Well im thinking of getting a ti 4400, but i was thinking how much bvetter is it than a 4200 and if it is worth it or go for a ti4600?
I want a 128 meg version and i was also wondering what brand to go for, i dont think im gunna oc it tho

well
apparantly the ti4200 is nvidia's wonder card as you are sposed to be able to oc them to 4600 standards!
ive never actually used a 4200 crad, nor a 46 or 4400, though reviews of the 128 meg 4200 are quite impressive!
i would go for the 4200 if i were you, its got the vertex and pixel shading, plus comes in the 128 flavah you be cravin :)
remember to buy a triplex gf4 if you get the 4600 though- you gets teh phat briefcase thingee :D
How much cash you got? That's really the deciding factor.

i would hav to go with p01s0n on this one, go for the 128mg ti4200. from what i hav heard the 4400 seems pointless; spend a bit more and get a 4600 or just go with a perfectlly good 4200:)
thats wat most people are doing when up grading or getting a system, going with a 4200 me like wise:D

Yeah you can buy the Leadtek Ti4600 for $690 - Leadtek Ti4400 $615 (mmm dual fans).
So depends what you want power or price?
Altho there is another option - The Asus 8420 Deluxe
Which is a 128mb 4200 with 3.3ns ram & a core clock of 260, but is built on a 8 layer PCB (unlike all other 4200s) & has BGA ram (Allows higher Oc'ing).
At around $490 it is cheaper & more powerful than most Ti4400s

Brand wise whats the best? Whats the diference say with a golden sample and a tripplex one? Is it just the quality of ram?
I wont spend more than $800 unless its exeptional or has somthing special about it:) but the less the better it just depeds it its worth that much.
I have a duron 1.1 rig atm.
The tripplex ti4600 is the cheepest of the lot from this site http://www.starlyte.co.nz/main3.php?section=18

imho, stuff the ti4600, get a ti4200 (that ASUS 128mb deluxe one looked good) and put the money towards a new cpu.

A Ti4600 is overkill with your current CPU dude. So it might pay to budget a bit and get the Ti4200 and a better cpu.
Everyone will give you a different answer on the best brands, but the Triplex cards are very nice (played with both the Ti4600 and the Ti4200), the leadtek's seem to get a few people excited and the gainwards are usually pretty solid....................except of late ;)
Well my replacement card which is now a Golden sample thankyouverymuch hasn't suffered a PSOD™ or even a run of the mill BSOD....... but if I was to get another GF4 I probably wouldn't go Gainward
Hopefully with the next Nvidia rollout Gainward will have learnt something from this indiscretion and not make the same mistake twice :)

Imk not too sure i mite go for the tripplex ti4600, im gunna upgrade my comp bit by bit wc is next (b4 xmas) then the vid card (hopefu8lly around xmas but before april 20th 03) depends on how much it is then my cpu :)

Yea dont get a Gainward, I've got one and occasionally get the dreaded PINK screen of death. If I could choose again I'd get an Albatron Ti4200 P turbo (www.albatron.com.tw/Product_info_v.php). 3.3ns BGA, 8 layer pcb etc etc. lousy golden sample;).

I had a play the otherday with one of those triplex ti4200's I might be rong but im sure you can fit the Tt VGA coolers on those cards... plus the silver board is suposed to be cooler than the others, meaning it should oc quite well :) I'd get one of those + they cheap :D

Damn I can't stop preaching about making sure you have a balanced system this week...
Basically even is Ti4200 is overkill for a 1ghz Duron... Your performance (3dmarks, fps in quakeIII etc) is going to be better then before yes, but majorly limited by your cpu.
So I say don't get a Ti4600 ... get a Ti4200 and spend $180 and get an AlthonXP 1700 or 1800 aswell..

09-09-2002, 10:17 AM
hehe, pretty much everyone has said get the 4200 + a new cpu rather than the 4600 dude. i totally agree with ragnor, the duron 1100 will kinda cripple the 4600 and imho the 4600 isn't worth the dosh when u can get 4200's which have the same features and only a little worse performance for half the price!
plus you will get better performance in games from a 4200 + athlon xp 1800+ than u will from a duron 1100 + 4600, not to mention the overall performance increase from getting a new cpu.

Feels like we've all been saying Ti4200 + AthlonXP 1800 all month to all the n00b's putting together systems.. hehe

Oh shutup Ragnor  lol
Im going to get a new cpu anyway, all i was wondering if the diff between the ti 4200 and the 4600 is worth the dosh and how much better it actually is!
Thanx swiftynz for answering me:) but i still want to know how much better it actually is because i dont plan to buy another gfx card for a while or actually a long time hehe.

Why do you want a card now? There arn't any games out yet with the new Unreal 2 and Doom 3 engines yet. So wait untill they come out before buying a card :) Oh and the 64MB cards have faster memory and run the new engines better... but only if your comp has alot of memory ie. 512mb :) (Could be rong) ;)

well if you can put up for a few more months wait and get a NV30 or Radeon 9700, those will have a very long lifetime (Direct X 9) Will be pricey tho

Is the diff between the ti 4200 and the 4600 is worth the dosh and how much better is it?

