Hi guys,
I have recently installed Peanut Linux (http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut/) on my comp and am having troubles with my modem.
Same ole linux troubles with a Lucent WinModem :( ....I cant get it to go.
I have been to the Peanut forums and have searched through there, found some "drivers" but i still cant get it to go.
During install it sees my modem, detects it...and thats about it.
Using KPPP to dial to the net, i set up an account, do all the blah blah.....goto query my modem to make sure its there, but it comes up with "sorry modem is busy" it happens on every port setting i use :(
If ya need more info, let me know
Any help is appreciated

Never tried to get one running myself, but I am on a few linux mailgroups, and it comes up pretty often: Try Linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org/) : They have a ton of source code that may help, plus FAQs

yeah i've been to linmodems, but i cant understand most of it.
I found some linkage for winmodems i.e drivers for hsf and hcf downloaded them installed the rpms and nothing :(

As for whats it like.....
I only got it coz of its size, cant be ****ed downloading 600+ MB on 56k, and coz it looked easy to install and configure. There are linkages to pics of what it looks like on the website in my first post. Seems easy enough to configure......
Nice and fast, the only bad thing is i have to boot from the cd to get it to run, cant be bothered configuring LILO (comes up with some error), apart fom that once your in stable as a mofo, havent had any other probs so far.
Running it on my main rig at the mo:
Duron 1200@1475
EPoX 8KHA+
256MB Apacer DDR 2100
GF3 Ti 200
Gay ass WinModem
Asonic 6Channel soundcard

Picks up all that, as well as my mouse and keyboard and writer.....

Still playing with it at the moment...i is a Linux n00b ;)

When i had linux i got my Lucent Winmodem working quite happily under mandrake 8.1. You don't want HCF or HSF drivers, they're for evil conexant modems. Find the link on the linmodems site for the olitec drivers for your modem. I'll have a look for you and post again later.

Ok, go here (http://www.danielrees.me.uk/ltmodem.html) it should have all the info you need. I got mine workning from those instructions.

As far as I know there is no support for
*any* winmodem under any of the flavours of linux. You may like to look at sourceforge.net but I've been here before and thats why I've an external modem. If you have a modem on a ISA port linux seems to get the right idea but there is no linux sw to drive a winmodem .. as far as I know.

Well you are wrong, many manufactuers have released linux drivers for their softmodems(note they were mistakenly called winmodems as initialy there was only windows software for them), otherwise others have written software for many. I know that with a lucent chipset modem you have to make sure that you get the right set of drivers to match your kernel version.
I had a problem when upgrading a friends RH install, went from 7.1 -> 7.3 and the modem stopped working cause the old driver wasn't compiled right for the new kernel. downloaded a new set of drivers and was away.

I found the right RPMs off the linmodems site mentioned before
here is the link to the page with lucent drivers http://www.heby.de/ltmodem

also so far as soft vs real modems go, both have advantages and disadvantages but let's not get into that argument just yet

My experience was a couple of years back now. As you suggest I could get a binary driver but to install it I had to match the kernel and that meant downgrading the existing installed kernel with all the subsequent problems that implies. Did you manage to find the source for the softmodem drivers so you could compile it for the kernel in use?

I agree that the name "winmodem" is not really appropriate for it implies that such a modem could only work in a winxx environment. As for the benefits of soft vs hard processing that is quite another subject :D In the days of slow processors I suppose there was much benefit from allowing the modem h/w to do the error correction and data compression. Now, with efficient processors it is likely an efficient driver will serve as well.

In terms of impact on the o/s then I believe an external modem has benefit for then the o/s needs only really to know about what port the modem is on and the communication s/w can handle the modem command strings. So, for linux RH 7.3 I was really pleased to just do an install and everything other than my CDROM burner was recognised. Installing the CDROM burner so that linux could use it properly was nothing near as frustrating as my experience with a softmodem. Linux software compatability is greatly improved though ... and getting better all the time. It is fair to say that the lucent modem also gave me trouble under win2k but that's some time ago as I mentioned.
