Feel free to hammer me here I deserve it!!
OK guys when is someone gonna come up with something original?? I mean do you guys have conversations that go like this?
Jim: "Lets mod a case"
John: "OK Jim I'll go get the jigsaw to cut a hole in it"
Jim: "Hey John"
John: "Yeah Jim"
Jim: "While your there grab that black paint & those spare thumb screws"
John: "OK Jim can you go down to the PC shop & buy some round cables and a cold cathode tube, or perhaps some EL Wire?"
Jim: "Sure thing John"
John: "Do you still have those eight 80mm fans?"
Jim: "No John but I have got a couple of 120's"
John: "Great lets put them in! oohh & I have an idea lets put a bunch of switches & dails in to control the fans!"
Jim: "Great idea this mod is gonna be cool and totally unlike any other mod in this forum!"
Then put a badass system inside at let it rock!
I'm Sorry but I think it had to b said. I mean my system looks like crap but at least its different! & It's all my ideas!!
Feel free to bash me now

:)
well it may look like all the rest. but i built. and its so much cooler than my flatmates plain box. :P
i'd rather be a boring member of the 1337 than a boring member of the public.
thing is you have to visit a few sites to get the modding bug. and it sticks. you have to start somewhere. and a window is a good place to start. besides by the time people get to thier second box they will have the skillz to do a proper mod. :/ whatever that may be.
the flatmates hassle me about my case being the same as every other unique case out there too. but at least i was not willing to stay in the beige zone. It's creepy over there.

its the little things
like carrying your case out of the car and into lanplace, and it turns heads from people walking by :)
i agree, you do catch the modding bug :D

I bet you 50c my case would turn more heads than a plain one with a window!

Ive done a few case mods, nothing particularly 'out there' but then I did 2 of mine at the very start of the case mod craze, a standard window one and my camoflage case, they were pretty well recieved.
I guess its all about what you think is cool - to people like us who are used to seeing case mods its all old hat, but to someone whos never seen a window and neon in a computer its the coolest thing since sliced bread.
But i do agree, standard windows and neons are getting a bit boring.
have a look at http://www.koreamod.com/ in the gallery section, some seriously impressive and original stuff in there.

I don't care if my box looks like other peoples ( I doubt it will, esp if I can ever find the giant powerpuff/hello kitty sticker I been searching for :) ), just as long as it looks ok and works well.
I'm cheap so I can't expect it to look brillant, cost me $55 so far, but I really could go some Vantecs...

I hear also they have the best broadband in the world. All their big apartment blocks are wired up as LANs so it's cheap and easily within the average budget.

if you find a picture of it on the web. you should be able to get it lazer cut. then just stick it to the side of the case. not sure how many colors those images can go though.

here here OberoN... it's much the same in the car modding scene - 99% of people think it's cool to copy other peoples' ideas... it leaves a very small group of people who can comprehend the concept of originality - the trend setters in most respects, athough not every new idea is a good idea... :p

what about putting an intercooler intake thingie (i dunno much bout automobobs) on top of your case over the blow hole? now that would look cool, the kinda thing wrx's have on the bonnet :)

ass, i think u mean air vent...all it does it let air flow down in through the intercooler and out behind it

It depends what you are after dosen't it. Not everyone starts modding their case wanting to do something that has never been done before. There is nothing wrong with windows and neons and certainly nothing wrong with painting your case black.
Of course these sorts of mods are common. They are easy to do and give a good result. I still think any sort of modded case is a good step from a BBB (boring beige box).
Kudos to those that push the bounds of originality but thats no reason to take it away from those that produce a good looking case without pushing the envelope.

Nothing WRONG with those same old mods.
They quickly distinguish your case from a standard OEM beige box, are easy to do, require very little materials and electronics knowledge, and are a quick job.
Yeah, sure - all of us would love to do something original. But that usually involves MAKING a case. And that's cool, but that requires knowledge of materials, and it's hard. And it can take MONTHS. As in several - not to mention that if you go the whole hog you're gonna need some electronics knowledge.
So it's entirely possible, it's just most of us work or are students, so we don't have a spare 5hours every day for 3months to do the ultimate mod. Otherwise we would....
...well, I know I would... :D

I would go for original ... but original to me is something like .... wallpapering your computer case. Heck, that's original, but does it look particularly good? ... probably not ... I say stick with whats good and follow the fashion..
black paint and windows ... then let it be :)
After all. how much can you do to a computer case without spending lots of $$$ and time?

I'm not saying that black with neon & window doesn't look good what I am saying is that its wearing thin!
Time is the one that gets most of us! I mean with work, kids, the missus, gaming and whatever sport (if you don't count gaming as a sport) you may be into there really is nothing left.
Agreed wallpapering is different but wouldn't look good. Try a theme!
Try for example doing a StarGate mod! cut a round hole in the side of your case (instead of a boring square) then paint a star gate around it & cathode it! Then you could say that looking into your case is like travelling through space! I know tacky but it's different (but still the same)!!
And for those of you who cant paint make a stone carved mod. Buy paint put in a handfull or two of sand and brush paint it on. It could look like stone.
Look at the guy who glued old circuit baords to his PC. It looked cool (The Bong PC I think it was called) Sure he had some awesome water feature hapening but I bet it didn't cost him much time or money!! Try old CD's cut them into shapes and glue them on to make some kind of pattern!
Perhaps these ideas aren't for you & I never intended them to be! My point is: BE ORIGINAL do something different you don't have to spend big money!!

