Ok, all I wanna know is this:

Is there any REAL WORLD difference between DDR ram and SDRAM ?

I'm not talking benchmark figures showing that I'll be able to open exel 0.032 seconds faster, I wanna know would I actually notice the difference ?

Like anything it's completely dependent on what you're doing. If you're doing something that's high bandwidth between the cpu/graphics card/memory, then yes.

If you're doing productivity type stuff then no. Not noticeably.

So in conclusion if you can't understand all that gobblegook. Gaming/Video work, yes. If you're using Excel/Word/Outlook etc. No.

Sweet as....thanks for the reply.

Would ya say it's worth the price difference though.

I play a few games, MOHAA, RTCW etc and also some productive stuff to :p

I guess my question can be simplified by ask "Is DDR ram worth the extra money?"

I know benchmarks and marketing tell me it is, but I want to know what people who've been there tried that think ?

Worth the money? Well - it is now that it's close to SDR prices ;).

Depends though. If you've got a Celery 500 and a TNT2, DDR ain't gonna do jack - DDR is more a high-speed CPU thing. For example, P4's die with SDR, as do Athlon XPs. They basically need the faster RAM. TBirds get quite a boost, but older processors may need gain so much out of the extra memory speed.

I know going from SDR to DDR made very little difference at all for me. My CPU was fast ( 1.4ish TBird ) - but my bottleneck was my GeForce2 MX, so the extra memory bandwidth didn't do much. If I had had a GeForce3 though, it probably would have made an appreciable difference. :)

The mobos and RAM are similar prices, and definately worth it in my book. I have never looked back.

I have just made the migration myself but give you any real world improvements as I uprgaded cpu as well...

But from what I have read. DDR has increased it's performance advantage over SDR. So I'd say go for it. Especially when you hunt around and see that you can score Corsair 2100 for under $200 a 256 stick.

You might also be a bit hard pushed to find a DDR board for a Celery 500.:p

I found a huge performance increase when moving up to DDR.. Even in the more tedious tasks.. IE opened in .01 seconds instead of .02, my frame rates increased from insane to ludicrous...

If you have a P4 or Athlon XP you definately want to use DDR, there is no point upgrading a CPU that is already bottlenecked by the ram.
