Hi, I really need help...

I just got myself all the pieces to build my first computer. AMD athlon xp 1800+ on chaintech apogee 7vjl mb, ati 7500 128 megs, etc...

I just finished to plug all the stuff on my computer. CPU, heatsink, motherboard, DVD, CDRW, HD, video card and just when I try to plug it, problem.

The system power up for about 1/2 second, the lights in front lights up, the CPU fan start spinning, and... everything shut down, but the lights in front stay lighted...

any idea.??? I have a 350W power supply box, and all the cables seems well plugged, at the right place. Is there a jumper I need to set to make the system works.

thanks a lot

also, when I checked my CPU to see if it was broken, I saw that the pink paste under the heatsink has touched the CPU. Is it OK???

Pink paste? You mean the thermal pad - it's OK, that's supposed to contact the CPU.

Firstly try reseting the BIOS.

What type of fan are you running on your CPU? Because if it is a low RPM fan and the motherboard has the 'Shutdown If CPU fan Fail' option enabled in BIOS, then your computer will power up but then shutdown after a couple of seconds.

Could you give more details about your system please. ie: brands and types/models.

Try reseating your ram/gfx card as those are common problems.

Have you checked the reset bios jumper is disabled?

If that fails try checking the jumper that controls the FSB, it should be at 133mhz. I haven't used the chaintech mobo's before but my friend had a bit of teething trouble with his 7vjl...

I'm sure these other guys will be able to help you out more if that doesn't work...

Its perfectly normal. The goop on the heatsink just helps transfer the heat from the cpu to the hsf...

Hi,

thanks for your fast answers...

I have a chaintech apogee 7vjl and my fan is the retailed one that came with athlon 1800 + CPU.

I tried something. To run the mb with no CPU, but the fan collected. And it worked... the fan was turning and the system not shutting down...

Can I have a doa CPU??? It's not broken nor burned...

any comments. thanks a lot in advance
