Is there a program that will let you set up like an internal P2P program for a LAN. So that when leeching freeware of other people, it won't be as much drain on everyone as the file will be getting grabbed from several places at once.

*stubbornly stands by FTP as the best file transfer method*
Most of my files are on CD anyway, so its not realy a worry......unless i dont burn all those 24/Farscape/SG1/Monty Python eps before L5/6
then everyone will be leeching off me anyway......
Swifty seems to be the P2P pro, so check with him...

LOL binky.

yes i'm a fan of p2p but if no one uses it then it doesn't work. simple. i was running a p2p system called eDonkey2000 at one stage. it worked but i wouldn't describe it as brilliant. i ran it for a week and then discovered that there was a grand total of 3 people using it and 98% of all files shared on it were shared by me.... so i shut it down :p.

AFAIK, http://www.edonkey2000.com/ is the only one that allows a local server. you run a small console based app on one computer and it becomes the server which the clients connect to to search other clients.

Cheers for that swiftynz, my mates trying it out now. He doesn't like perusing through Network Neighbourhood or using FTP.

oh ok well in THAT case i would use sharescan http://www.sharescan.net/

check both out, see which u prefer. sharescan just scans all windows shares and lists all files which you can then search through and download. it can resume downloads aswell :)

Me is the friend who wanted to know

edonkey2000 seems to work fine and would be good to share the lagg around a bit (me being the only person wh had a 1.7 gig prog at a LAN a while ago it would have been very usefull)

I was thinking that for future L3 events we, will have a dedicated file server. About 120GB of hard disk space on a relatively slowish machine (not used for gaming at all!). Will have probably two network cards to ease the flow or possibly more of the higher tech network cards [I heard after 3 realTek network cards, CPU consumption is too much and the computer just slows down]

Anyways, it will be cleared out after ever L3 lan, but some thing such as drivers yadda yadda will be kept on. And any other general freeware.

I think this is better since it would be easier for people to leech by putting it on this server, and then multiple people can get to it fairly easily.

Still in discussion though...

hmmmmmmm, then i could just yank out my 30Gb media drive and...no....wait...my comp currently will not boot without it for some reason........
anyway, nice idea...
we could use mine as something like that while i'm asleep....planning on getting a 60-80Gb to replace my 30Gb Media drive...