What normally impresses me most in mods is the flair and professionalism they display.
If the rig looks like it came out of a particularily 1337 factory, rather than some dude's garage after a night on the Tui...
*looks at nobody in particular*
lol, hehehehe :p :D
*has a feeling a blanket beating is coming up*
Marvels at what you can get away with when Ra's in a semi-conscious state :p
And as for flair - well, that should be obvious. It helps if it's functional as well. A mod that looks cool but fries chips every month cos the internal case temp is around 60 ain't too great....
 :D
Solid Snake
06-06-2002, 06:41 PM
Mmm, function with style is hard to get in most cases ... sometimes. Anyways, my mod will be hell as boring, but hopefully will have the professionalism look. I want the computer to fit the theme of my bedroom ... cos I don't want the computer sticking out like a sore thumb.

A well done boring mod is better than a poorly done original one. :D

god damnit.
i know who nna2m is referring too....
thw indow was an accident ok.. it wasnt meant to happen.
i did do an extremely poor job on removing that suckah of a fangrill, the one UNDER the bezel, so you cant see it...
black cases only look good if they are a very shape refined black, dullish black dont look that good, also black with window and red cold cathod, then ur cookin for phatness...:D

I think the best rule of thumb to any modding (cars included) is attention to detail. It doesn't really matter if 10,000 people have got a window or if no one else has one... if it looks good and you've done a good job (and you're happy with it)... it's a good mod.
Originality is good, but sooner or later there will be others doing the same thing (whether or not they came up with it themselves or they saw someone else do it).
At the end of the day, aim for something you like and do a good job... there's nothing else to it really (unless you want to impress others, then start listening to peoples opinions... but you'd be better off listening to peoples advice... the difference between the 2... one is subjective and the other is objective).

I know what you mean, OberoN. Sure they look better than the beige box but is is still just a box with a light and a limp of perspex.
I have been dieing to get someone to mace me a box out of Rimu.
Or get creative with some bog and make a comlpetley new shape box. As long is it isn't just a plain rectangular box woth a different bezel on the front. How about chopping out the drive bays from the top and sticking them further down, to allow a sloping top?

if you take anything that ppl think impossible to make a computer out of it, then its a start. no matter wether its for a practical purpose, or for just fun out of it.
I see a lot of possiblities. i mean anything can be used for a computer housing! desk.. chair is just a start..

I'll clarify a few points about my case here!
My computer is a piece of s...!
It is a joke so far as the internal hardware is concerned!
It is INTENDED to be a joke so far as the mod is concerned.
MrThc => You saw the reactions that time I came over with uniT, your mates though I was a nutter! Thats exactly the reaction I was aiming for! I dont think wall paper would have cut it, it had to be something epic! Velvetine, snakeskin, mirrored balls & the flame job are all designed specifically to be as tragic and as camp as possible.
You have to agree it works!

this funny, oberons fighting a losing battle.
people will always go with the flow and do windows+cold cathode+applique.
then eventually they will be more adventurous and try a painting on the side.
its just somethin thats gonna happen...
so stop yer *****in and shuddup! :D :D :p

lastly.. if u winge about boring casemods, why not do a real creative one by yourself?
ANYONE who have modded their case by THEMSELVES will know what i'm talking about, no matter how well its done, if you have putted a lot of sweat and love (or even blood) into it, then its no more of a boring old case. its the special one and only case :-)

agreed.. not too sure about the love bit tho....
*bad mental image of shag giving lots of love to his case*

anyways, my case mods arent overly original...(well apart from the mesh theme) but they are different enough to be my special one and only case... i should have some new fotos of it somewhere...

Well I have a VERY original case! The reason I have not done any more is that I have a severe lack of cases to mod! I have some brilliant ideas & I'm waiting for Robbo to come though with some cases!! ;)
It has to be said that Whetu's case is |33+ (am I right or am I right?) & it is totally original yet the same! OK take a leaf from his book!
As for fighting a losing battle I don't think so, most agree with me & if you actually took the time to understand what I'm saying you would too! Do your windows do your lights but don't leave it at that!
I am going to quote a wise man who once said *yawn* --> mird-OC

I just thought I'd drag up an old topic to add that I'm not totally against common modding tricks.
I just bought a cold cathode today (no its true)!
What I was wanting was some ideas of a classy window shape.
I cant go any bigger than 65mm x 230mm (Crap compaq case *@#%^&!!!!)
Keep in mind the whole snakeskin & flame job thing also remember that I have velvetine on the side of my case so I would need to fold it over the edge of the shape. (if you know what I mean)

i've got a few ideas - how much spare time you got? ;)
what colour is the cathode?
I haven't seen this yet....... "say no to hardware" windows
The blue parts are the windows and the red is the side of the case ;)

Spare time? Not much but can work on it for months if I get a good idea.
I was thinking of a say no to Compaq window :p - still thinking
Hows this then :D

LMAOBT @ I.R's suggestion
Call me stupid & slap my d!ck but "Default free zone"?
Mird I gots me a cheap 8 inch warehouse job for 20$ & shortened it to fit in the bottom of my case. My case has a power supply right smack in the middle which doubles as a CPU cooler. Really handy! So I'm limited to the very bottom of my case for a window it can't get ant bigger that 65mm tall x 230mm wide.
Really awfull size to be restricted to!!

Plain old rectangle with my logo printed on it.
Thank you, thank you, I'll accept your praise now for joining the sheep and going with popular trends!!
Its hard to see but that is my logo printed on the window. Looks pretty crap at the moment I just slapped it on there quickly to get an idea of what it will look like. I think it fits in with the whole tragic/camp motif dont you?
