i'd like something similar, but for mp3->Ogg purely coz Ogg is better :D

convert mp3 >> ogg ...why?

Ogg is not better in that situation.. think about it.

mp3 is a lossy format you lose information (sound qualilty) going from wav/cd audio >> mp3. You can't get that info back its gone.

Converting an mp3 >> ogg. The ogg doesn't magically gain in quality, it's only as good as the source mp3.

It's tedious but you have to re rip everything as ogg, and download other peoples ripped oggs to replace your mp3's to actually get better quality.

down grading the bit rate as i go......i'm getting slightly annoyed at the masses of 192Kbit mp3s i've been getting, and 96 Kbit Oggs sound CD quality to me (ok, so my stereo and sound card kinda suck)

Won't OggDrop do that. I'm sure it did last time I used it.

You should be able to use winamp or something to uncompress the MP3's ( it used, donno about now, have a write to disk/wav feature) .. then recompress it in whatever format you feel the need to compress it in, at what ever bit rate you desire, but i wouldnt go below 128kb/sec

hey not everyone who has a crap sound setup is hearing impaired :p

*looks at portable phillips with wire going out of tape deck and into onboard speaker out port* :D

i still rip OGGs at 128 or 160 depending on the album ;). i have an sonophone amp and speakers at home and the sound quality out of that big old system is surprisingly good with a decent cd player/soundcard or even turntable . my flat's gonna have cranking sounds next year. :D
