download and install avi info:
http://www.divx-digest.tv/nicky/avinfo_1.2a.zip
it should be able to pick up what codec is required... if that fails then start downloading codec packs
http://eselfilme.de/main/downloads/tsunami_filter_pack_3_8_9_mini.exe
http://www.geocities.com/nimocodec/ or http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/
http://www.skynet4ever.tk/
http://www.divx-digest.tv/software/codec/smrpatchsetup.zip
for more look here:

there is also a chance that it was encoded using an older version of divx (3.11 alpha) in which case you *might* need to install 3.11
Yeah get Nimo,
Plays pretty much anything you through at it :P

FOOL!
Nimo is NOT the answer!
avi info is nice, but i prefer a lil program called Gspot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot11.zip)
dont ask me why its called that, but its nice, and tells you if the codec is installed, bitrates, and if the file is truncated.

Nimo is full of lots of codecs.
Problem is, some of these conflict, it has alot of extra crap, and the codecs are quite often not up to date.
The link works for me, but here's the page with the file on it: http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm#editing
