No, I'm not selling you anything, I just wanted to get an idea. I get a more 'mature' feeling from you guys than I get over at Sharky, of course I could be completely off.
I'm 26, I just moved to NZ from the US(my wife is from here), and I'm looking for a job right now.

Hey welcome to our forum. Please leave now or you are likely to lose you sanity within the next two weeks.

This forum will suck up all your spare time, and will only end up in Divorce.

You wil find youself irresitibly drawn to buying computer components from Neo Computers, and spending all your money there.

On a side note, I'm 32, married 4.5 years, 2 kids, and work in the Royal New Zealand Hot Air Baloon Club, (formerlly Royal New Zealand Air Force). Mostly electronics trained and trying to get a Bachelor of Engineering.

this sounds like a dating show,

so, bachelor 1, what do you do at nights? well, hmm, .... I like to take long walks on the beach etc..

anyway, i just turned 18,
doing first year BE at AUT,
got my car this year too, drive to uni and back and give people rides on my restriceted, I live over at end of the North Western Mway.

Basically, my life consists of this:
winter, study for UNI,
summer, go down to the beach and surf and board etc, and of course work on my computer,

PPL say that I have no life, which is kindda true, but if my life is playing with computers, than I do a have a life, but society sees me as a spotty geek who loves his computer more than any other human being on the planet.

You have to be REALLY arrogant, dumber than a box of rocks, be willing to retire with a spot of skin cancer bigger than a starfish from all the JP8 and hydraulic fluid you spill on yourself, and if you don't get in serious trouble in the first 4 years, you get a 'good conduct' medal. Seriously. And, the pay does suck.

TESTIFY, BROTHA!! Lol - I wound up with over 4000 posts on the old OCNZ forums. :o Of course, that's as much due to my being a complete phr33k as it is to the OCNZ forums themselves, but nonetheless, they DO 0wnz j00.

We have a very high moderator/users ratio, so you'll be hard pressed to find a flame in here. Which changes everything - we actually manage to <RANT> on in religion/Linux/Mac threads for pages and pages and pages and nobody breaks anyone elses face :D.

Well, not a real face.... my face seems to be the most commonly broken/p[H]0t0ch0p3d image on the forums ATM  :p

....err, yeah - what was this thread about again?

/m3

I've just turned 20, and am in my 3rd full-time year at the University of Canterbury, studying towards a BSc. ( Majoring in Computer Science, but also studying Maths, Chemistry and Physics )

I also run around like a headless chicken. Err - no, I mean, do other stuff. Like Make weird clans ( [OCNZ] :D ;) ), run LANs ( L3 (http://www.L3.net.nz/) ), write the odd article ( got linked on [H]ard|OCP once, w00t! ), overclock the odd PC, and sneak in fast and buy ALL the good deals in the buy-sell section :D.

Oh yeah - and I write lots and lots of ridiculously long posts.... ph33er....

Beware. The next time you have your bangers and mash dinner or Spagehettietie (Christ damn that's a stupid freaking word) I've probably kicked, dropped, driven over or severily beaten that can or box that you got the food from.

Oh, Whetu, I even dropped a pallet of Tui the other day. (over $1-2000 worth of damage)

I hid for a while... cried.. contemplated suicide, the usual things.

BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BLACK! BLOOOOOOOOOOOO BLACK!

I feel SOME sort of semi-pride that I went there, even though I frigging hated school, still can feel like the fool for not concentrating when I should...

Life sucks, Foodstuffs sucks. But, The stupid dorks let me loose on a 5 or so tonne forklift.

hehehe, now its getting soggy outside, make sure you park that fat heavy sucker on the grass ;)

My friend was a computer tech upstairs, and the one time I visited there, someone had done such a thing, and the forklift was rather deep in the grass :D

Anyway, back to ME DAMNIT! 26, feeling like I am 36, looking like I am 16 (except for my pimp beard).
I have 3 sons, they are probably all going to be completely fvcked up mentally, due to the sense of humour my friends and I have, and most likely they will all be gay. Then again, I dont neglect them hugs and the love, but I mean, they just seem SO fruity! Is it normal for a 4 year old to tell you that they love EVERYTHING? He tells all my friends that he loves them, and most of the time they tend to cringe and smile nervously and make sure they are zipped up...

Anyway, I am semi-married, one day it will be proper etc...I work part time in a monitoring room, monitoring alarms, which sounds like a small-time job, but in saying that, I get to deal with peoples lives, and when you realise that, its shivery bottom/back area time.

Also, it sucks when one of the people you are calling the ambulance for dies...but then again, nothing compared to how much it would suck being that person, or the family...

