.... yeah that's right ... I think I overloaded my wall socket my PC plugs into .....and FIRE.... upon closer inspection the live wire had well melted..... wierd I do not think I overloaded it

NZ Standard house wire 250V 10A 2500W (tell me if I am wrong)

All I had running in it were:

400W Leadman PSU 250VX?(=-5A?)=1250W
19" AOC 250VX1.5A=375W
1X 16 port switch 250VX0.7A=175W
=+-1800W

Why Fire ???
(darn house stinks now :()

just cuz there is fire duznt mean it was being overloaded, I don't know much aboot electrical ****, and my dad (who was a electrician) is in bed so I can't ask him. anyway it culd have been a power surge, altho i don't know if it would cause that.

far out that must have been scary, I keep thinking my GF2MX200 will blow up due to no cooling and @ agp 1.7v.

you better check whether the socket is still live by poking a knife in it....

takes no responsibility if someone was stupid enough to do this...

Lol - you'd be the optimist :D.

Sorry to be the realist, but house wiring has pretty piss-poor standard here in NZ. You can pretty much wire what you like, and especially on older houses any electrical wiring is a complete mess.

10A fuses yes - but they're often shared between several output jacks. Go check nothing else around the house is burnt out...

Bugger man - so life's not exactly all roses for ya :(. Hope your rig's OK.

Just been over my rig .... it's all sweet
I think that because the power socket is above DSL/Phone Jack that it has somehow killed my Nokia m1122 :(

It won't even blink :( or hum :( or anything :(

oh what a Sad Sad Day :(

it was probably cause by a poor connection or a kink,
if the electricity was arcing acros even a very small gap it will generate a lot of heat. kinks cause higher resistance. i once melted a 4way jack with my electric heater but that was drawing a bit more current than you were...

Glad to hear your rig servived. :)
Shame about the m1122

If you can afford to replace it imediately, ther is one on trade me for $400 brand new (price is an est. it was when I looked at $370 and within 15% of reserve). You must be absolutely hating being stuck on dialup.

you can get more than 10A flowing thru if you do a short circuit.

If you overload a wall socket, it will blow a fuse (that is, if you don't use paper clips instead of fuse wire)

I once had the smell of burning coming out of my wall, so I switched off the power to the whole house and waited, at the end it was just the 4 way power board that was stuffed.

Are you sure you didn't get mice or similar living in the wall?

I agree with the above post. Any body else got ESTA and ESTB (electrical service technician A & B) quals? I have, so I should know about this stuff (hopefully, been a while). The wire behing your wall socket should be rated at 10a continuous. It could also be you Nokia m1122 that cause a short and burnt it out, but you fuse of cct breaker should have blown.

You are covered by insurance for this if you have cover, so milk it for anything that has died, even if you motherboard and CPU if they are now playing up.

generally, you shouldn't have heaters pluged in with everything else,
for example, my fan heater uses 1200W in low and 2400W in high mode.

But i never use it cause I don't wan't my computer to get warm and the computer and monitor heat up my room anyway.

N is totally right, the fan heater is enough by itself, the rest is ok but probably approaching the limit. Remove the fan heater to be safe. Is that 2 wall sockets in the same mount? ie side by side?

If it's two totally seperate wall sockets on different walls then it should be ok.

its two in the same mount :(

yeh my xp1700+ hit 47 degrees last night coz of the heater... musta been at least 30 degrees in my room,

how easy/hard is it to install another wall socket??
any idea on cost?? (it a lockwood house)

not hard, but if you are baiscally gonna run it off the same source, you are not achieving much.
For example, in my house, 2 rooms run on the same cable, so if someone switches on the heater in one room, my speakers make a pop noise.

If everything is OK as it is, then it might pay to leave it as is,

also, don't you think your heating is a bit too much, it's cooler in summer than it is in your room now, :D

like my room is 14°C, if it drops below that, I heat up to about 18°C.

its a bit much,, and yeh it is cooler in summer...
but i have cold feet... :(

i might get a sparky to have a look at the house wireing and see if i can get my room removed from watever its connected two.

i think im connected to the kitchen?? or the hall way...

Run an extension lead from another wall socket, especially if it's from a different cct breaker or fuse. You can tell by poping the cct breaker, and checking to see which power points still have power.

extension cords are evil!!!
