Mine would have to be TA.
So what is yours? (yes thats YOU!)

Tuff choice, have to be between Empire Earth and the original Command and Conquer.
Empire Earth coz.....well it's SO cool with all the different units and stuff.....mmmmm stuff
And well I have fond memories of 3 and 4 hour 4way C&C matches at my mates old flat.....back in the day when we tried to convince 1 of the guys that his new 1Gb HD was WAY too big and that he'd never fill it, this after drooling over his Pentium 90
Guess times have changed :p
warcraft 2,

:D

As far as multiplayer is concerned it'd be Total Annihilation. But when it comes to singleplayer I reckon Warcraft III would take the title.
Starcraft is another strong contender, but I never bought it ( still don't own it ). The other series I've bought is the C&C/Red Alert/Red Alert 2 series. They're good... but perhaps not quite THAT good ( mind you, I was a bit late to the C&C scene ).

I remember the first time I played C&C and became instantly hooked. It was the first real strategy game I ever really got into.
I'd have to say that WC3 was up there for me. Had that "just one more mission" addictiveness.

NO, WAIT
CIV IS STRATEGY.
I change my vote. Civilisation all the way!! Alpha Centauri second, then Civ II, then the real-time strategy games.
OMG, I used to play Civ and only Civ. Musta been like 5 hours a day for a year or two.... not many people like the whole turn-based thing, but those that do have this tendancy to play 'just another turn' ( read: for years on end obsessively :D ).
*memories flood back*
*goes off to play some Alpha Centauri*

my favourite strategy game is...probably earth 2150
now that game is phat, you can (read: have to) design your own units based on what you research, and the game is fully 3d as well, and is real time...
i made this chopper that had a payload of 2 nukes, and it was damn fast, so i built 4 of em and took out nna2m's (the strategy mastah) whole industrial production zone in less than 10 seconds.
yes he actually splits his base up into a crap load of smaller bases......scattered across the map.....in annoying to find places......

Hmm, Im going to have to say Total Annihilation. Me and my brother still have the occasional 3-5 hour battle on the LAN.
Theres so many strategies and weapons, and its got the Krogoth. :D
C&C (original) kicked much booty, then the whole series went downhill. (RA was OK..but not great).
Homeworld ranks pretty highly as well, just for the mind numbing 3d-ness of it all. Massive space naval battles rule. :)
But yeah, TA, definetly.
Binky Stunt Cat
17-09-2002, 11:08 PM
no definate top, but TA, Civ 1 and 2, Alpha Centuri and WarCraft 3 get my vote
SilverPriest

C&C.
The rest of them were ok, Red Alert original was kickarse too
With TA coming a very close second to C&C.

Yep C&C and RA + Counterstrike pack.
C&C Tiberian Sun sucked tho.

hmmm MOO yup then MOO2 then CIV, CIV3 and UFO, then Starcraft
swiftynz
18-09-2002, 12:26 AM
first was the original C&C. only one other game has ever had me quite as hooked as that. even after i had completed the single player campaign i started having 2, 3 and 4 player games. 'twas better than playing doom multiplayer for me :). then i started making unit mods and playing them over the lan. C&C was da bomb. :D
then there was TA. bought it in 1997 after a glowing review in PC Zone and it was the only game i played for a good 18 months after that. and i still have the odd multiplayer game :)
bought core contingency as soon as that came out too. but for ages Noel Leeming in Hastings would only sell it as a bundle with TA which i already had. got them to order it by itself and i was away laughing. it was a brilliant addon. :)
so original C&C and TA come in as a tie for me :)

I haven't gotten into Civ 3 yet though.. might give it a try when the expansion comes out.

CIV3 All the way. . .
I even have it loaded here at work: so I can LOOK like I am doing a prescription, but in fact I am just wiping out the Romans, again.
I Played Civ (on the Amiga) Civ2, and Alpha Centauri, but once you get used to Civ 3 its GREAT

C&C!!! Why cause it had attack bikes :D That game rocked. Also pirates if that counts as strategy.

I'd have to say alpha centauri with the expansion (still have it as well :D ), then MOO, never played MOO2, but cant wait for MOO3 which comes out in about 2 months time. Oh yeah then last but not least Age of Empires series :D

Another vote for the original C&C, that game ROCKED and the (Nod) cut-scenes were good to [Die Seth! Die !] Then the mods / toolboxes started to come out and it was ALL GOOD all over again ...
Next vote would be for Syndicate (and Syndicate Wars) - SEX on a Stick!
(Except when your little guys got stuck via a clipping error; or when 1 runs the COMPLETLY OPPOSITE way to his team-mates for no good reason and gets toasted or run-over by a car and then toasted ... *sigh*; or if you robbed 1 to many banks ... oops; or if you tried to be a smart-arse and pick up Hi-Ex when it had been set and weren't quick enough ... sticky!

haha lol, you don't realise CIV is a very old game do you, it was played in dos=no multitasking and the forums didn't even exist in CIV's hayday
DUNE II!!!!
Thats what hooked me to strategy games, C&C original was also pretty sweet, along with Warcraft II (oldies).
Starcraft and War 3 0wn pants, Empire Earth was good, but far to long and u just have to control as many resources as u can as there where pretty much infinite resources in each miney thing.

in no special order
dune 2 (first game i clocked with all 3 sides)
civ 1 (on a 286)
transport tycoon (playing with trains is fun)
and sim city 2000 for PC, the one on c64 was pretty mean as well.

