View Full Version : distilled water. Where do you get it???
Where do you get distilled water?????? Chemist?
I was thinking of putting radiator fluid (to stop corrosion), a bit of dishwasher powder (for the surface tension) and colouring for looks.
Sound like a good mix?

If you're using so many additives, why bother with distilled water ( ignore this if tap-water in your area has to be boiled to be drunk )?

yeah i suppose.
Over at OCAU they thouht it was pretty important, but they are australians:D

Because distilled water will have less impurities in it.
Such as lime and whatnot...
I know i sure as hell wouldn't use tap water from my place for watercooling...

Pharmacy stocks distilled or deionised water. We tend to normally stick with de-ionised, which basically will suit your purpose perfectly: the only real difference would be a few pyrogens (proteins) in de-ionised, but since we're talking a non-sterile product, after a few hours in the bottle there'll be a few bugs in both products, i.e they'll be identical. 2 litres will set you back in the region of $7 (or less) but phone first to make sure they stock it.

I think garages often have a supply of distilled water as well (for use in car batteries)
i phoned butler, supercheap etc and they all said that they just use boiled water that has cooled (ie from a jug).
Simple aye.:)

FBC water (freshly boiled and cooled) kills the bugs, but doesn't purify it to any extent at all. Basically the bugs would all die ANYWAY once you stick all that other stuff in, so no real advantage. If you're after cheap: collect some rainwater. Pretty clean and closer to distilled than tapwater is. And pretty plentiful today *LOL*
Grrr!!

School chemistry labs.
Generally have a large stock ... and a distiller.

theres no point in de-ionised and destilled water...as soon as u put it in ur system it aint de-ionised anymore! Dirty wblock, inside of tubes and pump...

Try going to a dentist or something, ask you'r friends if their work has a water purify thingy.
Dunno if that is distilled but meh. Or you could take a trip to CHCH

I am in chch! You know somewhere??
I think i'll just boil it and be done.

Then use tap-water. Christchurch's tap water is pretty d@mn good unless your piping is useless.
If you're really worried and can get to Uni sometime this week with an appropriate container, then I can give you something even better than distilled water - MILLI-Q WATER.
MUCH more pure ( some of our experiments don't work with ordinary distilled water, because it's too impure, lol ), and I should be able to get you a few litres no problem.
( didn't bother with my setup - but mine's inline, which is a b***h to do without a big tub of water to submerse everything )

Use rain water, just wait until it's been raining for an hour or two, cause the rain filters heaps of impurities out of the air, then collect the pure stuff.
Question :
What's the point of the exercise
you've all got me confused as to the objective here

h2go: methinks perhaps concerned n00bie watercooler in the making wants to try avoid chances of mini-chernobyl ;)

i wouldnt mind germs spanning home in my watercooling setup.. just think how dirty our hands are.. :-) but seriously, after a months of usage.. my hoses gone a bit yellowish :-( but is distilled water gonn get rid of all that?

Supermarkets stock distilled water, thats where I got mine from in Wellington
Full credit to ya Max
But stop listening to those Australians
Theres nothing worst than havein an Ozzie tell ya what you need
If you're really serious about the quality of your H2O in your rig
Then why in earth would you consider including any additives to it
after the extra effort you're put into obtaing a clean system.
If the WoW factor is what you're after then by all means full ya boots
I don't mean to put u off -
just stop listening to our Tasman freinds

Yeah i think i'l just forget the distilled water but i will use the radiator stuff to stop algea which grows very quickly if you have transparent tubing (i used transparent tubing in a hydroponics setup once which got overgrown by the stuff)
and thanks KJ for the offer, thats real nice, but i dont think i'll get that extreme and i want to fill it up tomo:)
i rang up this place in akl called NZ Distilled Water :p
they said it was $7.50 per 15 litres...
lol, i'm gonna be using that for a while :D
max, am I thinking what everyone else is ">>(i used transparent tubing in a hydroponics setup once which got overgrown by the stuff)"
:D
:D
why don't you guys distill your own water? it would be much cheaper,

I've got a dehumidifier, and it makes litres of the stuff every day.

i gave up and decided not to use it. chemists sell it for $8/3L, rip off.
