o.k just wondering since there is a noticable difference in pricing between [512mb pc2700 generic] and say [512mb samsung pc2700].. if i one is not overclocking, they should be fine with the generic? not really much of an advantage in paying extra for namebrand ?
it's just if i get this 21" screen then i will have to cut back prices on some other components to even the price out again :( so i am just seeing how much cheaper this ddr solution will be as opposed to the orginal RDRAM plan and if i will get close to the same performance.

from what i've seen in the other monitor thread you posted, you want to do webdesign.
if thats all you want to do, pick up an old tbird or p3, and save some $$$. dreamweaver isnt exactly demanding (compared to games at least)

No that's right but since i am actually more involved with the design side rather than just plain coding i will be also using things like photoshop 7, flash mx, fireworks, probably some 3d software studio max or something.. Logic audio 5 and soft synths, freehand 10 and probably some other music production / multimedia apps as well in the near future. :)
i was going for the p4 rdram solution as you might of seen in my "newbie needs advice.." post on the old forum since then i upgraded that a little but now since i'm going for this 21" i have to downgrade it.. :( so i am just toying with the idea of going ddr to see if it can save me some $ so i can get this screen. :) but now i'm getting off topic..
generic o.k?

Why bother with 512MB PC2700s?
Buy you RAM NOW, and you'll be able to pick up 256MB Corsair PC2100's for only $125.
...shove a couple of them in a mobo, and it works out cheaper - PLUS it's Corsair ( so it'll OC to PC2700 if needed - and if not, Lifetime Warranty!! ).
;) ;)
Corsair PC2100 256MB's:

$125 INC GST & P&P - 3 left
http://www.dragonpc.co.nz/
$136 EX GST ( $153 INC GST ) - might have a few left
...why do you need PC2700 anyway if you're not overclocking??

Good point KJ.
Matthew: Why do you even need PC2700 if you don't plan on overclocking?
If you are planning to keep your system @ stock speeds then some Generic PC2100 should be fine. Personally i'd go with the Corsair PC2100 that KJ suggested.

what does "Value Select" mean?

No, not if you will be running the PC2700 @ 133MHz FSB - which is, of course PC2100 spec.
Value Select is basically the lower end RAM from Corsair - still much better than Generic stuff tho.

o.k... so hypothetically i'm lookin at one of these mobo's..
GIGABYTE 8SRX DDR SIS 645 478Pin $205.00 --styles
GIGABYTE 8IRX DDR Intel 845 478Pin(no ddr333) $270.00 ----styles
Asus P4S333-FX P4 Socket 478 $281.25 ---santech
& one of these ram solutions...
3 / CORSAIR 256MB DDR PC-2100 =$375 ---styles
2 / Samsung 512MB DDR PC-2700 =$576 (not inc s+h) ---Australia
(http://www.pcmarket.com.au/pricelist/products.php?catID=RAMDDR)
4 / Generic 256Mb PC2100 DDR =$428 ---dragonpc
2 / Generic 512Mb PC2700 DDR =$588 --starlyte
so... a few options... I'm thinkin maybe the two 512mb samsung sticks from AUS & the GIGABYTE 8SRX .. ??:p

I would suggest the second motherboard, the Intel chipset is better isnt it guys? With regards to P4's I mean.
As for RAM, TasTech has 512Mb Samsung PC2700 DDR333 for $350 including GST, and for $5 less, Styles has it also.
hmm
/me reconsiders his 256mb purchase this week...

LOL - I don't think you'll be buying the 4 generic sticks from Dragon when none of those mobo's have 4 slots, aye? ;) :p
I'd go with the 768MB of Corsair. You'll be hard pressed to NEED more RAM than 768MB - flash, photoshop etc can't even use 256MB right up, let alone 768MB. The only program that even stands a CHANCE of coming remotely close ( with everything else in the background ) is 3DSMax. But trust me - YAGNI ( Ya Ain't Gonna Need It ).
Last time I checked, to fill up my 512MB of RAM, I needed to open about 30 IE windows, 20 Netscape windows, run Unreal Tournament in a window, run Winamp, Word, Excel, etc etc - I think I had about 100 standard office app windows open. And I still didn't make it. Now granted, with a big 3DSMax render and Together and a video editor open, I would have flown past ( that includes the other 100 windows ;) ). But seriously aye...... :D
The Corsair still has lifetime warranty - so if it breaks ( AT ALL ), take it back, get it replaced. AND it's your cheapest option! :)

So - was it YOU that bought Styles out? I hope so, cos the next cheapest for Corsair is Dragon, @ $30 per stick more!
( and it's still a VERY good deal at that ;) )
