just thought i'd break the ice with first thread :)
i came across a computer advertisement in the paper, for a company, and it had a 1Ghz Duron with 128mb and it had ideal for XP.
what do guys reckon would be minimum for reasonable operation on XP.

256 minimum
i wouldnt run with less than 384, 512 being ideal
I'm running win2k with 768, soon to be 512 as 256 going in other pc....

It would run fine on 128 with all the advanced features turned off and a lot of the bloat cut out but 256 would be a more realistic minimum.

got it running on 64meg on a K62 350 at work
slow as a dog even with all the flash stuff turned off
i would say 512 would be a good sweet spot

Yeah - 256 minimum in my books too. The machine down the hall has only got 128MB in it - but it's running ME, so it runs fine. ( although in that case I just can't be bothered suggesting another $200+ fork-out for an XP upgrade )
512MB is good - that's what I'm running ATM. I had 768MB of SDR before going DDR, but 512MB is very, very rarely a problem for me - so I just saved my cash and went 512MB.

we managed to get 2k running fine on a K6-2 450 with 196Mb RAM. I wouldnt even TRY that with XP, since its more bloated.....256Mb is standard for 2k, but i'm definatly gonna up it to 512Mb not long after i finish my upgrade.

with the k6-2's the l2 cache comes into it big time... on my old k6-2 i got a HUGE performance increase under 2k by haxing the registry to use the l2 cache (it doesnt by default) that k6-2 at present has 192 meg of ram and runs xp fine with some of the eye candy turned off...
*shrugs*
for me however, 256 is irritating... i'm used to stability and responsiveness.. 384 is a realistic minimum for me, 512 is a sweet spot :)
*laffs as the gf's comp only has 32meg*

yeah that's pure BS. it will run on 128MB it's certainly NOT ideal. honestly, they could be had up for false advertising with that claim.
you should post who it was and we'll flame them.

I agree it's misleading or false advertising, and I hate the way lots of advertisers do that. At least the commerce commission gets to nail some of them. Rather than flame them which will do nothing, report them instead which could hurt them in the pocket. That is if it worries you so.

yeah really true, let the commerce commission nail them

I find that 128MB in Win98 SE is bad enough. I wouldn't be wanting to try that out in XP. But then again this is teamed up with a celeron. :(

pfft try putting 128mb's of ram in XP, itll run OK, but try playing games such as RTCW,MOHAA etc etc on high detail, your game will be so choppy,

I've seen alot of Hewlett Packards and the like with Windoze XP & 128MB of RAM - most of the time it's with the cheapass Celeron packages tho. :(

I'm currently stuck with 128mb in XP, and it runs great, takes a while to get back out of games etc, and yes, with twice that there's pretty much no wait at all...
But in saying that, you need at least 256 for it to be manageable...I'm just reasonably patient.
In conclusion, the more RAM, the greater the penis/rewards.

i just upgraded from 256 to 512 (running win2k) and the difference is quite noticeable, although definately not as much as going from 128 - 256. sometimes i'm glad i have the ram tho.... :D

Retravision, well I would probably let them off the hook. They probably don't even know 128MB isn't ideal. I would also say that anyone going to Retravision for a computer is just asking to be ripped off, or get a dud.

hehe i had a GB of SDRAM on my old 900@1098 Athlon, but i sold it to get the DDR system upgrade :D
was a good time to sell it, i sold the 512's for 230 each, and considering its what i paid for them lol
i also got the 2 256 DDR's for 133 nz each :D the price had more than doubled, but a manager i know at noel lemmings down here had 2 in the cupboard purchased at the old price :D

I'm at 57.3MB swap file in 98se at the moment. That's just with THINK, MSN, Opera, Outpost and AVG.
That's 128MB ram but 8 shared for video and a celery 900.

I got 256MB XMS2400 at the mo. Runs XP ok, but a stick of 512MB XMS3200 would be better. ;) :D

I've been running XP for a while now, on my Celley 700 @ 789 with 208mb of crappy no name ram (hence the pathetic overclock) and it runs fine, well it did untill I started customizing my desktop with calendars, and weather forecasts etc.
IMHO 128Mb of ram is enough as long as you don't wanna run too many programs in the background.
Just my 0.02 cents