The rest of my time is spent looking after my babies during the weekdays, as my partner works in a real job, making more than I do in an 18 hour week in one day...but thats the game of it all, isnt it. And of course, the network game days...saturdays I work from 11:30pm till 6:30am on sunday, sleep till lunch, get up and play netgames till early hours of monday morning with some other nerds...I really must get a computer ready for my partner, she always wants to nerd too, and there's always room for overclocking chicks ;)

[ends rant #5 for the night]

(If I have to edit this fvcking thing one more time, I'll format the internet again, goddamnit)

Well I am 26......and I build high powered drives (60-660 amp  ) for PDL electronics which involves a lot of screwing (of things together)

I also work with other people who like to screw (things up) and so I spend some of my day dealing with that to :p

My name is not fred and I have absolutely know idea who he is.

I'm not educated.. Wouldn't let me in to uni coz I was too stupid.

Am 33 and specialise in humongously stupendously large software development projects that cost at least 1billion, work in several countries and involve at least 30,000 people. When I am not overseas doing those, I come back here and do nothing.

Currently working for a company that believes it is the second largest in the world fixing the mistakes for another company that thinks its the 14th largest in the world..

This is of course the same as doing nothing.. Except getting paid for it.. Am about to give up doing nothing for someone else and get government funding for doing nothing for my self.

In ireland - nothing happened.. But they are working on it.. They havn't invented nothing here yet - which makes it a good place to come back to.. no-one will ask you to do anything.

I'm an 18 year old bum student at the University of Canterbury. I'm currently in my first year doing a BCom but that could change...I did finish that degree (miraculously), but it took 4 years. I still have no regrets about doing the degree, and after 3.5 years of working (that's not a terribly long career is it?) the student loan is well under 30k. I'm somewhat reluctant to pay it off while it's not accumulating interest and have only been making the minimum repayments!

I'm now living in Auckland and working as a Network Administrator / Systems Engineer. My responsibility and area of expertise is mainly around Novell and Linux platforms, but I look after Windows sites as well which is useful for keeping my fingers in the Microsoft pie.

I started doing a degree at CPIT when I was 17, left high school after 6th form, I think I made it roughly 8 months in to the degree, then got hired by a relatively well known software company in Christchurch.

I finished off all the papers I was doing but am yet to return and continue it. Can't complain though, I'm 19 now and have a lot of work experience + been through multiple promotions/pay rises.

When I first started at 17, I went from part time pizza hut pay to a full time salary, I thought I was so rich I couldn't believe it, looking back I now see they started me on the lowest minimum pay they possibly could (They have pay scales for each position), still, it was good money for a 17 year old :p

I wonder where I'll be in a few years time... Scary thought.

Though I think your prediction might be a little off. Maybe a little less prison and a little more drug ****ed/dead and a few wahs on the internets about how your life sucks inbetween.

To be fair 7 years will probably see Hori spend a significant chunk of that at Uni and a significant chuck flat on his back with bottle in hand, maybe a brief stint in court but probably a lot better off than yourself

I'm 29 and work for a Telco maintaining servers.

I really feel old.

If you don't mind me asking. How does one manage to get such a job ?

I did it the old fashioned way, started off in Level 1 support, moved into Level 2 Server Support, then onto Level 3. Moving from L1 to L2 usually involves specialist product knowledge, or the start of some technical certs. If you wanted to bust straight into L2, I'd say get some certs (RHCT/RHCE for Linux, MCITP for Wintel) and apply away. Helps if you are a geek as well.

L2 to L3 is the hardest step, you won't get there without maturity and an ability to work with projects, but the role is all about responsibility and being able to make judgement calls which the business hinges on, so you want a mature professional in the role.

Makes you wonder how I got to be L3... I may be a bit of a joker, but when it hits the fan I am a serious cookie.

Knowing where to apply is also a big thing, if you want to advance career wise then you probably want to work for a larger company with enterprise spec'd gear. Clusters of servers, dedicated network and server teams, etc. Else you end up as a sysadmin for a SME and never get a chance to advance your knowledge or work with the big toys.

Gen-I seems to be the place to look, especially with their dedicated teams being created, but there are a few others out there as well.

If you want to talk about it, PM me by all means, I'm more than happy to provide some career advice (career > job), if someone had done it for me then I'd be 2-3yrs ahead in the game I reckon.

How do I take advantage of first years? Initially I thought maybe it'd be more right by some moral framework to not, but now I'm getting more and more evidence to the contrary... that is to say I had principles but the realities of the world have all by exterminated my naive, romantic notions of good, and truth, and purity, etc etc... anyway that's not the point. How is this done?

Alcohol, surely...

Become a tutor. My biggest regret was not taking up the offer.. apparently this is easy meat.

As long as you don't stab them to death.

Actually, I did that, but I end up helping out instead of exploiting. Still doing it wrong.