har har yea theres all these really good games that no one has ever played
earth 2150, and 2150:The Moon Project, they are kinda the same game
then theres World War 3 (based ont he same engine)
after RA, i felt that the C&C series went down hill, jack an jill style, there wasnt any storyline, the cutscenes were getting cheesy, and they didnt ooze the cool of the first 2. They were also only about 2 sides fighting, not story at all
C&C generals looks good, but i htikn the story will b pants (mission 1:capture that, then blow up the base,
mission 2: destroy the "outpost" (read base),
mission 3: send in 1 guy into this building,
misison 4: blow that same base up etc etc)
this is y starcraft and wc3 are so good, they have characters and an actual plot
in no particular order:
Homeworld (the graphics were the best at the time, the first proper 3d rts, and its style was just perfect)
Ground Control (how come no one heard of that?? its like C&C x homeworld)
C&C (har har i bought the commemorative edition, that came w/ dune 2 and special soundtrack cd)
starcraft, and wc3

Hmm, forgot Dark Reign, which would be my 3rd pick.
Sadly it never really got the attention it richly deserved as it came out and was overshadowed at the same time by TA :(
Still a damn good game, i recommend it :)
Damn good story line, and good gfx.
Not to mention one of the best game manuals i have EVER seen.
Embossed black cover, decently thick, and a good read.
Brilliant stuff :D

Crap I totally forgot about Dark Reign! That game rocked!
Had many a good modem battle with that one, especiallly with the morphing snipers/scouts like Sydog said. Oh and the artillery. And that tunneling troop transport, and water poisoners...
*Wonders if Dark Reign works on WinXP and reaches for disc*
DR2 was completely forgettable.

I've got Dark Reign, but didn't like it that much. The idea seemed REALLY cool - but I didn't get it until it was getting older, and didn't know anyone else with it, so I guess it wasn't just the game that killed its appeal for me....
:(
And yeah, Dark Reign 2 just never lived at the same level. Wasn't Dark Reign 2 the first RTS to try going 3D ( and sucking at it, lol :D )?

I remember thrasing DR for awhile as well. It came with my PC Direct bundle ;)
It was the one of the first game that allowed you to queue orders and the first to use waypoints........which was pretty damn advanced at the time. Hell, even some games now still don't allow for waypoint movement.

Yes i have to concur with the majority that TA was and still is the best Multiplayer strategy game of all time.
I also have a game of TA occasionally.
How old is TA now? 5 years?
i hate to agree with KJ but it was him that first introduced me to civ 1 and since then civ2 has to be the all time great strategy game of the world then second probly civ 3 or C&C

Man AOE was da bomb game. But I was disappointed when AOE2 came out as it was still no major improvement apart from new races and units. Buildings and units were more to scale but no major graphics improvement.
I didnt really play AOE2 much.

civ 1 (on a 286)
Damn sanchez did u hav a VGA card?
I played civ1 for days at a time on my dirty old 286, in monochrome, pc speaker on a 12.5 inch COLOUR screen.
It sucked when i ended my turn, cause it lagged like nethin, i had to go and read a book or somethin till my next turn...
LoL so hard to play on monochrome, dont hav a clue wat resources are where etc...
My mates played it on there 486 dx2 , damn it looked beautiful... awww back in the days *sob *

Best game has to be MOO - i hav yet to find a copy of MOO3, can u get it? is it out?
Second best definitely STAR CONTROL 2.. if this counts
BTW i heard sc3 was crap, but hav never played it ....
Sorry, but i would have to say Dune 2 all the way.
Dark Reign would definately be second in my books.

Nothing's civil once I get a hold of the mouse :D :D.
Civ is the ( arguably - though you really have to find a purest before they can even tell you the debate - it's pretty much accepted now ) birth of PC strategy games, in the form of turn-based strategy. You move units, build cities ( which build buildings and units ), manage resources etc to set limitations, which constitutes a 'turn'. You then let the other players have a turn, and repeat ad nauseum ( a la Chess ).
It's got a very cultist following, but because of the slower turn-based gameplay, not everyone likes it ( a lot of people just find it boring - weird.... :p ).
There were a LOT of themes threaded through the original Civilization - things such as 'discovering' scientific advances to gain the ability to build new units, buildings, and advance through ( your digital parallel to ) history. There was resource management within cities ( food, production and trade ), and unit management within your army.
....if you like it, you get hooked very, very fast. Which makes for little spare time given a single game of Civ can easily last 20, 40, 100 hours!
It's been around since PC's went color ( as in tandy, CGA, EGA etc ) - long, long before DOOM, wolfenstein 3D, or any other real-time strategy, FPS, or much else really. It was first played not against 'the computer', or multiplayer on a machine - but rather by sending your turn moves over printer systems, after which your opponent would send out his 'turn' and so forth ( lol - games were very slow paced back then! And no, I don't remember that ;) ).
It can trace some of its programmers' roots to a few text-based games ( pirates, etc ), but its own origin is a lawsuit-contested Avalon Hill ( I think they won the law suits in the end?? :p ) board game.

I think the closest game u own would be MOO - a similar style strategy game set in space..
But -
Moo is definitely not civ, and civ is definitely not moo. especially if your talking about a barn yard animal noises game, and im thinking of a space management game.
ANYHOW i like moo and civ, therefore ( do we hav a 3 dots ASCII?)
I would recommend civ to you, or maybe something a little more 3d like civ2 or civ3.

in order it would have to be dune 2 ( yes that old clunker where you had to send troops one by one no mass select) coz at the time i haddnt seen anything like it.
then i would have to rate warcraft2/c&c with the progressive movies that made you just *have* to finnish the next level to see the next one.
and of course starcraft. 3 different aproaches to gameplay to compliment the 3 races.
warcraft 3 would get a look in but there wasnt anything that "new" about it, all the others had something fresh or groundbreaking about it.
im not knocking war3 maybe i just had my hopes too high for it being the next leap forward in rts's , umm it looks pretty....
