3/4 way down I found this :

The motherboard is also less important. All the fancy BIOSes created for overclocking are pointless, though they might enable you to underclock. The advantage to underclocking is to generate less heat, and hence, require less cooling.

what do you guy's think ??

in the context they are right... why bother overclocking a hometheater pc? hell i'd go so far as to use just a viac3 for the task...

well in that case the only OCing that might be worth it is lifting the FSB on a duron from 100 to 133 while keeping the actual CPU speed the same.

as for VIA C3, they are cheap, a shop here is selling a 1GHz C3 with mobo with the everything onboard, 128 RAM, case & PSU all for 395$+GST,

which shop N? upgrading my aunty's dead computer so that might be worth a look...

the shop is Macroscience

they are inside the Warehouse up here on Westgate, at the end of the NorthWestern Mway.

He had a little paper with that "upgrade box" stuck on the wall. Some of his prices are pretty good. Email them and see what's the story etc.

Yeah but I liked whetu's answer. I don't care if someone else isn't into overclocking. We can spend $200 on watercooling to get an extra 20-50 MHz over air cooling. Doesn't make much sense but we enjoy doing it. Just like case moding. Other people may blow their money on horses, or $20k car sterios, or bla bla bla.... i don't say to them it's a waste of money.

Tru dat!

When it come to a home-theatre box, it must be SILENT. NO fan noise. NO pump noise. NADA. Any noise will simply quadruple the effective distortion of your HiFi speakers :D :D

But as for you Binky - *Sighs* have we taught you NOTHING?

Overclocking can actually give significant performance improvements.

Eg: MY RIG :p

All at default:
43xx ish 3DMarks.

All tweaked and OC'd:
55xx 3DMarks

All tweaked and OC'd like a mofo:
Have yet to test, I'm hoping for close to 6k ;)

...which is a 40% ish improvement in raw speed over stock. I'll take it.... :D

well, yeah ok, OCing rigs such as yours would help.... but mine already get 5100 3Dmarks.....and once i upgrade it'll get even more.....
plus my monitor is limited to 72Hz @ 1152x786 so anything more than 72fps is wasted for me...

Any video card can get 72 FPS, but can it sustain a good refresh rates like that during a big hell fight on the newer games. This is where O'clocking can come in really handy.

Don't worry new games will continue to come out... Unreal 2003 this year, Doom III around the corner next year...

Unless you're rich enough to constantly upgrade you'll need to oc to maintain the top quality settings soon enough...

If you're rich get a new hobby

dude
this is an overclocking forum. Therefore coming in here and saying overclocking is useless is kinda dumb. it can screw over somethings but a quick cmos reset and your away again.

Not really
As it has been said above.
Overclocking IS pointless, or @ least not a good idea in some situations.
ie: a home theatre setup.
A pc in the kids room etc.
It needs to be quiet. (or a server, well, it can be noisy, but ocing a server aint a good idea, uptime is somewhat critical ;))
Watercooling aside, underclocking, or running @ stock is sometimes the best idea....
Ocing = heat.
heat= more noise, as u need more cooling to get rid of the heat, bla bla bla bla bla bla bla.
*shrugs*
noise doesnt bother me too much, but hey :D

2 much thinking

all depends on whats your cup o' tea and whats not

but generally if u buy a fast car its great for the first few months and then..it starts to feel slow..so what do u do...

MORE POWER:D

I think for some people, they don't have the option to buy the BEST hardware and so on. SO overclocking is an enthusiasts way to get the most of their money.

I like overclocking ... but I personally only do it for a while to see what I can hit. Then I reset back to default speeds

well then there is the fact that even the lowest-end machine available today is pure overkill for 95% of computer users out there...

OC'ing is where it's at if you care about every single smidgen of power ... it's mostly just a dick wagging contest again, but when it comes to competition, OC'ing gives you the edge. be it SETI, THINK, 3DMark, Sandra or whatever.

of course its a competition!
at the moment none of my friends have a cpu over 1ghz, except for me (not stock of course)
see that gives me the ability to say my celeron has that extra 200mhz of seti crunching power....
of course a 200 mhz oc aint all that good, but hey.....

just shutup ok volodkovich, i know my computer is in teh shop caus i had no ****ing clue what went wrong with my mobo, but im sure it wasnt a ocing problem....
