DSE always have been highly priced their product, for a floopy drive that would cost you 48 dollars where you can get them for around 20 brand new! but one thing about DSE is that if they have them in stock, you can see it, and you can bring it home with you saving you waiting for your order to be arrive in your letter box...

dse works on name recognition (brings in potential customers), crappy components (cutting corners, such as with the hdd's - low input cost) and high retail price (max profit) to make sales...

john doe is going to walk into dse and see a ninja pc and think "woooo flash, dse is reputable i'll buy it!"

he'll only look at the MHz/GHz rating on the cpu, the size of the hdd and maybe how much ram is installed... he wont look at specifics like hdd speed/ brand/model, ram type/brand/model etc

and of course the assistant who'll talk to him will be an insolent cretin who doesnt know the difference between a keyboard and a telephone, so (s)he'll blunder his/her way through convincing the poor sucker to buy it

end of the day you can moan about how crap it is, but they'll be selling quite a few to unknowing people and making a tidy profit, so they'll continue doing so ;)

i fully agree with wheta, while i was in the shop buying compressed air, i overheard a convo between some guy and the sales person :D he mentioned that 'The GF2 MX400 series cards are close to best performance you'll ever get' lmao... i couldn't help grinning to myself :p

I don't know how much money there is in systems. When I used to work at DSE and sold HPs and that sort of stuff they made less then $50 for a machine that would retail for $2499. Maybe there's more in them now, but I doubt it.

And the staff there are payed about $1.20 an hour more then checkout chicks, thus some of them know about as much as the average deli assistant when it comes to info about the stock they sell.

Bleh - I feel obliged to provide an alternate POV about DSE sometimes. I had some good times there, and always tried to help people.

Your English was responsible for killing Jesus.

Also you have no idea what you're talking about, I have had plenty of good experiences with computer and non-computer related products, from dozens of different stores. Only a few instances where the staff havent been able to help me, generally with electronic component knowledge.

If I were to judge you, I'd say that the computer deaths were somehow related to your extreme knowledge in PCs, but I'm not being judgemental right now.

Hey I resent that comment about the average deli assistant! Cause I work in the deli, but I am also doing a BA in Business Computing. Anyway most of the teens that work in the supermarkets are at University or Polytech, or still at school etc, so are you trying to say that they are no hopers?

I have been to a DSE store and asked them about some computer related questions, and they didn't know diddly squat, and by the way their computers are rubbish, especially for the price that they sell them!
You can build your own PC for 1/2 the price they sell them for and it will be twice as good.

I have to admit they do sell some alright stuff, but the computers - meh!

You got exactly what I was trying to say - not that deli/dse are no hopers, (some really excellent people work there (and a few tards granted)) , but noone is being paid like a technician and thus to expect them to be technicians is dumb on our part.

I went in and asked about that external nokia modem in Dunedin - it's been returned by three different customers and has been to service five times so far. Diamond in the rough perhaps...

Trademe blessed me with one for $40...and it was new.

Trust me though, get the Turbocomm one for $90+gst from NFC or whatever they are called...higher quality, I cant get the speeds I could with this modem :/ Odd too, its practically the same modem...but the Turbocomm one has a newer varient of the iTex chipset, and assumptions would be that they suck...but not as bad as the Nokia does!

screw dse you are better off going to southern components (www.sicom.co.nz) - different brands of components but in my opinion they are of higher quality than anything dse has to offer.

e.g. bright blue led's - dse $10 EACH.
same product at sicom - $3 each.

if you want to buy overpriced infereor products then by all means go to dick smiths, but if you want good cheap stuff go to sicom.
