View Full Version : No Number of Posts?

I can't see the number of post, mine or others.
Normally this wouldn't bother me but I was just about to take Sydog up on his avatar offer when I realized. The option of loading an avatar similarly seems to be missing.
Is it just me? Or is it the forum?
yep, that's what I thougt, where did the post count go?

At the request of the majority of the moderators, the post count was removed. Quality not quantity I think is the rule.
And regarding avatars. You can change you avatar after being registered for 10 days, and having more than 10 posts.. that's more than fair :)
And if you want to see the memberlist and posts.. click here (http://forums.overclockers.co.nz/memberlist.php?s=&what=topposters&perpage=50)

I can understand the reasoning. :D
So as I have over ten posts. Does it now mean I still have to wait a week before being able to post an avatar?
I think that you shouldn't have these restriction with most of the people siging up already have posted 100's of posts on the old forums.
Who cares, just wait a while and everything will be sweet and back up runing normal.

If a post count didn't in fact matter, then moderators wouldn't get rid of it. They must feel that there is too much spamming, and this will reduce by the fact post counts are less visable. I agree with their decision, and it's good to see you can sill find the count in the background if desired.
However I think a forum is only as good as it members, and a poll may have been a better way to decide. I saw Spider had very few posts for a moderator before, but it never seemed to bother him. I wasn't round for half as long as many, but in my short time I could tell who knew what they were talking about, and who didn't. (KJ obviously knew nothing jk:p )
I feel if the plebs like me, would rather have a feature like that turned on, then let them have it. No members, no moderators, not that any members will leave over it, but sometimes you just have to be bigger than the little things that don't matter.
I challenge the mods to a poll.
Loose the battle, win the war sort of thing, if thats what it takes. You may also be surprised!!!
why not have like, no post count if over 100
that way we can see the newbies, i suggested this before.

Don't you guys reckon the member status is a good enough indicator? ie: Junior member, Member, Senior member and whatever comes after that. The Registration date is good aswell.
But yeah, Deviant has a very valid point there about having a poll. A poll was done in the old forums and from memory about 60% of people wanted a postcount, 20% of people didn't want a postcount and the other 20% didn't care.
But I don't really care I'm happy either way.

Yeah that's a good idea _N_ either that or increase the length of "junior member" or something. Umm what actually are the cut offs for the member status.

The post count is staying off.
It does encourage spamming, and it's just a better all round solution.
If you so urgently have the need to view it, go into the appropriate members profile.
We are sorting out the member status things now.
Just chill, it will all be fixed up soon ;)

You do know that anyone can start a poll right? ;)
I personally was more worried about the thought of not being able to post an avatar.

Poll would look stupid coming from anyone who is not a mod, as you would look like a cry baby, longing for your post count. I don't care either way. But no I didn't know I could do that, could we do it before?
Don't quote me on this, but I'm a senior member with over 100 posts.
Maybe this:
0-49 Junior Member
50-99 Member
100+ Senior Member

hehe I find it quite funny actually, I try not to think of as "haha I have more posts than you" but when I see huge numbers of posts on other ppls names I think "damn I suck, time to write up something" I prefer the post count gone
PS - I suck anyway hehe :D
the way I see it is like this,
someone posts in the buy/sell section: wanted cheap computer components
and you look and see that they have 1 or 2 posts you know they are just a scab trying to get some cheap stuff mostly out of good will of local OCers.

hmm yeah that's true, why not have something like this:
1-24 new member (mabye some sort of sign after their name also)
25-49 junior member
50-99 member
100+ senior member
200+ the meanest poster in the land

As silver has already said, we are working on user levels which will cover this.

*giggles*
So what is 4000+, or at least 1000+? And no, I wasn't the only one up in the thousands last time, not by a long shot...
As SP said, it won't be coming back. Less spam = good, and that's one way to cull it out. Even if not for most members, but for newer members that see a single digit in front of their names, and instantly feel the need to make 30 posts in the 'test' forum

i dont think the Member status would be a good thing, as it'll still encourage more spamming.
IMO i think the member status should be on how long the member has been registered in the forums, not how many post that the member post's.

Jeez that was well thought out asan.
No really, it was a brilliant piece of work.
Would you kindly think about what you are saying.
What on earth is your reasoning?

Have you guys looked into doing something like they do over on atomic. They use a peer based system, which means the other members decide by voting what sort of level you are. It certainly would encourage "quality over quantity".
Just a thought.

That's kind of interesting, do you get nominated by other members, or is there a grading thing that goes on once in a while like in Karate.
>>or is there a grading thing that goes on once in a while like in Karate.
my club does it at the end of each school term, :D
But with the voting system, there would be people who would be picked on, and then we would have gang's form up etc,
And then, it would be like, gang wars and it would all get out of control, :p :D

But gangs don't have stick wielding moderators to keep them in line. Anyway, we could leave it up to the mods, which is what they are probably thinking anyway. I can see they want some kind of system, but want to cut out the spamming.
Is mods did the grading, I can see some serious ass kissing then, from certain un-named members. Also the mods would have to get some wide view monitors to cater for their swollen heads.

The rank , member etc, should be based of a combination of time they have been around and also the postcount. It means more to me if they have been active since the begining... Know what I mean? Any f00 can join, whore it up and post thouisands of useless bs posts and be rated a senior member or whatever. Doesnt seem right to me.

No they can't. You just try writing thousands ( or even hundreds ) of useless posts, and see what the mods say....
*d@mnit, need evil smiley!*
Time sounds like a good measure, but if you've ever looked at the member lists ( not now, we're new ), you'll see that generally 20-30% of people registered on forums DON"T POST AT ALL. Some of these people may have registered in the first week - so obviously time by itself isn't a good indicator.
Yes, there probably ARE better ways of doing it by combining several metrics, for example time joined, number of posts and length of posts ( only that would be unfair, my <RANT>s would probably whack the average length up too much.... :p ). But at the end of the day, why bother? Who really gives a shag? Can we be bothered working something hugely technical out when post-count does a reasonably good job anyway?
At the end of the day, I think you'll be lucky to find anyone with enough time to waste to be bothered trying anything other than post-count based measures....

Err, k
First of all, that wouldnt happen, if someone joined up and started spamming like a chinchilla on metamphetamines we would be on them in a flash.
We can do all sorts of wonderful things to spammers ;)
Anyone remember "Wusy" from the old old old forum?
He got dealt with in a hurry ;)
