Hey bros, and broesses
Curious, does the 3Com 100mbit netcard use something other than Realtek, and if so, is it less suck on my machine?
Chaars.

THG got a review burried somewhere bout the 3com. Just cost too much don't they??? Netgear stuff is prolly just as good - much cheaper...

Cost doesnt matter
I have one of each here, the 3Com was donated, one of many, and the Realtek has been in my machine for months...just wanted to know if there is an advantage in having one or the other... :)

3com use mostly lucent chipsets I do believe.. or their own perhaps.
The 3com should be better then the realtek.
But I've had a few of 3c905 's before and they were dog's. No end of driver trouble, kept causing network problems.
Maybe another case of the hardware being good but the driver development team was off too busy eating pie in the lunchroom
Give em a go, win2k or XP doesn't mind too much if you switch network cards around alot.

But no driver issues ;)
I turned off flow control...just to see if that did anything...I am guessing its better on?

The 905s have a bit of a reputation for unreliability.
I was using one because it was free ;) but switched to an old Intel 8255x.
As Ragnor says, better than the Realtek though as it has an internal buffer.

The 3C905C card is a good card. It comes in two versions... one is a "TX" I think, which is a smaller (cheaper) version, and then there is the full sized card. I have a few hundred PC's running the full sized cards and would've had only 2 or 3 failures in the last couple of years.

i wonder how cheaper it is, in fact...

I'm not sure what their secondhand value would be... $20-$30 would probably be a good price if you are shopping for one... otherwise $40-$50 if you are selling one :)
IMHO, if you want a brand new 10/100 card for home use you may as well buy a cheap one because if it dies then it ain't the end of the world. On my customers' networks I pretty much insist on the higher quality cards (eg 3com) because it's more "mission critical".

OMG
Crazy
I was given this one, by a workmate who has the amazing ability to have people give him stuff they dont need anymore, due to upgrades, and like this card, they are fantastic products.
Did I mention he has been given about 10 of these cards? All the same, and none look used in any way!
My Genius Realtek card was fine for some home gaming, but I have to say I have noticed the difference with it not being in here...

It sounds like you struck gold... while I couldn't give you an accurate figure on their secondhand value, I can tell you that they're about $100 each new.
