liteons are generally regarded to be excellent drives, though personally i havent had a great time with them. As for how much they normally cost... go do some research ;) www.pricespy.co.nz

you seem to think that liteons are good so why did you bother asking how good they were? why was it rebranded? Its cheaper for 4kus to bulk buy from liteon, slap their badge on and turn a profit than it is to go to the expense of setting up production. Currently sony drives are using liteon componentry.

Does that mean that a BTC is in effect a re-re-branded Liteon?

Hi, I have been having a similar discussion to this over at PressF1 4kus thread (http://pressf1.co.nz/thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=24125&message=78056)
My question is - should I go with the 4kus 40x12x48x from inhouse for $177 incl. p&p to the South Island, or an Aopen 40x12x48 for $153 (no postage as it is from a local distributor)?

Don't worry, I went with the 4kus.
It rated higher on cdspeed2000 (http://www.cdspeed2000.com) .
Thanks anyway

Good job coolmhz.
I got my 40125s to a 48125w. :D
coolmhz - Are you using a windows flasher? If not I can point you in the direction of a good hacked version. It enables you to oc your drive and restore it all without a reboot, let alone having to go into dos etc. I use it as I don't have a FDD. Also which version are you using, I'm using vs06, although I have heard a lot of good things about vs02 I went with vs06 because of the speed increase.
Graham - Have you brought that 4kus yet?? As Starlyte have the LiteOn 40125s for the same price.
For all other LiteOn n00bs, I recommend a visit over to CD Freaks (http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=44) as they have a dedicated LiteOn Forum.

My 4kus arrived yesterday, and I am happy with it so far.
Gh0s7 L3mUr - what is the diff between the 40125S and 40125W?
Cheers for the CD Freaks link.

Oops, misread your post.
How long have you had you drive overclocked for??
Are there any long-term negative effects eg laser burn-out etc.
Who else has had experience overclocking a 40125s/w to 48125w (or even better, a 4kus 5W40 to a lite-on 48125W).
Any pitfalls??
Looks like a good idea othrwise.

Had my drive OCed for about 6 weeks (ie since about 24 hours after I got it :D). No probs yet. The only negatives I heard about is the potential increase in wear and tear. But what you have to remember is that although the OCed drive might be rated at 48x it isn't always going at that speed, so the chances for damage are very low. My advice go to here (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=Overclocking&index=5) and download ZSxx to VS06 and VSxx to ZS0K.
You can use these two win installers to OC to 48125w (VS06) and restore back again to 40125s (ZS0K). The other benefit is you can do it without rebooting your system.
My advice download them, burn off a movie at standard, then OC your drive, burn off the same movie again and see what results you can get.

OK - I used mtkflash to back-up my 4kus firmware, then flashed it to a 40125W as a test run - worked fine. At the moment I don't have any media that can be burnt at 48x, so until I go and buy some more, I will not worry about it. That CD Freak thread suggests that v02 has a better success rate than v06, so I have the v02 bin file.
ANy other comments appreciated, esp if your drive has killed itself due to the extra speed.

Got brave and flashed it to a 48125W. Burnt a $1 warehouse disc rated at 16x at 48x in 2:20 for 560MB including lead-in and lead-out. Worked fine - scan disk came up with no errors, and 99.86%good surface scan (There was one unreadable cluster at the very end - no effect to file readablilty). Thanks OCNZ - I now have a 48x12x48 for $177!!
