View Full Version : Cooling a Slot1?

Yup, more cooling questions (oh, and thanks to all the people that take the time to reply to my questions :D).
This time im wanting to know if there is any shops that sell Slot 1 fans and heatsinks. Is it possible to go DIY a HSF for it?
The pic below is the type of CPU i mean...
Thanks in advance.
[edit] Image is now cropped... Oh, and some spelling mistakes fixed...

It's ALWAYS possible to DIY up a cooling solution.... :D
The main problem with cooling slot processors is that lump of plastic wrapped around the package. You'll need to remove the plastic cover if you want to effectively cool the chip ( and/or cache chips ) of a slot processor...

Is it safe to do that?
The other problem is attaching the HSF (and not having it fall off or snap the chip in half), how would i go aobut that? Some clips that fit over the edges and top of the chip?
*Here comes my elite paintshop skillz*
Key
Heat Sink (copper)
40mm Fans
fastening clips (bent plastic, cant be made of metal for conductive reasons)
This is my idea of cooling.
I take off the plastic (on the chip), place a heatsink (is copper light enuf?) on top of of (with clips fastened chip) the CPU. Add 2 40mm fans onto the HS, and plug it in, and let it roar...
Sound okay to you?

me thinks you should arrange your fans a little more like this :p
as for copper being to heavy... i'd say possibly. but even a decent sized aluminium hs is overkill for a slot1 cpu... but then again, how fast are we talking here? :D

i wouldnt mount the heatsink that way personally.. you'll find when you disassemble it all that the cpu's pcb has 4 mounting holes that heatsink prongs stick through, and on the backside are clipped to provide pressure.
what I would do would be to position the pcb roughly on the heatsink, then mark off the mounting holes onto the heatsink using something like a holepunch for example (you could use a pencil or pen but you'd lose accuracy and could end up twisting things) Then i would drill and tap 4 holes into the heatsink and give it a quick lapping. a bit of Arctic Silver here and there, screw in the 4 mounting screws and voila: Tidy, effective (applies pressure a lot better) and trusty.
If you dont have, or have access to, a tap and die set, then I guess you could just use self tappers.. but disassemble afterwards and clean everything out.. micrometal evilness could ruin everything for you

Couldnt i just mount it using nut n' bolt?
Now, where do i get a heatsink that is long enuf to fit?

you could use nuts and bolts but you'd either have to get a heatsink with a gap in the fins big enough, or youre going to have to go through a difficult process of removing fins to make way for the bolt head...

Are these the hole (in red)?
if they are, does that mean that i only need a heatsink that will fit over the core (i was gonna cover the whole chip)?

well, i did some googling, and i found this pic.... its the P2 without the plastic cover....... :D
It seems to have holes at both end of the card (and theres some by the chip too)...

yep... the four near the core itself are the ones you want to focus on.. the four towards the outer sides of the pcb are just for mounting the plastic shell

Just frill some holes through any Aluminium heat sink and bang it on with screws.
If you are strugling to get the holes centered then u could just use zip ties to attatch it

Would i need to build a DIY shim so i dont hammer the core when attaching the HSF?
hmmmm, any ideas of where i could get a heatsink for this project? Would a normal socket A heatsink fit (modified to screw on, with a delta fan roaring on it)? Oh, and i think i wil go with the threading of the Heatsink, and i can take it to school and thread it.

dumass - read the thread.. you'll notice my last few posts have been saying exactly that
shim - no, it should have a heatspreader on it already protecting the core..
socketa heatsink - yes, but watch its size.. the taller it gets the more problems you'll have with regards to balance and also blocking ram slots... if you can find one, buy a 1U heatsink

im almost positive thermaltake make a hsf for slot1 chips?
you just need to be able to find one on trademe/secondhand/shop which will sell it to ya.

DSE used to sell the gorb slot one coolers. Give them a go.

The only thing is tho, i live in timaru, and timaru's DSE dont have any.... ill try and see if DSE will get some down from the other DSE's that have them...

Nah - it was for slot one. I can't find it though - I guess that sold those on a year ago or more now.
Sorry.

ah yes.. here it is: http://scuttle.netfirms.com/
a fine example of bad webdev.. but they do indeed have slot1 coolers for 15 bucks

I've been looking about for my mate but haven't found much around so we are going to try & hack up some heatsinks and make one.
Using 4 60mm X 10mm fans & copper.

okay, im digging up an old thread here, but i have more questions about slot 1 cooling...
Next on the list is.... WATERCOOLING!
Is there a way to watercool a slot 1 CPU without snapping the card? Would a standard sktA/P4 waterblock fit?
varkk

yeah, I think H2Go has one setup, it's just a matter of finding an appropriate block (or making one)
Also ThermalTake make a slot 1 golden orb, I'm sure one of the retailers would like to send you one....
Ah sweet spring water cooling a slot1
now there an idea !
hybridneo
Yes it can be done with no or very little expence
if still considdering the On Air option - Alpha manufacture a fine range of thermal product suited for that P3 of yours
But you'ld obtain a bigger bang on H2O
I 'd say go for it ;)
like what varkk said
it's just a matter of finding an appropriate block (or making one)