Okay listen. I got the cards so I got real results.
I have an AthlonXP +2100 and a GF4Ti4600, and I am STILL being limited by my CPU. I am sure my AthlonXP+2100 is MUCH more powerful then your Durrie there.
If my GPU gets limited by my CPU, how would a Ti 4600 get limited on yours? Much more. In effect, your spending money on performance you WILL NOT get. Therefore a Ti 4200 is much better in ratio to your system balance and system performance/ price.
It's like the whole arguement. If I want the fastest machine on Earth, you'd choose Intel and NOT AMD, because all you want is the fastest machine on the Earth and you wouldn't give a damn on the price. But when it comes to us students, price vs performance is a huge issue for us, and AMD offer performance/price really nicely...
The Ti4600 IS MUCH better than a Ti4200 w/o overclocking, yes, but in your case, you won't see the 'MUCH better' part, due to your CPU.

No, get a 4200, overclocked will get nearly the same performance, mine is only 1% off 4600 average in 3dmark, and remember that includes people overclocking there cards as well.
Your much better off getting a $400 card now, then in 6months or so get another $400 card. Thats $800 and the card you will have will be better than a 4600 hopefully

If you plan on playing future games then get the 128mb version, sure you will get a performance boost with the Quake 3 engine, but when Doom 3 and UT2k3 come out you'll notice the 128mb version is much better

method, if you're really cheap like me you dont buy new graphics cards... in fact i never have! :D
first was a voodoo 3 3k pci i got 2nd hand for $50 in early 2000 (from a guy at school). that was a dam good score, one of my best purchases since it's still seeing use as a secondary display today (nice 2d :D).
second was a hercules gf2 mx. paid $170 (i think - sern might know otherwise, inlcuded 64mb of sdram otherwise wouldn't have bought it :p) in march i think.
and my latest graphics card purchase was a Leadtek GF2 GTS w/tv out from binky 2 months ago. $170. so all up i've spent $350 on graphics cards (-$40 cos thats what i sold the 64mb of sdram for :D). i sold the Herc MX for $100 when i got the gts, making my deficit $240. not too bad...
next i'll be looking for a GF3 at around the $200 mark. GTS should fetch around $140 since it has tvout.
the disadvantage of doing what i'm doing is that you're always 2 generations behind!! :D

I'm like you swifty, 'cept jumped one step ahead as I now have a GF3 Ti 200. Just waiting for the Usual price plumet then I'll grab someones "out of date" Ti 4200 (either Leadtek or Triplex). :D

d0g - I just went and had a look at your link. Did you notice they have down that the 128MB versions also have 3.3ns BGA.
So much for everyone putting lesser ram on their 128MB cards.
Not to mention that blue pcb reminds me of Hercules. :p

Something is sus about that card..... they say it's a 4200 yet it uses the same ram and same layout and 8 layer PCB as a 4600...... hmmmm....... so let me get this straight..... it's a below standard 4600 as 4600's have 2.8ns ram and the core is at 300Mhz ...... if it's the same price as a standard 4200 get it but if it's any more expensive I'd stay away

Did some searching and found this (www.natcompnz.co.nz). They've got it for $478.50 inc gst.
Their sites a bit messed up, they say its a "Ti" but under description they put "mx440 core" so you should check that price with them b4 you decide, imo.
Damn, anyone wanna buy a Gainward Ti4200 GS??
That's not teh turbo one ;)

hehe sound very similar to me :D
1) i got a Voodoo 2 12mb PCI from a dude at school ($40 last year)
2) got a Geforce 2 GTS 32mb ddr from a workmate ($120 Jan this year)
3) got a Geforce 2 Ultra 64mb ddr from a GP forums user ($200 Jun this year)
then i sold the first two for $56 and $132 respectively, makeing a profit of $28 on the first two :D
total deficit is $172 :D

Seriously, El Roffo has a point. Skip the Celeron 400, and try and get a celeron 300A:cool: those things OC like crahhhhzy!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------
I would personally buy a ti4200 and an XP1800 for the same amount of bling bling that a 4600 costs. An XP1800 with a 4200 will be 10% faster again then a duron 1.1 and a 4600.
I wouldn't buy a 4600 these days - its old technology. Why buy the flagship old technology when a little bit more money or a month or two could get the flagship next generation card? It'd be like a poor overclocker buying a Geforce4 mx460 - it might be the fatsest MX ever made but its still an mx FFS!
Ragnor
13-09-2002, 11:27 PM
Skip the 1800 XP and go for the 1700 XP only 66mhz slower and about $50 cheaper..
You're going to overclock it anyway ;) so a 1700 is better value..
$178 from starlyte and the moment..
Getting myself one next week
