What's your opinion, do you think there's any difference in overclocking from a windows environment, for example using softFSB or CPU cool etc.

Or would you say hardware's better and you should only use the BIOS, or even (heaven forbid) mobo jumpers.

Who's tried both methods, and what results did ya get?

on my old mobo I could get the FSB up to 147 via software, and only 143 with bios,

but, on my asus, no point in software cause BIOS is more powerfull and software is worse than bios

I will never use software overclocking when testing limits. It's a stupid idea if you expect things to remain stable.

Windows won't boot when you OC too far - for a reason. Namedly, your processor/whatever failed a few tests, and if Windows DID continue, it'd just rip havoc right through your whole system.

By overclocking once you've already got the OS in memory, you SHOULD be able to go higher - but it's an unstable higher. A higher that wouldn't have passed those tests, isn't reliable, and isn't exactly going to aid your up-times.

But then, I'm an up-time phr33k.... :D

( Twas 5 days before I decided to play with a PCI card earlier this afternoon. Rig down the hall has just passed a week - on ME - might need a restart sometime to things fresh... )

LOL, one week uptime, you crazy persons!! ;)

The most I've ever done is 14 hours .. only because I'm running W9X and my rig is pure sh!te.

Overclocking...software = celeron level ;)

Go hardware bro...its made to do that for a reason!

As for the uptime thing, I used to shut down my pc every night, and one day it occured to me, after all my friends *****ed about how long it takes Win2k to load/shut down, that it wasnt really made for that...so I started leaving it on...

Since that day, I have reinstalled windows a few times, changed to XP instead, but still get the same results...I've managed to not have to reset for 2 weeks at a time, but generally a new driver comes out every 3 days for me! So obviously I reset that often under normal circumstances...still, only ever turn it OFF for displacement to LANs etc.

IMHO, only use software overclocking when you have a POS Intel mobo that doesn't have any OC'ing options.

my rig gets shutdown and tucked in for the nite at about 2 - 3 in the am cuz my parents say it wastes alota power leaving it running overnite

as for the overclocking i just use the hardware side of things i just do it in the bios atm i have got another 120mhz and an xtra 20mhz fsb totaling cpu @ 1320mhz and FSB @ 220 mhz and my cpu still runs at about 28 deg's with a std heat sink and stuff :) :) :) :)

Demon, run UD, and join the RNZ team :)
Info here (http://www.radiativenz.com/projects.shtml)
And the link to the team is in my sig.
That way you have an excuse to run 24/7 :D
And it will make sure your system is stable ;)

I'll usually test settings in BIOS and check stability for a few days, drop down the FSB a bit or up the voltage if it's unstable, then set jumpers as close as possible and enjoy the speed. :D

I turn mine off at night, I haven't got any reason to leave it on, its bloody loud, to everyone else in the house it sounds like rain. And I have never used nightlights.
