I installed win 2K in December 01, since then I've upgraded a lot of hardware in and out of my system.
Recently I've found that new games just won’t run on my rig.
Celeron 1.1G
ASUS CUV4X-E
256 RAM
Gforce 4 mx 64DDR
The other day while Wondering around the OS I had a look at
add/remove hardware and when I pressed show hidden devices
the s*** really hit the fan..
Every piece of hardware that has ever been in this system was still listed, one video card was listed 34 times, almost every piece of hardware has more than one listing.
I even upgraded the mobo with out reinstalling the OS.
I now know I'll have to completely reinstall 2k and the next time I remove hardware I'll use the add/remove hardware utility.
I hope this helps some one, to not make the same mistake as me.

i too have all the hardware ever used,
so you are meant to use add and remove? I'll keep that in mind.
but why would that screw up your system?

The Registry gets full of old stuff, that points to hardware that's no longer installed, and it also slows your sys down.

Sound like your system has multiple personality disorder. :D

this is a quirk of windows since 95 days... in this case i usually just boot into safe mode (or what have you), remove ALL devices, reboot, and get windows to detect everything again.

i periodicaly do a complete format of C drive and reinstall everything....mainly coz my resitry get soooo filled up with junk entries of me installing and removing programs...and now i have a SP2 updated Win2k install.....might have to wait a bit, grab SP3 and make a new one...

for those of you with messy registries, look for a program called regcleaner... does an awesome job of cleaning out the crap

i usually want to clear out all those left behind .dll files that arent being used, but since i have no idea which ARE beng used, a format/install is the easiest way of clearing it up
