going with telstrasaturn lines (already in the house) and getting tempest256k. TS refused to acknowledge the existence of TS lines in the house, we had to go through the previous tenants bills to prove them wrong. After that they refused to budge from a two week wait. the result? we told them to sod off and telecom hooked us up yesterday. THAT IS HOW A REAL TELCO WORKS. Inspire will soon have some new customers.
6) legend tells of proof of their lack of redundancy. Some of their backbone line is exposed as it runs up the kapiti coast. one day a hick farmer was shooting at random crap (magpies?) and hit the backbone cable. their network was knocked out. on telecom all the users wouldnt know the better as it would automatically be rerouted transparently.
until the competition sorts out their sh*t, like it or not, telecom is the best.

Yeah, well, welcome to New Zealand.
Im with Xtra Jetstart (or whatever they call it now) and I find it pretty good, very little downtime at all.

I'm not sure I know how to respond. Do I have to suck it up and stick with my Xtra Jetstart? You bet. And I will. The fact that there is no competition and Telecom is the lesser of two evils doesn't mean I'm going to shut up and be a good robot either. Sure, Telstra obviously sucks a$$, but Telecom sucks a$$, too. They just happen to look better because of Telstra, but I'm still a PAYING customer of Telecom, and will continue to let let them know that until the DSL in my house is SO FAST it downloads a program for me before I even click 'save'. I'm the one lining their pockets and I am watching their progress.

So in summary...
NZ dsl = su><
Aus dsl = su><0r
Korean dsl = r0><0r (sp?)
From what I know of the situation over there. They have the highest rate of dsl per capita in the world. This is partly due to the fact the apartment buildings over there are all wired up as LANs. This also has the benefit of making it cheap. And yes just maybe their teleco don't suck.
In conclusion.... Lets all move there :D
*See's headlines now*
Cause of South Koreas loss of national broadband strength found.
It was discovered today that the cause behind the substantial drop in South Koreas broadband strength was not due to the Nations telecos.
The culprets were in fact discovered to be a bunch or young expatriate New Zealanders calling themselves OCNZ.
These geeks had occupied an apartment block right next to Korea national backbone.
As they were taken away eye witnesses said they were all grining like school boys who had just got away with peaking in the girls changing room.
The eye witnesses also told us that these self proclaimed OverClockers were babling about 5Mbps downloads and 25ms intenational pings.
Authorities have yet to disclose just how it was possible for these inderviduals to wh0re so much bandwidth. :D  :D

Saturn used to be the shiz, now its been raped and spit on panda-style by Telstra.
Telecom are a bunch of crude female genitals, and I hate them forever, even though they let me get JetStart, but the CFG's made me wait for three frigging weeks :/
Anyway, I was SO not going Xtra, I wanted to keep my Paradise email addresses, so I stayed, and they were fantastic...their helpdesk tends to be extremely busy, and not helpful (I think they play some games, and take 'Helpdesk' breaks ;) )
If my friend from Paradise helpdesk is reading this, I mean the others, not you, you're cool, and I love you, and I know every time you say 'it must be your hardware, go back to the manufacturer' you dont really mean it.
Paradise kicks ass for speed, my only DSL issues have been buying a crap cheap modem, and finding out if you dont install the right drivers first time, you will only ever be able to get rid of them by reinstalling windows from scratch. As it is, every time I reset, I have to reinstall the drivers, and fool windows into thinking they are new by renaming the directory they are in to something different each reboot.
No, its not in registry. Thank you. :)
I will be reinstalling windows sometime next week by the sounds of it...thank you for semi-reading this...Paradise IS a part of TelstraClearSaturnVodaphoneClearInternetIHUGJesusT elecom blah, but its fvcking good quality for $30.

Yes, the ISP might be rox0r, but their webpage sucks.
Paradise spent lots of money and a bit of time on a pretty Flash site. IHUG, for all their money, still made a shizzy busy page, as did Xtra, then again, Xtras page is for Internet retards (parents etc)
Oh god, thats depressing...my children will be talking about stuff in the future, refering to ME as a retard parent guy with NO TASTE and no idea about their life, and how Linkin Park (or latest craze) is the only one that understands them etc....

So what exactly is the definition of national and international traffic with regards to JetStart. Would these forums be national because of the .co.nz or internatioanl cos of where they are hosted. What about places like JSR.

I would assume that international traffic is anything which has to travel thorugh the international gateway, So that includes anything with .*.nz which is hosted overseas. Although having said that, the uni firewall doesn't recognise ocnz as being overseas, but it does other .nz sites...

What would happen if you were to put all your traffic through a NZ based proxy server. Would that mean that all data was national traffic?
varkk
07-06-2002, 08:06 PM
I would guess then that to the user then it would appear to be nz, as your computer would 'see' the proxy. But the proxy server would still have to pay for the transfers into the country

I was just thinking that say Xtra is your ISP. You then use a different ISPs proxy server. But I spose that Xtra would still know that it is international traffic somehow.
