Windows Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/) is the best software i've ever used, its the first thing I run when windows starts up :D ... its basically 2 explorer windows side-by-side which can browse thru your hdd's or network, aswell as browse thru ANY type of compressed file as if it were a standard folder, and also FTP\FXP.. it does too many other things to list :D

Ok, this is big... Its a list I collaborated on with friends for a "2K fresh install" but lots of it is applicable to XP and 98 too.
This list should appeal to people who are online and involved in things from sysadmin type activities through to DiVX and mp3 making.
A good start to any system, tho I prefer etrust InnoculateIT for anti virus.

Vitrite (http://home.insightbb.com/~ryanvm/tinyutilities/vitrite/) a very small easy to use program for utilising the transparency function in Windows 2k/XP systems. It just sits in the tray and you use keyboard shortcuts to adjust transparency and forced staying on top of the active window.

EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de) - Exact Audio Copy. Arguably the best audio ripper out there, though the initial setup takes a while. I had a CD with a massive scratch (a nasty deep bastard), left EAC running overnight and in the morning... wow! Perfect rip for me to burn back to CD. Similar to CDPARANOIA for *nix. Grab the LAME 3.93 DLL too, Google for it.

Reget Deluxe (http://www.reget.com) - a download manager. Is far superior to FlashGet, GetRight, Go!Zilla and all that crap, as it has absolutely no spyware and is incredibly powerful. Grab the trial, then buy it - it's well worth it, as you will see.

WinaXe (http://labf.com) - an X server for windows. Is quite efficient, as is free for use under the trial period (unlimited amount of time, 30minute sessions only though!).

I'll edit with a link to Putty when I find the site. Putty is a remote SSH client, and is easily the best in the business, although one is included with WinaXe+.

Just found this app called belarc advisor, basically waht it does it profile your computer and give you a read out of everything about your pc in a html you can save or print.

You might say "well I know what my pc is ect " but take two things into consideration, its extreamly concise ( right down to watch patches you have installed ) and has great potential as a information gathering if your a computer tech eg send it to a client so you know what your dealing with before you get there.

Have a look at Scanner from
http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/
I've found it very handy for figuring out what to delete to get some disk space back. Anyone know anything similar or better, even?

Net-Peeker (http://www.net-peeker.com)

Real-time breakdown of your TCP/IP traffic by application so you can see how much bandwidth each application is using. Uses should be obvious. Also allows you to limit bandwidth use of any application.

I searched but didn't read the entire thread so if it's already here you can blame the search :p

Im not sure if it has been posted, but its a program that i find to be pretty good.

MyIE2. Its a browser haxed off IE. Pretty good really. Tabbed browsing, Searchbar, Ad filtering, Translation etc.

http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm

Try it if you are still using the standard IE, its a pretty good replacement.

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but StrokeIt (http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/) is quite useful. It's a mouse gesturing program for all of windows, like what you would have in Opera.

One more I dont think is covered:

Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net)

Download the iso, stick it on a floppy, usb memory stick, cd, punch cards etcetera, boot to it instead of to your hard drive, run it, a few hours later say goodbye to all that data you no longer need but wanted to securely delete. Saves all the hassle of going to the length of utilising the chemicals in your shed to produce some homemade, loud, colorless, and potentially shed destroying fireworks to wipe your drive of data :D

www.ultimatebootcd.com does that and more ;) (It includes darik's boot and nuke, but I personally prefer autoclave)

Saves you having to reboot.

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

best app ever - quote from guy i work with ;)

used control my laptop from the work desktop. much better than VNC as there is no lag, just have to turn your head a bit. it is also cross platform which is nice to be able to test in IE.

I have a linux dual head box which is the main machine. Then a windows box to the right, then my laptop if I bother to bring it in. So I can move the mouse across 4 screens of LCD goodness.

SlickRun (http://www.fiddlertool.com/SlickRun/)

For those sad people that don't like the mouse. Use your keyboard to do almost anything. Just bind a keyword to a program, type it in and voila!

Has keyword, path, filename completion and more. I couldn't live without it :D

.:LINUX:.

AmaroK for music - http://amarok.kde.org/ - works best when using KDE (although it can be used on any desktop enviroment, it will still need to load kde libraries, wasting precious memory :p)

Xchat for all your irc whoring - http://www.xchat.org/ - Most feature rich irc client for linux I've come across.

NVclock for controlling fan speed on Nvidia gpu's - http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper/ - Add those repositries then - apt-get install nvclock
