Firstly, whats your current drive?
Second, DONT BUY THE 5400 RPM DRIVES. Get the 7200rpm equivilent, trust me, you do notice the difference and you should spend the extra $20 or whatever it is.
A fresh install of 2k is recommended, 9x is too old, XP is bloated sh1tware.

yea definately get a 7200rpm. not only for speed, but for the quality of the components!
trust us, it IS worth the extra cost (which imho is quite minimal).
to transfer your OS and files to the new hdd use a program like norton ghost. powerquest also have a proggy called drive image and i believe even partition magic has a basic copying tool.

currently using a Crappy old Quantum 15.2gb HDD
iv checked out reviews on the Western Digital 5400rpm HDD and it beat some of the 7200 drives in the benches :D, even the reviewers were quite suprise.

It's not worth the bother transfering all your old windows install onto your new hdd, just plug the 40gb in as primary and 15gb as secondary, install windows on 40gb and then transfer your needed files from the 15gb to your 40gb
